Will of Charlotte Mabel Bastow from Newfoundland will books volume 23 page 162 probate year 1956
(wife of Hugh Bastow)

THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me CHARLOTTE MABEL BASTOW of St. John's, in the Island of Newfoundland, Married Woman.

FIRST - I revoke all former Wills and Testamentary dispositions by me at any time made and I appoint my husband Hugh A. Bastow and my son Gordon John Bastow the Executors of this my will.

SECOND - I give, devise and bequeath to my Executors all my property of whatsoever nature and wheresoever situate TO HOLD the same IN TRUST to pay the income dividends and profits arising therefrom to my said husband during his lifetime.

THIRD - On the death of my said husband I give and bequeath as follows:-

(a) My silver tray presented to my father by the St. John's Masonic Mutual Life Insurance Association to my son Gerald in appreciation of his war record;

(b) To my said son Gordon my clock presented by the District Grand Lodge of Newfoundland (E.C.) to my said father.

(c) To my daughter Ruth I give and bequeath a silver tea pot, silver sugar dish, and brass curb and dog irons;

(d) To my daughter Aileen I give and bequeath a silver teapot and brass candle sticks;

(e) To my son Douglas I give and bequeath one half dozen silver and mother of pearl knives and forks together with the case in which they are contained;

(f) To my son David I give and bequeath my silver cake dish and one dozen afternoon tea spoons;

(g) I direct that my Executor Gordon shall divide my table and bed linen and bedding as equally as he in his sole discretion can do so between such of my sons and daughters who are keeping house at the death of my said husband;

(h) I give, devise and bequeath the following pecuniary legacies, namely:-

(1) To the Church of England Orphanage the sum of One hundred dollars.

(2) To the Church of England Fabric Fund the sum of One hundred dollars.

(3) To the Church of England Clergy Retirement Fund the sum of One hundred dollars.

(4) To Queen's College the sum of fifty dollars.

(5) To the Committed of Management of the Church of England Cemetery the sum of Fifty dollars.

(i) I give and bequeath to said Executor the sum of Two hundred dollars TO HOLD the same IN TRUST to apply the income dividends and profits arising therefrom towards the repairs and upkeep of my family plot in the Church of England Cemetry in St. John's;

(j) I give and bequeath to my daughter Aileen my piano provided she does not possess one at my said husband's death, but should my said daughter possess a piano at that time I direct that my said piano be sold and the proceeds divided in accordance with the next paragraph of this my Will;

(k) I direct that my said Executor shall sell all the rest residue and remainder of my estate of whatsoever nature and wheresoever situate and divide the proceeds of such sale equally between my children, namely: Ruth Miller, Aileen Martin, Gordon John Bastow, Gerald Hugh Bastow, Douglas Frederick Bastow and David Alan Bastow. Before selling my bungalow Number 155 Hamilton Avenue, I direct that my Executor shall have same valued by some person whom he may in his sole discretion deem competant to do so, and my said Executor shall then give my said daughter Aileen an opportunity to purchase some at the appraised figure. Should my said daughter Aileen not signify her willingness to purchase the said bungalow at the said appraised figure within one month from the date that my said Executor shall have offered it to her, he my said Executor shall then dispose of same as he shall in his sole discretion deem fit and proper.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand at St. John's, aforesaid, this 11th day of April Anno Domini One thousand Nine hundred and Forty-seven.

Codicil to the Will of CHARLOTTE MABEL BASTOW

The piano which I have willed to my daughter Aileen I now wish to be sold to provide a piano fund divided equally between Aileen and my son David.

Dated at St. John's this 9th day of June 1956.

Charlotte Mabel Collier was a daughter of Samuel George Carnell Collier and Charlotte Augusta Wilkie. She was born 22 July 1886 and died 1 July 1956.

She married Hugh Alan Bastow, son of Marldon Allan Bastow and Fanny Jane Atwill. The marriage took place 25 July 1911. Hugh was born 3 October 1885 and died 26 August 1975.

Ruth Bernice Bastow (24 Jan 1916 - 21 May 2009) married (29 June 1944) Herbert Edward Green Miller (16 Dec 1912 - 5 May1960).

Aileen Kendall Bastow (23 July 1919 - 4 June 2013) married (11 November 1943) Graham Robert Martin (25 March 1917 - 20 Feb 1982).

Gordon John Collier Bastow (13 July 1921 - 1 June 2011) married (27 October 1962) Mardi Long.

Gerald Hugh Bastow (18 November 1922 - 25 August 1980) married (2 June 1948) Jean Wells.

Douglas Frederick Bastow (20 June 1924 - 10 July 2004) married (16 September 1950) Elizabeth (Bizz) Robins Chafe (14 November 1926 - 1 April 2010).

David Alan Bastow (1 June 1926 - 3 August 2003) married (23 August 1951) Susannah Parsons (22 July 1927 - 3 March 1994).

All of the above were hatched, matched and dispatched in St. John's but for Doug and Elizabeth who were married and died in Vancouver.
