A VERY, VERY SPECIAL BIRTHDAY - this is from the front page of The Western Star and I thought it was a very special milestone in someone's life.
Headline reads: 107-YEAR-0LD SARAH WHITE REFLECTS ON OLD-TIME CHRISTMASES Reaching into the storehouses of her mind, Sarah White remembers going sliding in the snow as some of her best memories of Christmas. However, when you have more than 100 Christmases to think back on, recalling one special thing on the spur of the moment is somewhat of a challenge. Mrs. White turns 107 today and is still in fairly good health. Having a birthday so close to Christmas didn't seem like much to her years ago but as she aged so did her family's interest in making sure her birthday was celebrated in a proper manner. She said Christmas seemed so much better when she was young because there was lots of fun. There was always Mummering during the season, dancing and visiting people's houses. However, she said "they were mostly all your own people you were going to see or coming to see you."
Mrs. White said there was no big thing about presents when she was young. In fact, you might get a candy from Santa Claus if you were lucky. She said her grandmother - Katherine White - made all the children hang up their candy, just to see who would keep it the longest. She said while their's would be gone through the Christmas season, her grandmother's candy would still be hung up the next Christmas. As for Christmas dinner, there were always some chickens and things like steamed pudding; however, the main dish would always be meat pie - usually made with rabbit. "But I'll always remember how we loved sliding on the hills at Christmas, it was such fun," she recalled. Mrs. White said her family always had a Christmas tree, but with no electricity in the early years, it would not be lit. But it would be decorated beautifully with dried white flowers that were picked in the fall and kept to string out like today's garland, but without the glitter. She recalls going to midnight mass by horse and sleigh and it was a rough ride over the snowdrifts, but yet enjoyable despite the young mare hauling them quickly over the bumps. She said people worked hard back then, but still life seemed simpler and Christmas was a special time to take a break from work and do family things. Once again, Mrs. White's family will have "a time" for her on her birthday today and friends and family are welcome to drop by and help celebrate. There will be music as usual by local musicians who keep coming by each year. Mrs. White has nine children of whom seven are living - Magdalen, Clarence, Zita, Raymond, Ronald, Doreen and Joan. Her sons Earl and Dean predeceased her; as did her husband James. She has 29 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
Naturally at her age, Mrs. White requires more sleep than she used to; however, when it comes to sitting down for a "yarn" she can still recall many details from her past. She still enjoys watching some of the soap operas on television. There's a photo of her with the story and the caption reads: "At 107 years of age, Sarah White of 33 Main Street in Stephenville still wears an infectious smile and is always ready to talk to people about the past and even about the way Christmas used to be. Here, she is seen with three of her children including, from left, Sister Joan White, Ronald White and Clarence White. She is celebrating her 107th birthday today."
