In re William Coughlan       deceased

In the Name of God Amen I William Coughlan of the Town of St. John's in the Island of Newfoundland Farmer being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament. that is to say principally and first of all. I give and recommend my soul into the hand of Almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors not doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as touching such wordly state wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

• First I give and bequeath to Catherine Coughlan alias Brazil my dearly beloved wife the one third of all my property goods chattels and effects the remaining two thirds I bequeath to be equally divided between my son Patrick Coughlan my daughters Mary Coughlan and Elizabeth Coughlan share and share alike I bequeath to my daughter Catherine Burk alias Coughlan the sum of Five pounds sterling and to my daughter Alice Murphy alias Coughlan the like sum of Five pounds sterling

• I likewise constitute make and ordain my said wife Catherine Coughlan the sole executrix of this my last will and testament and in case any of my said three children Patk Coughlan Mary Coughlan and Elizabeth Coughlan should act unrully unditifully or uncorigibly to my said wife I do herewith empower my said wife to deprive at will him her or them at discretion and give it to the well deserving or most dutifull of the said three children Patrick Mary & Elizabeth Coughlan and also my said children are to be under the management and entire controul and direction of my said wife during her widowhood only and in case any of my said three children should mary contrary to the will of my said wife in such a case I empower my said wife to deprive him or her of their proportion of this bequest and to give it to the others,

In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my Hand this eighteenth day of February in the year of our Lord 1812.
