Last will and testament
of Robert Brown
of Amherst Cove Bonavista Bay Planter Deceased

In the name of God Amen. I Robert Brown of Upper Amherst Cove Bonavista Bay in the Northern District of the Island of Newfoundland Planter being of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding but mindful of the uncertainty of human life do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following; that is to say I give devise and bequeath to my son Edmund William Brown the flake he occupies, also enough land to build a stage to the northward of the stage I occupy. Also I give devise and bequeath to my son Alfred Brown one gun. Also I give devise and bequeath to my son Walter Brown the eastward half of my fishing stage, also my southward store also half my lower flake, also the small flake to the southward of the salmon house, also the green where we spread the nets, also three salmon nets. Also I give devise and bequeath to my grandson Tobias Brown son of Alfred Brown one bed seven yard tick. Also I give devise and bequeath to my daughter Rebecca Little one leaf table, also I give devise and bequeath to my daughter Rebecca forty pounds currency and to my daughter Julia Ann thirty pounds currency and to my daughter Mary Jane thirty pounds currency. Also I give devise and bequeath to my sons Edmund William, Walter, Henry and Alfred the sum of one hundred and thirty seven pounds ten shillings currency each. Also I give devise and bequeath to my wife Sarah the sum of fifty pounds currency and my wish is that my said wife Sarah shall reside in my house as long as she lives on condition that she does not bring her relatives to live there, and does not marry again. But if my said wife Sarah shall marry again or bring in members of her family to reside in my house, then my wish is that she my wife aforesaid shall cease to live in my house. Also I give devise and bequeath to my grandson Robert Burges the sum of ten pounds currency. Also I give devise and bequeath to my grandson Robert Little the sum of five pounds currency. Also I give devise and bequeath to my son Robert the sum of two hundred and eighty pounds currency, also the southward half of my fishing stage, also my store by the waterside, also my upper flake, also half my lower flake, also my house and stable and store alongside, also my cabbage garden, also my calf's pen, also my fruit garden, also my horse and harness and all belonging to it, also all my cows, also one gun, also my field, also my land in Middle Cove, also my net store on the bank, also I give devise and bequeath all the remainder of my real and personal property not hereinbefore mentioned of what nature soever and wheresoever situate the same may be to my said son Robert Brown on condition that he the said Robert Brown pay all the expenses of my funeral. And my wish is the expense of proving this my last will and testament shall be defrayed by my sons and daughters in proportion to the money legacies bequeathed to them. I hereby appoint Samuel Brown son of James Brown of King's Cove in the Northern District of the Island of Newfoundland to be the sole executor of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at King's Cove aforesaid on this eighth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty nine. Robert his x mark Brown (L.S.) Signed sealed published and declared as and for the last will and testament of the said testator in our presence (the same having been previously read over; explained to and approved of by him) who in the presence of the said testator and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as attesting witnesses William Kirby Samuel Brown S. P. G. Mission Service, King's Cove.
I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the last will and testament of Robert Brown deceased.

Codicil

By this codicil I confirm all the terms of my last will and testament with these exceptions. I wish my son Edward William Brown to have only a life interest in the flake and land bequeathed to him in my said will and after his death I bequeath the same to his son William Brown. I wish the sum of one hundred and thirty seven pounds ten shillings currency bequeathed in my said will to my son Edmund William Brown to be divided as follows, namely forty dollars to my wife Sarah Brown and forty dollars for the church at Middle Cove, to be applied as the Incumbent shall decide, and the residue of the said sum to my son Robert Brown. Also I appoint Joseph Brown of Thomas and Thomas Hancock both of Kings Cove to be executors of my said will and of this codicil thereto. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at King's Cove, Bonavista Bay on this thirtieth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety one Robert his x mark Brown (L.S.) We the undersigned were present and did see the testator Robert Brown sign and seal the above as a codicil to his last will and testament, the same having previously been read over to and explained to him in our presence, who in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as attesting witnesses on this 30th Sept. 1891 William Kirby SP. I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the codicil (marked B) to the last will and Testament of Robert Brown deceased.
