Friends of the Family has hundreds of clients who benefited from Gayle's conviction that to be cared for, in the home, by loving workers, who could be trusted as one would a close friend of the family, was the quickest route to recovery or at least peace of mind. Her trailblazing venture set the benchmark for many others to follow in the industry and served as an example for the public sector.
"Gayle, collectively there are things we wish we had said. In your presence, we felt loved. You made us think, feel, imagine. Sometimes you made us sad but mostly, you made us joyful. We will treasure the time we spent with you, and remember how you laughed and cried so easily... sometimes within the same moment. You lived in the present and yet inspired us with the challenges you set for yourself. When your back was against the wall, you became more determined than ever. You rarely quit until, near the end, you said to one of us; I have no regrets. We loved you. We admired you. We will miss you."
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home and Chapel, 467 Sherbourne Street, Toronto, on Tuesday and Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Church (Sherbourne at Earl Street) on Thursday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Gayle's wish was that donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
