I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year,
"Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown."
And he replied,
"Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way."
So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.

MESSERVY, Dr. Diana Temple
Born: June 15th, 1943
Passed on: September 2nd, 2018

After a brief battle with cancer, Diana died at her home in Barachois Brook on Sunday September 2, 2018. She is survived by her longtime partner, Andy Downey and her children Mara Drmaj (and Greg Fisk), Morgan Drmaj (and Cher Hawrysh). Loving sister to Anne Evans, David (and Pat) Messervy. Treasured aunt to David Evans and Janice Clarke, Lisa Kelly and Patty Pardy, Erin and Bryan McDade. Grammie to her adored grandchildren: Grace, Matthew, Colin and Emma. Formerly married to the late Richard "Dick" Drmaj. Beloved niece to Chris Murphy and Lil Butler. She will be missed by her many cousins and friends in Newfoundland and throughout Canada and the U.S. Born on Sandy Point to Morgan and Jean Messervy, Diana's exceptional academic abilities were recognized at an early age. She attended high school at Stephenville Amalgamated and was awarded numerous scholarships on her way to Dalhousie University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours, 1964). She received the Chemistry Gold Medal and Chemical Institute of Canada Key -- only two of the many recognitions in her career. Diana continued with a Master of Science in Chemistry (1965) and a Ph.D. (1969). Although she did not consider herself a pioneer, a woman completing a Ph.D. in Chemistry in the 60s was a remarkable accomplishment. Diana's varied occupations included metalurgist (Inco), entrepreneur (Kiddie Gro Clothes, Diana Temple Fashions) and professor/lecturer (Ryerson Polytechnical University, the College of the North Atlantic and New Brunswick Community College). Through her love of teaching, Diana -- affectionately known as "Doc" -- inspired a great many students, who loved and respected her. After almost three decades in the classroom, she will be sorely missed by both her students and her many wonderful colleagues who became dear friends. Diana is also remembered for her environmental activist work in ensuring safe drinking water in her local community and for the successful end of fracking in Port aux Port Bay. Diana's family will receive visitors on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 1:00 PM at All Saints Anglican Church, Main Street Stephenville Crossing followed by funeral service at 2:00 PM. In her teens, Emily left Old Shop, Trinity Bay and moved to Corner Brook. She thoroughly enjoyed working at the hospital and always said that she would have loved to be a nurse. It wasn't long before her high-school sweetheart, Cyril, followed her and shortly after, they were married. Between them they created a happy and loving household for their 4 boys. Emily, probably a bit ahead of her time, took charge of the family finances and made sure everything ran shipshape, was spic and span, and that no one did without. As anyone can tell you, Emily was happiest when her loved ones were gathered around her table enjoying food that she had prepared. Everyone was made welcome in her home. Although she could turn her hand to most anything, she was truly a fantastic baker and cook... but it has to be said that her pies were simply second to none. For all their married life, Emily and Cyril looked forward to going camping. Emily would have everything packed in the trailer so they could take off as soon as Cyril got home from work. In the early years, they piled into a tent with the boys but eventually they moved up to the comfort of a travel trailer. Once the boys grew up, they found the perfect spot at Father Kelly's Pit. They loved their 40+ years there with friends, new and old. Many a time we heard that "Mom and Dad were headed up to Birchy." They spent many days boating across the lake, fishing, picking berries and having boil ups with friends. Those were happy times for sure. In later years, they also became members of the Pasadena Seniors club, where Emily was known to shoot more than a few "bulls." They loved the fun, the pot lucks and the camaraderie this group offered. Emily had a genuine spark for life, with an infectious laugh. She loved a good joke told around the campfire. Emily strived to live a good life, as the Lord would have wanted, and was kind to all. She was a long-time member of the Salvation Army Home League Ladies and was faithful to the beliefs of her church. A gracious lady, Emily will be deeply missed by her loving husband Cyril, her children and their families, as well as all who knew her. Tim McGraw recently wrote a song called "Humble and Kind." The words are very much how Emily lived her life:
Hold the door, say please, say thank-you
Don't steal, don't cheat, and don't lie
I know you got mountains to climb but
Always stay humble and kind
.
