Passed in: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Passed on: October 4th, 2015

Born in Toronto, October 13, 1929, died peacefully on October 4, 2015 at his residence in Ottawa, at the age of 85 following a prolonged struggle with Alzheimer`s disease. He is survived by his wife and best friend Avis, children Bill (Sheila), Anne (Brett), Robert (Tracy) and John (Alison) and grandchildren Ciara, Ceili, Callum, Matthieu, Mylène, Marlowe and Charlotte. Born and raised in Toronto, Bill attended St. Michael's College, followed by Ryerson in 1950 before settling into a successful career in the R.C.M.P. that would afford him Canadian cultural experiences and memories from coast to coast. Retiring with the rank of Superintendent in 1987, his most rewarding years came between 1973 and 1980 where he served in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, responsible for Western Newfoundland and Labrador. His career trajectory reflected his talent at balancing uncompromising morals, ethics and professionalism with diplomacy, kindness and social ease. His family will proudly remember him as a devoted husband and loving father who, with his wife of nearly 55 years, Avis, provided wisdom and opportunities for their children, and a stable, comfortable home. Fond memories will persist of the pleasant man who knew equally well how to work hard, and take a family vacation; who could be serious, but laugh as hard as the rest of us when he became fodder for the family's humour; who enjoyed solitude in a comfortable chair with a good book as much as he enjoyed leading the family on weekend "adventures," who enjoyed Christmas lights during snow storms; who coined the phrase "fort weather" while animating many bedtime stories to his children; who was the family historian and photographer; and, who became a marathoner in his mid-50s. His grandchildren will all remember being teased that it was their "dodo time," to which they all would learn to garner a chuckle from him by responding, "No, it's your dodo time Grandpa!" The family wishes to thank the staff at the Garry J. Armstrong long-term care facility for their compassionate care of Bill. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer Society (www.alzheimer.ca)

Paul Johnson entered the family business, Johnson Insurance in 1949, which he sold in 1997. The Johnson Family Foundation began in 1987, and created the Grand Concourse Authority in 1994. Even up to his passing on Thanksgiving Day, Mr. Johnson continually showed passion, energy, an unflinching drive for excellence, and absolute determination. Paul Johnson's vision through the Johnson Family Foundation, the Johnson GEO CENTRE, (the only Project bearing his name), the Grand Concourse, and the Railway Coastal Museum, along with his many other contributions to St. John's and to all Newfoundland and Labrador, has left a legacy to be shared and appreciated for generations to come. Many who had the opportunity to work with Paul Johnson will remember his prodigious spirit and unmatched generosity. His preservation of the stories of our past have become a story to be told for years. We have lost a great man and true leader, whose legacy will live on forever. When Paul Johnson was presented to Queen Elizabeth, he was introduced as a philanthropist who had donated millions of dollars, his time and efforts, working to make Newfoundland a better place, Queen Elizabeth asked "Why would you do that", Paul Johnson replied "I am proud to be a Newfoundlander, and I want to help other Newfoundlanders to feel as proud". Paul Johnson was a shy and private person who wished to have no "fan fare", as such, following cremation, a private burial will be held. A celebration of Paul Johnson's life will take place at a later date. Donations in his memory, may be made to the Johnson Family Foundation, 138 Rennies Mill Road, St. John's, NL A1B 2P3, to continue the work of his many ongoing projects.
