It is with great sadness that the family of the late Paul Joseph Hynes announce his passing at his residence on Thursday, October 30, 2003 at the age of 49 years. He will be sadly missed by nine brothers: Hubert (Becky) Hynes of Kippens, Anthony (Cissy) Hynes of Port au Port East, Peter (Carmel) Hynes of Port au Port East, Maurice Hynes of Steady Brook, Clyde (Margaret) Hynes of St. John's, Gus (Peggy) Hynes of Port au Port East, Pius (Karen) Hynes of St. John's, Rèmi (Shirley) Hynes of Port au Port East, Stephen Hynes of Kingston, Ontario; and five sisters: Genevieve Boutilier of Kingston, Ontario, Theresa Randell of Bolton, Ontario, Laverne (Dennis) Townsend of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Bernice Pike of Mississauga, Ontario, Pauline (Kenny) Smith of Barrie, Ontario and a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Augustine and Mildred Hynes. Friends may call at Russell's Funeral Home, 39 Queen Street, Stephenville on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Monday, November 3rd at 2:00 p.m. from the Maria Regina Parish in Port au Port East. Cremation service will take place after the funeral service. As expressions of sympathy, flowers accepted or donations to the Schizophrenia Society would be greatly appreciated.

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Blanche DuBourdieu announce her passing at the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre in Stephenville Crossing on Thursday, October 30, 2003 at the age of 100 years. She will be sadly missed by her three sons: Cyril DuBourdieu of Port au Port East, John (Mildred) DuBourdieu of Ontario, Kevin DuBourdieu of Port au Port East and two daughters: Eileen (Robert) Hann of Port au Port East, Patricia Goulart of St. John's and daughter-in-law Leila DuBourdieu of Port au Port and 22 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband John DuBourdieu in 1970 and her son Ronald DuBourdieu in 1982, two brothers, Wallace and Theodore Hynes and sister Muriel Goodyear. Friends may call at the Maria Regina Parish in Port au Port East on Saturday (after 2:00 p.m.) and Sunday. Funeral Services will take place on Monday, November 3rd 10:00 a.m. at the Maria Regina Parish in Port au Port East with interment in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Port au Port East. Leaving to mourn six daughters: Shirley Ellsworth (Sam), Vivian Major (Lloyd) of Rocky Harbour, Gladys Payne (Henry), St. Paul's, Ruby Ellsworth (Lloyd) of Rocky Harbour, Flossie Humber (Alex) of Corner Brook, Hughena Payne (Hounsell) of Cow Head; special granddaughter Charlene Bennett (Truman) of Brampton, ON; two brothers: Gordon Bennett (Margaret), Ronald Bennett (Olive), St. Paul's; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Clyde W. November 1, 1991; grandson Gary Ellsworth; sisters Eva & Freda; brothers George & Charlie; parents Arthur & Clares Jane Bennett. Elizabeth was an active member of the Christian congregation of the Jehovah's witness in Hampden and Deer Lake for many years. She was well known for her participation in the Christian ministry, her hospitality and the love for her family and friends. The bride is the daughter of Floyd and Elizabeth Spracklin, and the groom is the son of Wilfrid and Tena Buckle all of Corner Brook. The bride chose her sister, Jennifer Spracklin, as her maid of honour. The bridesmaids were Allison Jenkins, sister of the groom, and long-time friends Kimberley Payne and Jennifer Ryan. The best man was Adam Buckle, brother of the groom. The groomsmen were Dion Barron, also Master of Ceremonies at the reception, Mike Brazil and Barry Jenkins. The flower girl was Alysha Jenkins, niece of the groom. Pictures followed on the beautiful Caribbean beach. A wonderful reception was held at the Occidental Gran Flamenco Resort in Punta Cana. The bride and groom honeymooned in Arizona, Nevada and California. The happy couple currently reside in Kingston, Ontario, where they both work as physiotherapists.

Roddy Nelson Brenton
, much loved husband, father, son and brother, passed away peacefully in Camrose, Alberta, the evening of November 17, 2003 at the age of forty-nine years after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Rod was born on August 12, 1954 in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, the second child of Harry and Kay Brenton (nee Turner). He graduated from Herdman Collegiate and eventually settled in Fort McMurray, Alberta, where he was a long-time employee of Syncrude, Canada. On May 10, 1980, he married his high school sweetheart, Nioma Walsh and raised two beautiful daughters, Leann and Mandy. Rod was a devoted family man. He was an avid outdoorsman and had many friends, with which he enjoyed, hunting, fishing, golfing, and ski-dooing. His unique character and sense of humour, his courageous spirit, and determination was an inspiration to all who knew him. Left to cherish his memory are wife Nioma (nee Walsh), his daughters, Leann Reid (Rob), and Mandy (Mike), both of Calgary, AB; his mother, Kay Brenton (Stephenville, NL); his three sisters, Deb (Calgary, AB), his twin sister Rhonda White (Gary) (Edmonton, AB), and Michelle (Tom) (Calgary, AB); his mother-in-law Mima Walsh (Pasadena, NL) and extended family, numerous relatives and friends. Rod was predeceased by his father, Harry Nelson Brenton in February 1978. Nioma, Leann and Mandy would like to say a special thank you to all the doctors and nurses who cared for Rod and to all the family and special friends who were such a comfort to him and them throughout his long illness. Kippens couple celebrating 70 years of marriage today

Ted and Josephine Russell
of Kippens are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary today. The couple, married on Nov. 21, 1933, are active people who live in their own home and remain involved in their community. They are members of St. Stephen's Parish at Stephenville, where they were married. They regularly attend bingo games and card games throughout the area. Ted is a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Council in Stephenville and holds the position of a past president of the Seniors Club of Kippens. Ted and Josephine were born and raised in Stephenville and knew each other from childhood. For 43 years they ran a grocery business near their home in Kippens. They had five children - Mark (Marion) and Lyle (Evelyn) of Kippens; Bernadette Shanaman in Rapid City, South Dakota, USA; Ray (Rita) in Halifax, N.S.; and Lorna, who passed away as a young child. The couple have 16 grandchildren, all living in mainland Canada and the U.S. and many great-grandchildren. The family is planning an open house on July 10, 2004, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Stephenville, when family members will have the opportunity to attend. Shortly after their anniversary, Ted and Josephine will be celebrating their 91st birthdays.

Bonne Bay woman dies at age 102
Ida Mae Caines, nee Cullihall
, died Friday at the age of 102 years. Mrs. Caines passed away at the Bonne Bay Health Centre in Norris Point. She was predeceased by her husband Aubrey Caines and her only son Gordon Cullihall. For Aunt Mae, as she was affectionately known, life began in Lobster Cove, a small fishing village near Rocky Harbour, on May 12, 1901. At the age of 18, she left Lobster Cove and headed for Boston where she pursued her life-long dream of becoming a nurse. She practiced in Boston General Hospital and later met fellow Newfoundlander Aubrey Caines of Bell Downs Point, near Cow Head. The couple married and moved back to Lobster Cove. Aubrey and Ida Mae were married 30 years before he passed away in 1974. Mrs. Caines leaves one sister Violet Shears of Rocky Harbour, daughter-in-law Myra Cullihall and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation will take place at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witness in Rocky Harbour. The funeral is scheduled to take place Sunday at 2 p.m.

Bridget (Bride) Byrne
was born in Kitchuses, Conception Bay, in 1914 the eldest daughter of William (Billy) and Catherine (Kate) Wade. She was educated at the local school and the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Conception Harbour. She came to Corner Brook in 1931 with her friend Kitty Mansfield and remained here the rest of her life. She met George W. Byrne, whom she married in 1937. Her life in Corner Brook was a happy and fulfilling one. Her kindness and generosity earned her many friends, and her in-laws took her into the Byrne family as one of themselves. Her husband, George, who predeceased her in 1980 was likewise loved by Bride's family, and thoroughly enjoyed the annual visits the family spent with her relatives in Kitchuses. She was a devoted wife and mother to her husband George and children Marie and Cyril. Her life values were simple and firm which were part of her devotion to her Christian and Catholic Beliefs. Her life was long, full, assured and her death was likewise without fuss or bother. She was deeply loved and we will all miss her very much. WW2 Veteran - War Bride

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Elizabeth (Betty) Buckle announce her passing on Friday, November 28th, 2003 at the O'Connell Centre in her 83rd year. She will be sadly missed by her seven children: Frank (Gillian), Corner Brook, Heather Buckle (Tom McLean), Coburg, ON, Brenda White (Peter Ramsdon), Ottawa, ON, Lena Buckle, Coburg, ON, Peter (Della), Corner Brook, Michael, Ottawa, ON, Grace Earl (Ray), Halifax, NS; 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; four sisters: Brenda, Lena, Joyce and Stella; one brother Stanley Flynleson and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Brendan Buckle in 1965. The funeral service will be held Monday, December 1st at 2:00 p.m. from St. John The Evangelist Anglican Cathedral, Main Street, The Very Reverent Lorne Gosse officiating, followed by the interment at the family plot in the Townsite Cemetery. Friends may visit Fillatre's Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark's Avenue, Saturday from 7-9 and Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or memorial donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation. United in marriage before family and friends were Sonya, daughter of Barry & Louise White and Jeffery, son of Sylvester & Barbara (Bunny) Brosha of Heatherton, Nova Scotia. The wedding party included: Maid of honour, Lindsay White, sister of the bride. Bridesmaids, Gizelle Gaudon, cousin of the bride, Janine & Alyssa Brosha, sisters of the groom. Best man, Andy Brosha, brother of the groom. Groomsmen, Dennis Boyle, Jimmy Hodgson, Corey Brosha, cousins of the groom. Flower girl, McKayla Lauristen, cousin of the bride. Ring bearer, Jamie Boyle, groom's Godson. Many thanks from Jeff and Sonya to everyone for sharing in their special day. The happy couple work and reside in Redding, California.

Verdun & Jean Wells of Corner Brook are pleased to announce the marriage of their youngest daughter Lori Ann to Wayne Michael, son of Wayne & Donna Comeau of Halifax on June 28, 2003 at Emmanual Church, Halifax, Rev. Valerie Rhymes officiating. Cynthia Humber, sister of the bride was matron of honor, Tim Carlton, friend of the groom was best man. Bridesmaids were Dianne Lane, Donna Crocker and Beverly Wells. Groomsmen were Mark Lanthier, Danny Boudreau and Paul Sakins. Flower girls were Francesca and Olivia Rhodes. Ushers were Scott Humber and Keith Wells. Church attendants were: Andrea Humber and Angela Wells. Organist was Skippy Mardon, Soloist was Graham Bowser. A reception followed at Holiday Inn Select, Robie St., Halifax. Reception attendants were Stephanie, Krista and Jason Wells. Lori and Wayne reside in Timberlea, NS.
