RECORD OF BILL OF SALE FROM ELIZABETH BUTT, RELICT OF HENRY BUTT OF CARBONEAR TO RICHARD SKEHAN - 1790

Know all men to whom these presents shall come, that I, Elizabeth Butt of Carbonear in Conception Bay, relict of Henry Butt deceas'd, for and in consideration of seventeen pounds three shillings sterling of good and lawful money to me in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, I have granted and sold by these presents. I, the said Elizabeth Butt relict of Henry Butt deceased, do grant, bargain and sell unto Richard Skehan all that my Plantation or Estate in Newfoundland, that is to say the entire Room that Henry Butt deceased possessed with all the Buildings thereon erected with both front and back ? (might be liberties?), gardens and all & every the premises and appurtenances thereunto belonging, excepting a Room & half stage room when he ? it that is staked out ? Thomas Rannalls by lease, the said Plantation lying and situate in Carbonear aforesaid. To have and to hold the said bargained premises with this & every their appurtenances unto the said Richd Skehan, his Executors, Administrators & Assigns forever, together with all ways, pays, passages, waters, water courses, easements, profits etc, & that free and clear of & from all manner of encumbrances or demands whatsoever & the said Elizabeth Butt for herself do Covenant, promise and agree with the said Richd Skehan, his Heirs, Executors, Administrators or assigns to have to hold & enjoy & possess peaceably & quietly the said Plantation with all the premises & appurtenances thereunto belonging to aforesaid as this & their property. And to his & their own proper use & uses for ever as aforesaid, without any let, hindrance or molestation of the said Elizabeth Butt, her heirs, Executors, Administrators or assigns, or of any one claiming or to claim whatever. And further that the said Elizabeth Butt is at the time of the ensealing & delivery thereof the true and lawfull owner of the said Plantation with all the premises & appurtenances (bottom line of photocopy cut off at this point)...

Have hereunto set my hand & seal this first day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred ninety.

The foregoing is a true copy of the Bill of Sale, exhibited by Richd Skehan and at request Registered in this Book of Records this 2nd day of January 1799.
