On first starting out, a researcher should first visit the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL). You pay a onetime fee of $ 10.00 and you are registered for life with them. They will give you a brief orientation on all the records and how to fill out the retrieval slips and help you in any way they can.
They will even brief on the records that are available in the areas you are searching. They also do research on your behalf by snail mail for a fee of $ 10.00 per name searched. This can be helpful if you are out of town and only a lookup of one or two names, otherwise, it does get a bit expensive. The Provincial Archives is located on the main floor of the Colonial Building on Military Road in St. John's. The main intersections are Military Road and Bannerman Road for anyone coming by vehicle and for anyone mailing to them, the address is as follows:
Provincial Archives of Newfoundland & Labrador (PANL) Colonial Building Military Road, St. John's, Newfoundland A1C 2C9
