Will of James Burden Senior Last Will and Testament of Last will and Testament of James Burden the eldest of Salvage Bonavista Bay Newfoundland. I James Burden of Salvage aforesaid being by Gods mercy of sound mind and fairly good health at this present time this sixteenth day of February one thousand eight hundred ninety three, of my own free will and pleasure make and direct the following depositions of all my worldly goods, money and all other property situated at Salvage and elsewhere. Such disposals to be effected after my death, but to be of no effect during my lifetime First. I leave and bequeath to Elizabeth my lawful wife twelve thousand dollars which is now deposited at Commercial Bank in her own name together with my dwelling house at Salvage with all its contents furniture beds bedding etc etc also three plots of gardens, outhouses and meadow land attached to said house as now occupied by myself situated at Salvage aforesaid. Also the farm, farm house, with all outhouses farm implements, live stock and all pertaining thereto, together with all loose money that may be at either house, as situated at Salvage Bay or Salvage proper, all the above to belong to and disposed of by my wife as she may be disposed after my decease. Second I bequeat & leave to all my grand sons (now about thirteen more or less) four hundred dollars to be paid to each of them at the age of twenty one to each of grand daughters three hundred dollars at the age of twenty, should any of the above grand sons or daughters be dead before they reach to above ages their proportion shall drop - Each one may receive or add the interest to the principal before they come of age to receive their annuity. Third. To Mary Marten I leave twelve hundred dollars to be deposited at interest in her own name interest to be drawn when necessary but her husband to have no control on her money or her childrens money. Fourth For repairs of Salvage Church I leave fifty dollars and for Salvage Bay Church I leave forty dollars. And should my brother Wm Burden be in need he shall receive twenty dollars a year though very negligent, so much so as to weaken sympathy. Fifth after deducting the above named amounts the balance of what money I possess including certain outstanding amounts against each of my sons as specified in a small account book keep by me or as may be shown in another sheet accompanying this paper and must be considered as part of their proportion. Only that Henry Burdens amount there standing against him shall be six hundred dollars less and John Burden five hundred dollars less to make up for disadvantages building premises et etc the balance as aforesaid shall be equally divided between Henry Burden, James Burden, John Burden, Kenneth Burden Clara Burden, Elizabeth Burden. Sixth. Stores, shop & office wharf stage flake and all weighing beams scales and weights measures & all other appliances belonging thereto, shall one half belong to Henry Burden the other half shall belong to Kenneth Burden to be disposed of by them or their heirs and successors but never to be under another name so long as there a Burden to occupy those premises. The premises at the upper end of Salvage now occupied by James and John Burden shall be their own as they now hold it. Seventh my Estate at present consist of as follows that is to say
and debted to my four sons, and to included with the above amounts between four & five thousand dollars at present, or as may be more definitely explained by another sheet to accompany this paper late on In witness whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix my seal (sgd) James Burden (LS) (Sgd) William Moss. W. B. Grieve Esqr. John McNeal Esqr. Executors. Salvage Bay March 15th 1893. This is to accompany my last will and Testament to show more definitely the amounts against each of my sons and to be included in their Share of balance of my estate
Kenneth is charged one hundred dollars $80 a year for the past five years, altogether four hundred dollars $400.00 for hire of premises and use of business implements making the amount against him as above $1957 at the close of or the end of the year 1892 (Sgd) James Burden Senr. This is to accompany my last will and Testament to show more definitely the amounts against each of my sons and to be included in each ones share of balance of my Estate (viz)
Kenneth is charged eighty dollars a year for the
past five years, altogether four hundred dollars for use (hire) of
premises and business implements making the amount against him as above
stated $1957 at the close of the year 1893. (Sgd) James Burden.
Those above amounts to be added to total estates and deducted from each sons proportion (sgd) James Burden I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the last will and Testament of James Burden deceased Registrar (Listed in the margin next to this will the following)
