Will of Redmond Aylward
from Newfoundland will books volume 8 pages 291-292 probate year 1907

In re
      Redmond Aylward          deceased.

      This is the Last will and Testament of me Redmond Aylward of Kilbride, near St. John’s, in the Island of Newfoundland made this Thirteenth day of January Anno Domini nineteen hundred and three.    I give, devise and bequeath to my son John Aylward the farm upon which I now reside all all erections thereon and stock of every description thereon with the exception of two cows and and one horse which I bequeath to my son Nicholas the said farm being bounded on the South by the main road, on the north by the Waterford Bridge River, on the east by land of the Catholic Episcopal Corporation and on the west by land of Patrick Brien. Also to my said son John I give, devise and bequeath the two fields or pieces of land on Dorcey’s Lane, one on the East side and one on the west side.

I give devise and bequeath to my said son Nicholas the farm situate on the old Petty Harbor Road, bounded on the north by the Petty Harbor Road, on the South by the land of one Brennan, on the East by land of one Densmare, and on the west by land of James Aylward.

I give devise and bequeath to my sons Patrick, Nicholas, and John, those three houses situate on Hamilton Avenue, in the town of St. John’s aforesaid, one to each, the Eastern one I leave to Patrick, the one next to the Eastern one to Nicholas, and the western one to John.

I give devise and bequeath to my son Patrick that house owned by me situate opposite the Gas House on Water Street, in the town of St. John’s aforesaid, to have and to hold the said farms dwellings and stock unto my said sons forever.

Out of whatever moneys shall come into the hands of my executor hereinafter mentioned. I give, devise and bequeath the following sums to my children.

  • To my son John, Twelve hundred dollars,
  • to my son Nicholas eight hundred dollars.
  • To my daughter Catherine Brennan, Eight hundred dollars,
  • To my son Patrick six hundred dollars.
  • To my son Matthew Three hundred dollars,
  • to my son James Fifty dollars.
  • To my two grandchildren, Edward and Richard, children of my son John. I give and bequeath the sum of Fifty dollars each.

After funeral and all other expenses are paid, I desire that my executor shall devote the balance of any moneys which may be in his hands to the celebration of masses for the repose of my soul, and those of my wife and children. I appoint Rev. John Ryan, Dean of the diocese of St. John’s, Executor of this my will.    In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my hand at St. John’s, aforesaid, the day and date first above written Redmond Aylward. Signed by the said testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.    E.P.
