It is with absolute sadness that the family of the late Melvyn (Lou) Smith announce his passing, at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital, at the age of 78 years. He leaves to mourn with loving and very valued memories, his wife and partner for over 59 years, Helen or Hud as he called her; daughters Marilyn Hunt (Jim) and Sonya Halfyard (Paul); Paul (Carol) and Jamie "Buck" (Beverly); grandchildren Matthew (Lerae), Shane (Jessica) and Kalli (Danny), Erin and Kale (Stephanie), Ryan and Jessica (Matthew), Kelsi (Lewis), Brittany (Davin) and Samuel; great-grandchildren Benjamin, Ava, Claire, Brantley, Oliver, Emerson, Jaxon, Emalynn, Savannah, Nora, Miles and Aria; sister Peg (Bill); brothers David (Jean), Bruce (Pam), Jerry "Jiggs" (June), Ken (Glenna); sisters-in-law Joyce Bester, Ina Osmond, Avril Brake; brothers-in-law Albert (Lori), Murdock Jr. (Norma), Rick (Dot), Derek (Jackie); and a large circle of nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by his daughter Janice, mother and father Myrtle and Walter Smith, sister Joan, brother Don, niece Linda, parents-in-law Murdock Sr. and Isabelle, brothers-in-law Roy Musseau, Mike Bester, Darius "Dude" Randell and George Brake. As a young boy, he played and pitched for the Humber Hawks baseball club, he built a home/business in Meadows and moved his family from city to rural life. He was the brain and the push behind organized softball and darts for the Northshore (both male and female). As the first president of the Northshore Dev Association he always geared his efforts towards what the people wanted and promoting the majestic North Shore. He ran for MHA of the Bay of Islands, and not only wrote a monthly article for the Western Star but also put his own "argumentative" columns in as well. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, rabbit snaring, cutting firewood, shoveling snow or just sitting and enjoying the view, something he didn't do often. Lou (dad) had a tireless work ethic. He never hesitated to help anyone and would see everything to the end despite his own work or health. He especially loved his family, the kids always had a special place in everything he did. Visitation and Service, for family only, will be held at Country Haven Funeral Home, 167 Country Road, on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 2 pm, with The Very Rev. Baxter Park officiating. A private Interment to follow at Mt. Patricia Cemetery at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Janeway Children's Hospital.
