Will of Isabella Alexander from Newfoundland will books volume 5 page 604-606 probate year 1892 Last will and testament In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, Amen. I Isabella Alexander of Bonavista Newfoundland, Spinster, being of sound and clear mind, but weak in bodily health, do make this my last will and Testament, hereby revoking a former will made in July of this current year. I desire that all my just debts, be paid by my executors, as soon as may be convenient after my decease. 1st. I hereby appoint George T. Rendell, Merchant and Henry Cooke, Banker, both of St. John's, Newfoundland, as executors of this my last will, and desire that they each receive eight hundred dollars, which they will reserve to themselves out of the proceeds of my estate. 2nd. I give and bequeath to my niece Helen Elizabeth Martin, at present residing with me in Bonavista aforesaid, daughter of my deceased sister Elizabeth Alexander or Martin a life interest in the sum of twelve thousand dollars, the said sum to be at her decease divided in equal shares between, Ada, Catherine, Frederic Isabella, and Archibal Hall, children of my niece Isabella Martin or Hall, wife of Martin Luther Hall, of Liverpool England. 3rd. I give and bequeath to my niece Isabella Martin or Hall the sum of eight thousand dollars. 4th. I give and bequeath for the relief of poor aged men and women, members of the Church of England in Bonavista of the Church called Christ Church, the sum of two thousand dollars, to be invested by my executors, and interest therefrom to be distributed yearly by clergyman of the said Church for time being to such poor and aged of both sexes as he shall see fit and proper, always remembering that the distribution of said money, shall in no manner interfere with that of the fund, for poor widows and orphans, and called the "Alexander Charity" given by my deceased brother, Robt. Alexander, for that purpose. 5th. I give and bequeath as an endowment to the Church of England in Bonavista, called "Christ Church", the sum of four thousand dollars, which my executors will invest safely, and after giving yearly, one half the interest arising therefrom to ???? by the clergyman for the time being of said church, and will apply the remaining half for church expenses as may be needful from time to time 6th. I give and bequeath for the purpose of building a Mortuary Chapel in and the proper laying out of, that piece of land given by me last year, for a cemetery belonging to the Church of England in Bonavista, the sum of eight hundred dollars. 7th. I give and bequeath to the fund called the "Home Missions fund for the Church of England in Newfoundland the sum of two thousand dollars. 8th. I give and bequeath in trust to the Lord Bishop of Newfoundland (for the time being) the sum of eight thousand dollars to be used in restoring the Chancul of the Cathedral of "St. John the Baptist", in St. John's, Newfoundland, lately destroyed by fire. 9th. I give to my niece Helen Eliz Martin in trust for purposes mentioned in a private letter of instruction to her the sum of two thousand dollars. 10th. I give and bequeath to my late servant Mary Ann Goodland or Fennel wife of Michael Fennel of Bonavista the sum of two hundred dollars for her sole use and behoof. 11th. My dwelling house here in Bonavista with grounds surrounding it, will be sold and proceeds added to my general estate unless my niece Helen Elizabeth Martin should wish to retain it in her possession, if she should so wish, she must be placed in possession thereof; and the furniture, books, plate, and other articles may be held by her, or sold as she may wish. 12th. I give and bequeath to my cousin Mr. Alexander Graham of St. John's farmer, the sum of twelve hundred dollars. 13. I give and bequeath to the Revd Augustus E. C. Bailey at present Rector of "Christ Church" Bonavista the sum of twelve hundred dollars. 14th. I give and bequeath to the Fisherman's and Sailors Home in St. John's Newfoundland for the purpose of making additional accommodation therein the sum of two thousand dollars. 15th. I give and bequeath four thousand dollars, for the purpose of building a "Women's Ward", in the general hospital in St. John's Newfoundland. The residue of my property to be divided equally between my two nieces Isabella Martin or Hall of Liverpool England and Helen Elizabeth Martin at present residing with me in Bonavista Newfoundland witness my hand at Bonavista the twentieth day of August one thousand eight hundred and ninety two.
