Passed on: November 15th, 2015

It is with a great deal of sadness that Rita Blanchard's family and friends let the world know a fiery part of our world has been extinguished. Rita Marie Blanchard joined her husband Charles at the Legion in the sky on November 15, 2015 in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Rita was predeceased by Charles by many years and found great comfort in camping, laughing, music - especially Newfie music - and her family and many friends. Rita is survived by sons Charles (Anna-Marie), Leo (Kathy), Archie (Bernadette) and daughters Janice (Don) and Kimberily (Walter). She loved to hear the adventures of her grandchildren Jessicah, AJ, Samantha, Billy, Leah, Tom and Victoria and enjoyed laughing with them on visits. Rita leaves many special friends, especially Ron, and family who fondly remember her keen sense of humour and no nonsense approach to the bumps along the road in life. At her request, Rita was cremated and will be interred beside her husband Charles in Inverness, Nova Scotia. At her request, donations to the Canadian Diabetic Association are welcomed.

BRETT, Cecil
Passed on: November 10th, 2015
Sop's Arm

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather on Tuesday November 10th, 2015 in his 91st year at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, but thankful for a life well lived. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his daughters: Norma (Harvey), Rosalind (John), June (Phil) and Brada (Joe), sons: Dana and Kirk (Kelli), son-in-law Allister, thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, sister Dorothy and a large circle of family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Joyce and daughter Pauline. Dad was well known for his knowledge of hunting and fishing around the woods and rivers of Sop's Arm. A man born before his time - he enjoyed inventing the most unique things. We will miss his witty humor and the many games of Skip-Bo with him. He loved it when he beat the "chatty girls". Words cannot express the thanks we feel towards Coleen and her staff at the "home" for the love and care given to Dad during his stay with them. It was indeed his home away from home. Cremation has taken place and graveside service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
In times like this we know the true meaning of family.

DOWNEY, Mary Carmel
Born: July 16th, 1926
Passed on: November 9th, 2015
Heaven has a new angel.
Mary Carmel Downey (nee Russell)
, born July 16, 1926, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on Monday, November 9, 2015 at the Western Health - Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital - surrounded by love and family. After marrying Barney Downey (deceased) on August 14, 1946, Carmel worked as a nurse's aide until she delivered her first born, her favorite son, Donald (Jenny) of St. Fintan's, NL. Once she became a mom she devoted her life to raising her children in Stephenville Crossing, later relocating to Stephenville in 1968. So devout a mom, her next four children, Debbie Roberts Baker - deceased (Paul Anthony Roberts - deceased) (Gary) of Windsor, Ontario, Wanda Bottoset (Elso) of Windsor, Ontario, Lonnie Jason (Ron) of Stephenville/Gillam, Manitoba and Pam Mergl (John) of Niagara Falls, Ontario she delivered at home. There was too much to do at home to go to the hospital. Her second and last hospitalization was for the delivery of her last child, Celeste (Jack/Micheal McIsaac) of Oakville, Ontario because of the disappearing acts through her pregnancy where she would be huge in her maternity wear, have a nap and wake up being able to wear her regular clothing. Her physician encouraged her to deliver in the hospital. Carmel enjoyed carpentry and undertook many renovations on herself. In addition, she was fierce with a paint brush - dancing the whole time. Her home was her domain and she did everything within her power to make it bright and cheery. Change, Carmel so enjoyed change. It brightened her spirits which reflected her pride of ownership. In her senior years, Carmel sprouted into a social butterfly getting to know her community, speed walking, jogging, cross-country skiing, knitting and giving away her wares. In the final years of her life, Carmel cared for her husband, Barney, until he too entered eternal life on May 14, 2015. Carmel will be dearly missed by her children and spouses, grandchildren and spouses, great-grandchildren, sisters and spouses, nieces and nephews, all other family members, friends and to those who were fortunate enough to know her. The family would like to thank the Physicians, RNs, LPNs and staff who have provided care and friendship to Mary Carmel since August 16, when she initially took ill at both Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville and at the Health Sciences Center in St. John's. The family would also like to thank the Ambulance Attendants/EMS Workers for the caring, sensitive, respectful, kind, gentle treatment they provided to Mary Carmel during their attendances at her home. Visitation will take place at Russell's Funeral Home in Stephenville on Thursday November 12, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral Service will take place at St. Stephen's Church, Stephenville on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 10 am. Interment will follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery. TIZZARD, Mary
Born: August 2nd, 1931
Passed on: November 11th, 2015
Aim high and you'll always go further!
It is with sadness and thanks that we say our final goodbyes to Mary Tizzard. Mary passed away peacefully November 11, 2015 at WMRH, after a lengthy battle with several illnesses. She was 84. She missed her beloved husband Gordon every day. He predeceased her in 2013. Mary had no children, but adored her dogs, especially her last one, Jake, who comforted her in her grief and loneliness. Jake has found a new home with Marie Swannie, a good hearted and loyal friend of Mary's. Mary came to Corner Brook in 1962 from Montreal, where she was born and raised and received her education as an RN and a Bachelor of Science degree. Mary was placed in Corner Brook by the VON for two years as payback for a grant she had received. Once she met the many mothers, children and families she visited and helped daily, she was hooked on Newfoundland. Shortly after her arrival she was invited to join The Playmakers, where she met many of her life long friends and her future husband. Mary was an animal lover and an amazing cook. She was always helpful and generous to a fault, and she loved her chosen profession. Before Mary made Corner Brook her home, she worked as a stewardess for Trans Canada Airlines. She told many stories of those years, where she served personalities such as Louis Armstrong and Bob Hope, but also jumped in a passenger's lap during strong turbulence. Mary went along with her husband Gordon, when he was transferred to Labrador City and North Sidney. In Labrador City she was introduced to Kathryn Wright, who has remained a very close friend to Mary and who is to this day the biggest fan of Mary's cooking and kindness. She will be missed by her long time friend Judith Fraser, her colleague and close friend Marilyn Fleming, her niece Liz Fiorini, her step-son Lee Tizzard and the Monaghan, Hatch, Fraser, Butt, Fleming, Burt and Wright families. Ursula Monaghan, Mary's friend of 45 years, will remember her as a good, kindhearted, head strong, intelligent and fun loving woman and will miss her - warts and all. There will be a visitation and celebration of Mary's life on Friday, November 13 from 7-9 pm at Fillatre's Funeral Home on St. Mark's Ave. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the SPCA. The guest book may be signed by visiting www.fillatre.ca
