  TRINITY BAY MARRIAGES
1808 - 1819

To the researcher: In the transcription process, every attempt has been made to copy the original Trinity Bay parish records ‘word for word’. There are several proof-readings before each file is submitted to the central office, where they are again carefully checked, before being downloaded to the internet. Even so, after 195 years of aging, weathering, and fading, some areas of the records can often be difficult to impossible to read. To complicate matters, clergymen and lay people of the time used many abbreviations of their own design, and in general, seem to have given little thought to any future efforts to read and interpret their writing. The result is that, with some of them, their writing would be difficult to read if written only recently, much less almost two hundred years ago.

The basic idea underlying this whole effort is  to make these records available for genealogists, in as clear and precise a way as humanly possible, and where there is doubt over the meaning or spelling of a word or phrase, to indicate such and to offer a best guess as to the actual and real intent of the original writer, as long as the guess or opinion is clearly identified as such.

With that in mind, the following conventions have been adopted by this transcriber:

Example                     Meaning

Frances?                     The word looks like Frances

Fran??                        Sure of ‘Fran’, can’t read rest of word

F??es                          Sure of ‘F’ and ‘es’, can’t read missing letters

?????                          one completely unreadable word

??? ???                       Two completely unreadable words

???????????????      An unreadable phrase or sentence

Abbreviations             Word Meant

Rob’t                           Robert

Rich’d                          Richard

Eliz’h                           Elizabeth

Thos.                           Thomas
