Excerpt from Dr. Seary's, Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland, MUN 1977.

CLINTON, a surname of England, Scotland and Ireland, according to Bardsley from the English place name Glinton (Northamptionshire) or Glimpton(Oxfordshire).

Traced by Guppy in Hertsfordshire. MacLysaght found the name rare now, but prominent in medievval Irish records.

In Newfoundland:

Early instances: Henry of Harbour Breton, 1837 (DPHW30); Henry, of Jersey Harbour, 1853 (DPHW 106); Charles of Fox Cove (Bay de Nord), 1871 Lovell

Modern Status: Rare, at St. John's
