Arch Brewer possessed a genuine gift for making people laugh. It is perhaps for his quick wit that he will be especially remembered. Mr. Brewer was equally known for his dedication to volunteering in his hometown of Corner Brook. His 50-year involvement with the Scouting movement is among the many ways he demonstrated his support for his community. He served the Boy Scouts of Canada as a commissioner for training, as a District Commissioner for Cubs, as a long-time director of Camp Stanfield (Scout Camp), and he was the first Guild Master of the Second Baden Powell Guild in Newfoundland. For more than a decade, Mr. Brewer also gave of his time to the Canadian Paraplegic Association and was named that organization's provincial Volunteer of the Year in 1995. Mr. Brewer was a devoted member of his church. He enjoyed tremendously the fellowship of the people of the Salvation Army Temple, where he was also appreciated as a tireless volunteer. Many will also remember Arch Brewer as a true nature lover. He relished being outdoors. Issues around conservation of the Earth were among his most important concerns, a theme often reflected in the poetry he enjoyed writing. His love of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador was very strong. He loved its people, history and scenic beauty, many examples of which he captured in his drawings.
A wonderful husband, father and friend, Arch Brewer will be lovingly missed. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of your choice or to the youth programs of the Salvation Army Temple. Visitation will take place at the Country Haven Funeral Home on Saturday, November 14 from 7-9 p.m. and on Sunday, November 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will take place at the Salvation Army Temple on Citadel Drive in Corner Brook on Monday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. The family guest book may be signed or memorial donations may be made by visiting our website at www.country-haven.ca

HOWE, Mr. Gordon Robert
Parksville

It is with great sadness that we announce Gordon's passing on November 16th, 2009, in Parksville, British Columbia. Preceded by his parents, Alonzo and Sophie Howe; Gordon is survived by his loving wife and soulmate, Margaret Suzanne (O'Reilly); sons: Jonathon Gordon and William Robert (Heather); his beautiful granddaughter, Keana Margaret Elaine Trudel; brother, Fred (Rose); sisters: Beulah Schroeder, Hazel Dumond, and Valerie Hounsell (Dave); aunts: Liza Hiscock and Millie Goosney; the O'Reilly family: Rosemary, Betty, Terry (Mary) and Mike (Leanne); his many nieces, nephews and cousins. Gord was loved by all who knew him and we will miss him greatly. Terms such as loving, dependable, honest, hardworking, determined, intelligent, integrity, creative and fun loving go a long way in describing Gord's character. He let very few things in life get him down and was always quick with a smile and was first in line to help out a neighbor or friend. Gordon was a truly incredible man who threw his hat in the ring many times in his full 66 years. He was a member of the Canadian Military, stationed in Germany for three years with the armored core division, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, a heavy equipment operator and trainer, a sawmill owner/operator. He ran a night club and lounge in Baie Verte, NL (with a fruit stand attached!). He even owned a motorcycle dealership in Labrador City for a short while. On top of that, he was a miner of iron ore, coal and gold, moving to Tumbler Ridge in 1984 to begin work at Quintette Coal as a Mine Operations Foreman. His true passions though were hunting and fishing and spending time outdoors with his family and his good buddies. His recent salmon fishing trip to Bamfield and his annual moose hunt in Tumbler Ridge were absolute highlights for him, as were his visits with his sisters and brother. As Gordon made a life for his family, he did so by leaving "The Rock" and heading for the Rockies. Accordingly, celebrations of his life will take place in both areas in the summer of 2010. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend one of these ceremonies in Tumbler Ridge, BC, and/or Corner Brook, NL. Details to follow. In lieu of flowers, at Gordon's request, donations can be made to The BC Children's Hospital Foundation, "Think of a Child", 938 West 28th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 4H4. 1-604-876-2444. www.bcchf.ca/memorialgiving

MYRDEN, Walter (Duke) Alexander
Passed away, surrounded and comforted by loving family, on November 16, 2009, Walter Myrden of St. John's, aged 54 years. Walter spent his childhood and most of his adult life in Corner Brook, where he had great memories of growing up on West Valley Road with family and friends. Walter particularly enjoyed golfing in the summers and curling in the winter, and he was an avid reader. He graduated Nova Scotia Agricultural College in 1976, went into the family business and in 1979 became owner/operator. Walter expanded West Coast Excavating from a landscape and paving operation into a major water and sewer, and heavy construction company where he remained as owner until his retirement in 2004. In 1979 he married Janet (Rees) and became the proud father to Douglas and David. In 1982 Walter became the proud father to Scott. Over the years Walter volunteered with the Scouting movement, sports groups, the Progress Club and was on the Board of Directors of the Blomidon Golf Club. After several years on the board of the Water and Sewer Section of the Newfoundland and Labrador Road Builders Association, Walter was made a lifetime member in 2006. As failing health enveloped him in later years, Walter drew inspiration and strength from a number of sources, including son Scott's recent engagement, playing with his precious grandchildren, and enjoying the company and compassion of his many family and friends. Walter & Janet recently celebrated his 30th wedding anniversary.
Survived by his wife Janet (Rees) of St. John's; father Gerald of Gander; sons: Douglas (Janice), Oakville; David (Sally), Agassiz; Scott (Jennifer), Calgary; Grandchildren: Rebecca & Andrew; Holly-Rae; sister: Vicky (Art); brothers: Gary (Sharon); Chris (Debbie). Predeceased by his mother Mona (Butt). The family greatly acknowledges ALL of the acts of kindness and compassion over the past seven years that made each challenge easier. We particularly thank all of the staff at Palliative Care for all of the dignity and comfort that they afforded Walter and his family. Walter leaves us a legacy of strength, laughter, love and fierce determination and will be greatly missed. Memorial service 2 p.m. on Saturday, November, 21, 2009 at St. Thomas' Anglican Church. Celebration of his life to follow at 3:00pm - 5:00pm at the Sheraton, St. John's. Donations in his memory may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation, the Palliative Care Unit at the Miller Centre, or a charity of one's choice.
