Will of James Brown

.

In the name of God amen.
     I James Brown of Kings Cove, Bonavista Bay in the northern district of the island of Newfoundland Planter being of sound mind memory and understanding but weak in body and mindful of the uncertainty of human life do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following.
     That is to say I bequeath the dwelling house which I now occupy, also the cow house also the pigs house to my wife Sarah Brown and my son Samuel Brown as long as they live, and after their death I wish my grandson Stephen Brown son of James to have the said dwelling house, cow house and pigs house.
     Also I bequeath my cellar to my sons Samuel Brown and Thomas Brown in equal shares.
     Also I bequeath my cabbage garden to my wife Sarah Brown and my sons Samuel Brown and Thomas Brown and my grandson Stephen Brown aforesaid as follows. Thomas to have the portion he now occupies and my wife and son Samuel to have the remainder and after my wife death my son Thomas aforesaid to have half and after my son Samuel death my grandson Stephen Brown aforesaid to have the other half.
     Also I bequeath my garden on the Plate Cove road to my wife and my sons Samuel and Thomas aforesaid as follows. Thomas to have half the garden and my wife and son Samuel to have the other half as long as they live and after their deaths my son Thomas to have the whole of this said garden.
     Also I bequeath my inside meadow on the Plate Cove road to my wife and my sons Samuel and Thomas as follows. Thomas to have one half and my wife and Samuel to have the other half and after their deaths my grandson James Brown of Thomas to have the whole of the said garden.
     Also I bequeath my garden near Curtis' to my son James Brown.
     Also I bequeath my cow house and the yard it stands in to my wife and son Samuel Brown for their life and then to my grandson Stephen Brown son of James.
     Also I bequeath my small store to my sons Thomas Brown and James Brown in equal shares.
     Also I bequeath the new store now in course of erection to my son Samuel Brown as long as he lives and then to my sons James Brown and Thomas Brown.
     Also I bequeath all my share of the fishing room in my possession since Mr. Saunders death to my sons James, Samuel and Thomas in equal Shares.
     Also I bequeath the shop now occupied by my son Samuel to the said Samuel Brown absolutely.
     Also I bequeath my bed to my grandson Stephen Brown son of James.
     Also I bequeath my large chest to my son Thomas Brown.
     Also I bequeath my small hair trunk to my grandson James Brown of Thomas. Also I bequeath one small trunk to my grandson Edwin Brown son of James.
      Also I bequeath my box to my grandson Eric Brown of James.
     Also I bequeath my watch to my son Thomas Brown.
     Also I bequeath my large Bible to my son James Brown.
     Also I bequeath my wearing apparel to my sons James Brown and Thomas Brown.
     Also I bequeath my furniture to my wife Sarah Brown absolutely. Also I bequeath my sitting in the church to my son Thomas Brown.
     Also I bequeath my flakes to my sons James, Samuel and Thomas to use in common and lend to one another.
     Also I bequeath to my wife Sarah Brown the three hundred pounds left by Mr. Saunders.
     Also I bequeath to my grandsons James Brown of Thomas two sovereigns, to Edwin of James two sovereigns, to Eric of James one sovereign to Garland of James one sovereign, to Samuel of James one sovereign.
     Also I bequeath all the rest of my money of which I shall die possessed to my sons James Brown, Samuel Brown and Thomas Brown in equal shares and I also appoint my three sons aforesaid residuary legatees
     Also I appoint Mr. John Coffin and Mr. Henry Curtis executors of this my last will and testament.
     In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my hand and seal on this seventeenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty five.

Witnesses to the mark of the said James Brown the same having been previously read over to explained to and approved of by him in our presence who in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as attesting witnesses. John Coffin Kings Cove. Henry Curtis, Kings Cove. William Kirby SPG Missionary, Kings Cove. I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the last will and testament of James Brown deceased.
