72nd WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
by Frank Gale
Star Staff Writer

Ted and Josephine Russell of 3 Kippens Road here are celebrating another milestone today - their 72nd wedding anniversary.
Both were born and raised in Stephenville in an area that later became part of the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base. They knew each other since they were children.
Mr. Russell recalls going to work in the woods in the Deer Lake/Humber River area for two months, cutting every day except Sunday, to save up money to get married. He earned a grand total of $48. He said $10 of that went toward a gallon of rum, which was watered down some to go around; $10 for his suit; while his wife spent $3 for a wedding dress and $5 went to purchase a ring.
He said another $10 went to the priest for marrying them, an amount virtually unheard of in those days for such a service.
They were married at St. Stephen's Church on Nov. 21, 1933.
After the wedding, he even had a few dollars left in his pocket. Their wedding reception was held at the house of his father, Joe Russell.
The couple built their own home in Kippens where they still reside. Mr. Russell turns 93 on Nov. 28 and Mrs. Russell will celebrate her 93rd birthday on Jan. 19.
The couple had five children, including Mark and Lyle, who both live near them in Kippens; Bernadette in South Dakota, U.S.A.; Ray in Nova Scotia; and the late Lorna. They have 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
The couple ran Russell's Grocery Store in Kippens for 43 years and raised their family in the process.
Mr. Russell originally joined the Knights of Columbus in Corner Brook about 50 years ago and switched and became a charter member of the Stephenville Group when it was formed.
He's the charter president of the Kippens Seniors Club and still contributes to that group, despite not being as active these days. He suffered a heart attack earlier this year but hopes to return to bingo at some time in the near future.
Church has always been a major part of their life.
But Mr. Russell says the secret to them having such a long marriage is they play bingo together.
