Last will and Testament
of James Bryden
of St. John's Merchant Deceased
.

This is the last will and testament of me James Bryden of St. John's Newfoundland I hereby direct that my just debts & funeral expenses be paid as soon as conveniently may be after my decease and I hereby give devise and bequeath all and every my household furniture, my own gold watch and chain piano books plate Pictures jewellery and other items sum or sums of money and other properties in our hands or outports, deeds for same viz bills of sale are either in the safe or in A. D. Hayward's keeping, also moneys from my life insurance policy, receipts for which are in the Iron safe from the National ??ferance Natural Relief Society Washington D.C. U. States. F. M. Bradley Secretary P. O. Box 682 and sum insured for three thousand five hundred dollars as well as whatever amount may come to me and mine at the death of my friend and second cousin James Jackson Esq. of St. Michaels Hamlet Aigburth Road Liverpool England amongst his letters in my possession will be found referring to his having willed to my dear wife and family an amount of money received by him out of the sale of her property in White orte, Partick near Glasgow being very wealthy and having no family & being a favourite of his I expect more, and all of which property and money I give in trust to my son James Wetherspoon Jackson Bryden and Charles Edward Archibald my son in law as trustees for my estate relying upon their good judgement honesty & discretion to do the very best that can be done to dispose of anything necessary to be sold, collect in moneys and dispose of them so as to bring in the largest interest to be got with good security for the same. My wearing apparel to be divided amongst my sons if worth so doing, and Isabella to get whatever of her dear mothers is in the house, and should my son James & nephews remain in the house and have the present or other goods they are to give a home to Isabella as the now has with me, household furniture, piano, plate pictures books and other articles to remain with them on condition that Isabella remains a member of the family as hitherto, the advantage and interest to them would be an equivalent for her board and lodging and I direct that out of any interest upon monies invested, the sum of one hundred dollars be allowed her to pay schooling dues & pocket money annually, but paid quarterly and so continue until she gets married or has a house of her own, I also direct that for outfit she is to be given the sum of four hundred dollars, after which a division of the effects, whereof the value of household furniture etc will be a part will be divisible and be shared equally between sons and daughters, but should moneys be well invested and all desire to leave it so and receive the interest let it be so
