CHAFFEY, a surname of England, ? not re-corded elsewhere, ? a variant of CHAFE, or ? from the English place name Chaffhay Farm (Devon), containing the Old English elements cealf - calf and (ge)haeg - (? worker at the) calves' enclosure. (Gover).

In Newfoundland:

Early instances: Thomas, of Bonavista, 1803 (DPHW 70); James Cheaffy, of Greenspond, 1838 (DPHW 76); John Chaffey, of Change Islands, 1843 (DPHW 83); Thomas Chaffy, of Amherst Cove (Bonavista B.), 1871 (Lovell); Joseph Chaffey, of Crabbe's Brook, 1871 (Lovell); James, of Shambler's Cove, 1871 (Lovell); Joseph Chaffy, farmer of Codroy, 1877 (Lovell).

Modern status: Scattered, especially in the St. George's and Bonavista South districts.
