Will of Charles Coates
from Newfoundland will books volume 8 pages 35 & 36 probate year 1906.

In the Estate of
     Charles Coates       deceased.

In the name of God. Amen. I Charles Coates of Upper Gully Conception Bay in the District of Harbor Main, Newfoundland, Farmer, being very sick and weak in Body, but of perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this my lat will and Testament.
First I give and bequeath to my son Nathaniel all that I possess (except what I intend to give my three sons now living in the United States of America) viz. dwelling house, goods and chattels, farming implements and all loose gear about my place besides my stable and cellar and all my cultivated and uncultivated land my first piece of land by the water side is bound on the north by my brother Jobs land south by my brother Peters land East by the River and west by my brother Job's land my second piece of land is bound on the north by my brother Job and David's land south by the main road, East by the river and west by Warfords land. The road to the water side running through the above piece of land, all my building together with my son Nathaniel's buildings are erected on the west part of the above piece of land. My third piece of land is bound on the north by the main road leading to Holyrood, south by my brother Job's land, East by the land I sold the L.O. Association and my brother Peters land - my fishing room is bound on the north by the water of Conception Bay, south by railtrack, east by Charlie Andrews and west by my brother David. All the above mentioned property I give and bequeath to my son Nathaniel. I give and bequeath also to my son Nathaniel my share in the caplin sein and my shares in the caplin skiff. I give and bequeath to my three sons now living in the United states of America one English shilling each And I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every other former Testament, wills and Bequests, willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this, and no other, to be my last will and Testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and six Charles his x mark Coates
signed sealed published pronounced and declared by the said Charles Coates as his last will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses. Job Coates.    Francis L. Furneaux Commissioner of Supreme Court of N.f.l.d.

I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the last will and testament of Charles Coates

Note: The wills in those will books are NOT actual wills. They are hand-written copies of a, "last will and testament," written by the court clerk, after the death of the testator, when the executor presented them to the court for probate. The court clerk didn't list the signatures at the bottom, he (or she) just put them in the book in whatever order they were in, on the original document, no spacing most of the time, no punctuation. The originals were kept by the executor.

We who have typed these wills, have made every effort to include all the errors that were on the microfilm, in order to avoid destroying the integrity of the originals, where ever they may be.
