SNOW, Gordon Warrick
99 Kippens Road, Kippens,
Newfoundland
October 2, 1930 - November 4, 2006
76 years
Born in Deer Lake, Newfoundland on October 2, 1930 to Gordon E. and
Minnie Snow, Gordon Warrick Snow grew up enjoying the woods and waterways
of the west coast. Always an avid angler and hunter, he refined his
skills over the years and his nature travels grew wider. He worked
from a young age at all sorts of jobs: logging, road construction,
taxi driving, and moving furniture to name a few. He married Doris
Dennis of Nicholsville on May 10, 1955 and soon, Gloria (1955) his
first child was born. The young family moved to the Stephenville area
to pursue opportunities offered by the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base.
Gordon worked at the base fire station for almost two decades. During
that time his family grew with the addition of Jamie (1960), Pamela
(1968) and Penny (1969). When the American base closed, Gordon went
to work as a fire fighter for the town of Stephenville and worked there
for the next 26 years. His time with the men at the Stephenville Fire
Department was special to him. The men he worked with were considered
his brothers. Over his life, Gordon loved his work but his passion
was the great outdoors. He spent every free moment outside in the sunshine,
wind, rain or snow. He fished, hunted, cut wood, walked, fed birds
and small animals, picked berries - he did anything to spend time in
his element. Gordon knew every inch of the west coast. He had friends
at every turn, and buddies with whom he shared his life and passion
for nature. He spent every summer for over 50 years on the banks of
South West Brook. He angled the rivers all over his beautiful island.
He guided many people who were drawn to his warm personality, infectious
energy and welcoming smile. He loved the flora, fish and fauna that
inhabited his island and shared this love with his wife, children,
grandchildren and friends. Since retiring in 1993, he spent all of
his time doing the things he loved: camping, playing cards, smelting
with Mike, salmon fishing with Alec and Harold, building campfires
and driving his quad. Diagnosed with cancer in
2002, Gordon faced this battle with his usual quiet strength and courage.
He lived each day to the fullest. He spent his final summer at South
West Brook, enjoying the sound of the rushing water and feeling the
wind on his face. He came home to Kippens in September and bravely
faced his cancer. Always, he was a kind and loving husband, father
and grandfather more concerned with others' worries, hurts and pain
than his own. Surrounded by his family and his beloved dog, Gordon's
weary body went to its final rest on November 4, 2006, but his spirit
remains in the twinkling waters of South West Brook and in the hearts
of those who knew and loved him. Gordon's life was well lived and he
was well loved. He is survived by his brothers: Calvin (Edwina) and
Claude (Veronica), sister: Myrtle (Harold), his wife of 51 years Doris,
children: Gloria (Jim), Jamie (Vita), Pamela (Tim) and Penny (Tony),
and nine grandchildren: Eric, Joel, Neill, Bethany, Madison, Savannah,
Logan, Brady and Myles. He leaves a wide circle of friends and neighbors,
fishing buddies and camping friends. He will be missed by his faithful
dog Morgan. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, November
8, 2006 at 2 p.m. at St. Augustine's Church on Hillview Avenue in Stephenville.
Cremation to follow. Friends and family may call at Russell's Funeral
Home, 57 Prince Rupert Drive, Stephenville, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
