Please note that while the Baptismal records begin 1780, these burial records as contained in the Vital Statistics version, do not begin until 1844. As at least two examples that I know of in the original parish records, give more information than was copied into the Vital Statistics version in the 1940s, readers are well advised to consult the original parish records, at St Davids Presbyterian Church, Elizabeth Avenue, St Johns NL.

Henry David WINTON	d Jan 8 1855	St Johns	61 yrs	not given	not given	Henry David Winton was b 1793 Withecombe Raleigh, Exmouth, Devon, the son of Rev. Robert & Theresa Maria Winton. He married Elizabeth NICHOLSON. He was an outspoken and controversial newspaper editor during a time of sectarian and political strife in NL. In his earlier years he was supportive of reform and associated with the emancipation of the Roman Catholic Church. However, as he grew older, his stances became increasingly anti-Catholic and supportive of the ''established'' order. He was attacked on Saddle Hill in May 1835, while enroute from Carbonear to Harbour Grace, by a group of disguised persons, who stuffed his ears with mud and gravel and then mutilated his ears.
