City optometrist, Rotarian killed in Kitty Hawk car wreck
By Gary Kean, Star Staff Writer

In a tragic twist of fate, Dr. John Snow was killed Monday on vacation in the United States where he was taking in the First Flight Centennial Celebration - the 100th anniversary of flight in Kitty Hawk, N.C.
The Corner Brook optometrist and his wife Kathleen were involved in a collision in North Carolina Monday afternoon. An aviation buff who once flew his own single-engine Cherokee Piper out of Deer Lake, Dr. Snow had been given the trip as a gift from his children for his 60th birthday.
The accident happened on US 158 in Kill Devil Hills in Currituck County, which neighbours Dare County where the First Flight Centennial Celebration is taking place.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Woodrow Everette, a Jeep Cherokee driven by Dr. Snow, pulled out of a restaurant parking lot and attempted to cross the north-bound lane when he entered the path of another Jeep Cherokee driven by Ronald Wayne Allen Jr., 28, of Elizabeth City. The vehicle driven by Allen hit the passenger side of Snow's vehicle and both Jeeps sustained heavy damage.
Dr. Snow was pronounced dead at the scene. Mrs. Snow was airlifted to Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, VA where she was listed in stable condition with a broken arm and other injuries.
Allen was also taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries.
According to the Outer Banks Sentinel, a newspaper in Nags Head, N.C., Allen was driving while his license was revoked. There have been no at-fault charges filed, according to the paper.
Dr. Snow's son Jonathan in Corner Brook, who received the tragic news from a state trooper, told The Western Star that bright glare from the sun had apparently prevented the drivers of both vehicles from clearly seeing each other prior to the collision.
Professionally, Dr. Snow was an active member of the Newfoundland Association of Optometrists, with whom he served as the representative for the Canadian Association of Optometrists.
Dr. Snow was well-known in many circles outside his more than 35-year career as an eye doctor. He was an avid member of the Corner Brook Rotary Club, including being a driving force behind the annual Rotary Music Festival. He was also heavily involved in the library, serving on the boards of the Corner Brook Public Library as well as the Newfoundland and Labrador Library Association, the Canadian Library Association and the Humber Literacy Council.
The news came as quite a shock to Dr. Snow's numerous friends back in Corner Brook. Martin Steele said Dr. Snow was one of the first friends he made when the art gallery owner arrived in Corner Brook in 1979.
"He was one of the first people to befriend me and we have been involved with the Rotary Club together for many years," said Steele. "John certainly was a very intelligent man and was committed to any project he undertook, whether it was professionally in his work as an optometrist or in his work with the library on the local, regional, provincial or national level."
"He certainly is going to be missed. I've had many people dropping by all day from all different walks of life within the community, all of whom were saying the same thing: that he's going to be sorely missed on so many levels."

Page 2 (continued from page 1)
Dr. John Snow dead at 60

Steele said he was always amazed at how well-read Dr. Snow was, quipping that "he must have read every book in the library" to which he dedicated so much of his life. He was also well aware of Dr. Snow's fondness of aviation.
"He had been looking forward to this trip to Kitty Hawk for months," said Steele.
Bernd Staeben was also befriended by Dr. Snow when Staeben emigrated from Germany in 1951. They evolved from being school chums to sharing a table together at the Corner Brook Rotary Club's weekly meetings for over 30 years and working on various community projects together. He, too, noted Dr. Snow's knowledge of just about any topic of conversation and he also applauded Dr. Snow's incredible work on behalf of the library and Rotary.
"His commitment to the library concept for this province was really an inspiration for people," said Staeben. "He really wanted people to read more and broaden their scope and he was really a mover and a shaker for the library system."
"It's a deep loss for Corner Brook. He meant a lot to this community and Corner Brook meant a lot to him."

His son Jonathan reiterated his father's varied interests.
"He had many interests including, reading, volunteering, travel, music, computers, space exploration, his family, cats - including his cat Exeter - as well as flying ...," said Jonathan. "... He became a very proud grandfather this past fall, with the birth of his first grandchild, Keaton John Sperling-Snow. Family played an important role in his life, as he was always aware and involved in all his children's activities, whether it was academics, professional or personal."
Dr. Snow is survived by his wife Kathleen, and his children: Jennifer (husband Jens) in Los Angeles, Lisa (husband Ken and son Keaton) in London, Ont. and Jonathan in Corner Brook; his sister Beverly (Husband John), and brother James, both of Corner Brook.
Funeral arrangements for Dr. Snow have yet to be finalized.
