First lady of the accordion fondly remembered
by Frank Gale
Star Staff Writer, Stephenville
Donald Tompkins, a native of Tompkins in the Codroy Valley and
a resident of this town for many years, says the death of Minnie
White is the loss of a unique person. He said when Mrs. White
came to the Codroy Valley in the 1930s, she fitted in well from
the start and came to be known as a professional housekeeper
and homemaker. Tompkins said during her married life she and
her husband, Richard White, a farmer and professional sports
fisherman guide, raised a large family of six.
"Minnie was
an outstanding citizen who became a part of the Codroy Valley
area. I nominated her and wrote up her qualifications, which
recognized her for her community service in providing music for
charitable efforts and community affairs in the Codroy Valley
and Port aux Basques area," he said. That nomination garnered
her an entry into the Order of Canada. While he says he is not
qualified to comment on her music, Tompkins said when Mrs. White
arrived in the Codroy Valley, a noted top violin musician at
that time in that area - Archie MacDonald - said her music had "lots
of ding." He remembers her accordion music was enjoyed by
all who attended social events where she played.
Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Kevin Aylward, legislature
member for St. George's-Stephenville East, offered condolences
to the White family on Monday. "Mrs. White was one of our
province's most treasured musicians," Aylward said. "She
was talented at playing many instruments including the mandolin,
fiddle, piano and organ, but it was as an accordion player that
she endeared herself to the hearts of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians
and to people around the world. "She was truly our first
lady of the accordion." Mrs. White learned to play the accordion
as a young girl but stopped to raise her family. In the 1960s,
she picked up her accordion again when her children were grown
and began her extensive recording and performing career.
Mrs. White recorded four albums and was a regular performer at
the Starlite Motel, as well as various clubs in western Newfoundland
and folk festivals across the province.
She received the Harry Hibbs Award for East Coast Music, the
Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award from the East
Coast Music Association, and has been inducted into the Order
of Canada and the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Hall
of Honour.
"We are indebted to Mrs. White for her contribution to the arts community
in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Aylward. "She will
be remembered for her incredible talent, her body of work, and her kind
spirit."
