Will of John Brown
from Newfoundland will books volume 6 page 325 probate year 1897

Last Will and Testament of
John Brown of St. John's
Master Mariner deceased.

      This is the last will and Testament of me John Brown of St. John's in the Island of Newfoundland Master Mariner, but formerly of Isle Valen Placentia Bay in the District of Placentia and St. Marys after payment of all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses. I give devise and bequeath unto Ellen Brown widow of my late son John Thomas Brown all my house furniture beds and bedding kitchen utensils and all and singular such articles as are in the house at the time of my decease except one feather bed which is to be given to my Grandson William Condon son of my daughter Ellen by her first husband Thomas Condon. The money in my name in the Savings Bank which may be remaining at the time of my decease I give and bequeath in equal parts between my daughter Theresa and my sons widow Ellen Brown save and except the sum of one dollar which I bequeath to my daughter Ellen wife of Joseph Breen being the only part of my property which I wish her to inherit. The medal I received from the French Government I request to have forwarded to my daughter Theresa and my watch and chain I bequeath to my brother Timothy Brown should he survive me. And I hereby appoint my nephew George William LeMessurier to be executor of this my will witness my hand and seal at St. John's in the Island of Newfoundland this fifth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety seven. (Sgd) John his x mark Brown (LS) Signed and acknowledged by the said John Brown the Testator as and for his last will and Testament in the presence of us being present at the same time, when it was read over to him the said John Brown, and at his request, in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.
