Last will and Testament
of John Bartlett of
Brigus Planter
Deceased

In the name of God Amen.
This last will and testament of me John Bartlett, Planter of Brigus, Conception Bay Newfoundland was made this eighth day of April one thousand eight hundred and eighty six. I appoint my son Moses Bartlett, and my nephew John Bartlett of Brigus aforesaid as executors of this my last will and testament.

I give and bequeath to my four children Selina Patience, Anne, Moses, Jane Emma, the fifteen shares in the Capital Stock of the Commercial Bank of Newfoundland to be equally divided among them, share and share alike.

I give and bequeath to my son Moses the dwelling house at RiverHead, Brigus, aforesaid, together with Stable, store, carriage house, gardens and premises attached, with all beds, bedding & furniture contained within the said dwelling house save and except the bequests hereinafter mentioned.

Horse and carriage & farming goods I give and bequeath to the afore mentioned Moses Bartlett my son, also my water side premises at Riverhead together with the water side which I bought from John Antle, near James Normans store. 25 feet frontage and going back to the public road. I give and bequeath to my son Moses aforesaid. The Schooner "Victor" with all fishing gear together with the premises at Domins Labrador Fishing Room, stages, boats and all belonging to me at Domins, I further give and bequeath to my son Moses Bartlett aforesaid. The Garden situate at Brigus and known as The ??? Garden, I give and bequeath to my son Moses Bartlett.

To my daughter Selina Patience Bartlett I give and bequeath £200 cash together with the house and stable with garden and land attached thereto situate near the pond Middle Ridge, Brigus. I further devise that she have the use of the bedroom she now occupies as long as she lives in the house at Riverhead with her brother Moses. I further give and bequeath to her two feather beds with bedding and the bedstead she now uses.

To my daughter Anne Bartlett I give and bequeath £170 in cash together with the piano, also the house now in possession of George Gushue situate in Brigus aforesaid together with the land attached to the said house running back to Spracklins Estate. I further devise that she have the use of the bedroom in the house at River Head now occupied by me, and known as Fathers Bedroom I further give and bequeath to her two feather beds with bedding and bedstead.

To my daughter Jane Emma Bartlett I give and bequeath £180 in Cash, together with the Harmonium, also the house now in possession of George C. Jarrett situate in Brigus aforesaid with land attached thereto. I further devise that she have the use of the bedroom she now occupies, together with two feather beds and bedding and bedstead.

The farm known as the South Farm situate in Brigus aforesaid, I give and bequeath to my four children, Selina Patience, Anne, Moses and Jane Emma, the land with house and land to be equally divided among them.

The house now in the occupancy of ??? Mitchel situate near Beaver Pond, ??? I give and bequeath to my grandson Joseph Bartlett son of Isaac, whatever may be owing to me from money advanced towards the completion of Salmon Cove Church, I give and bequeath to the Diocesan Synod of Newfoundland for the benefit of the Brigus Endowment Fund. To each of my children aforementioned I give and bequeath a pew in St. Georges Church Brigus.

Whatever monies may be left when all just debts, and the aforesaid legacies have been paid, I devise shall be equally divided among my four children aforesaid viz Selina Patience, Anne, Moses, Jane Emma Bartlett.

And hereby revoking all other wills and testamentary dispositions by me heretofore made, I declare this to be my last will and testament this eighth day of April one thousand eight hundred and eighty six. John Bartlett.

Signed by the said John Bartlett as his last will and testament, in the presence of us, present at the same time who at his request, in his presence & in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses. Robert Hall Taylor Clerk in Holy Orders. S.E. Chafe School Teacher

Codicil

This is a codicil to my will dated the eight day of April anno Domini eighteen hundred and eighty six, I revoke that portion of my will in which I have given and bequeathed, certain Commercial Bank Stock, the Schooner "Victor" and other property to my son Moses, and I give and bequeath all the Commercial Bank Stock the schooner Victor and other property in my said will bequeathed to my son Moses unto Louisa the wife of my said son Moses to her sole use forever during her natural life, and after her decease to such of her children by her present husband should she leave any such children, her surviving or to her present husband or to any of his next of kin as she may be will duly executed appoint and in case of her failing so to appoint, then the same shall go to my said son Moses and his heirs - Provided always that the said Louisa may at anytime with the sanction of my said son Moses sell and dispose of the said Commercial Bank Stock, the schooner "Victor" and the said other property or any part thereof and apply the proceeds to such purpose and in such a manner, as my said son Moses may approve of in writing. In all other respects except as in this codicil mentioned above I confirm the said will. John Bartlett. Signed published and declared by the said John Bartlett the testator named in the within will above referred to as a codicil to the said will in our presence whom his presence, and in the presence of each other have hereto subscribed our names as witnesses to the due execution hereof.
