George Long Term Care Centre, Stephenville Crossing on Wednesday,
September 10, 2008 at the age of 83 years. She will be

two great grandchildren: Emma and Alex, sisters-in-law, Flora Joy of
St. John’s, Maureen Moore of Knoxville, Tennessee, Sandra Abbott
of Stephenville and a large circle of relatives and friends. She was
predeceased by her husband, Fintan Abbott, three brothers: Dr. Clifton
Joy, Gus Joy, James Joy, three sisters: Dorothy Madison, Mildred O’Donnell,
Geraldine Southcott and her dearly beloved son-in-law, Robert Dwyer.
Visitation was held at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Port au Port West on
Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Friday,
September 12th at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Port au Port
West with cremation to follow. A private family interment will take place
at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted
or donations to Our Lady of Mercy Church Restoration Fund would be greatly

well numerous cousins magnetized by his personality and ongoing concern
for life. Edward was predeceased by his mother Mabel Loretta Andrews,

With much sadness we announce that Dr. John Ashton died quietly at home
with his family by his side on Saturday September 20, 2008. He will be
loved as long as we live: His wife, Sheila, his son Darby, his parents
John and Dorothy Ashton, his siblings: Chris (Elaine), Ray (Susan), Terry
(Angela), Kathleen (Jamal), Philip (Leslie), Maria (Tim), Martin (Siobhan)
and his siblings-in-law: Richard (Nancy), Kevin (Lorrie), Frank (Lil),
Barry (Heather), Dean, Colleen (Barry), Anne (Glenn), Chris (Kim) and
Jason (Andrea) and father-in-law Allan (Margaret) Saunders. He will be
missed by a loving circle of nieces and nephews, other relatives and
numerous friends across Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Ireland and
the United Kingdom. John was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England on
October 7, 1952. He came to study at Memorial University in 1975 and
chose to make Newfoundland his home. John was not only a pivotal figure
in the evolution of Grenfell College towards maturity, but an internationally
recognized prize-winning scholar in his chosen field of Folklore. Visitation
will take place at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s
Avenue on Monday and Tuesday from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 pm. The
funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday September 24 at
the Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer. Reception to follow at Sir Wilfred
Grenfell College at 1:45pm in the Atrium of the Fine Arts Building. In

at Upper Ferry she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (nee Delaney)
MacIsaac. She was predeceased by her husband William in 1970. Daughter
Joan in 1999, and her infant son Michael. She leaves to mourn with loving
memories, her seven sons; Gordon (Doreen), Joe (Ruby), Ron (Shirley),
Kevin (Jane), Lennie (Dianne), Frank (Sheila), and Mike (France). Two
daughters; Dianne (Randy) Walsh, and Sister Verna AuCoin. Thirty-two
grandchildren, and thirty-nine great grandchildren. Sisters-in-law; Mary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mabel Colbourne announce her passing at the O’Connell Center in Corner Brook
on September 4, 2008 at the age of 96. Mabel retired after many years
in the teaching profession. Predeceased by her parents, Frank and Julia
Brown, her husband, Bram, brothers Wesley and Allen and sister Pearl
Budden. Left with fond and loving memories are her two daughters: Roma
Madge Colbourne of Steady Brook and Pearl Grant, also of Steady Brook.
Also leaving to mourn brother, Bennett Brown (Mildred) of Mount Pearl;
grandsons: Todd (Amanda), Greg (Jennifer), Scott (Leanne) and great
granddaughter Olivia; sisters-in-law: Pearl Brown, Maggie Colbourne,

September 19, 2008 at the age of 81. She will be sadly missed by her seven daughters,

(Warren) Carter, Paris, ON, Pauline (Blaine) Perrier, Oakville, ON, Camilla
Hanlon, Georgetown, ON, Charmaine Hanlon, Mississauga and Jacinta Hanlon
(David) of Edmonton, Alberta. Four sons, Steve (Myra) Hanlon of Stephenville,
Walter (Ruby) Hanlon, Luke (Cecille) Hanlon, and Jerome Hanlon all of
Brampton, ON, as well as 29 grandchildren and 17 great grand children
as well as a large circle of family and friends. She was predeceased
by her husband Walter and two sons Eugene and Robert as well as her parents
Luke and Angela Neville, two sisters Bride Alexander, Anne Formanger
and two brothers Tom Neville and Pat Neville. Visitation will take place

Passed peacefully at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander on September
5, 2008. Predeceased by parents Gilbert and Mary Jane, sisters Mamie
and Lizzie (Normore), brother Eliol, niece Anita Chipman and great niece
Sandy Hunter. Leaving to mourn sister Lily Hunter, St. John’s;
brother Fred (Mary) and sister-in-law Evelyn, Salvage; nieces: Sandra
Hardy, St. John’s, Juanita Sheppard, Edmonton, Phyllis (Dave) Janes,
CBS, Bernice (Tom) Hallett, Eastport; nephews: Rex (Dorothy) Hunter,
CBS, Gilbert (Judy) Heffern, Brooklin, ON; along with great and great-great
nieces and nephews who all had a special place in her heart. Barbara
was born at Wild Cove (Salvage), the youngest of a family of six, and
obtained her Grade 11 diploma in just nine years from St. Stephens School
in Salvage. She taught school in nine communities throughout the province
prior to joining the staff of Holy Trinity Central High in Normans Cove
in 1964 where she remained for 18 years, the last 11 as Vice Principal.
Upon retirement in 1983 she returned to Salvage to run her general store
and play an active community role as Mayor, Lay Reader and a member of
the EastPen Players and the Eastport Peninsula Heritage Society. Funeral
services were held at St. Stephen’s Church, Salvage, on September
7, 2008 with interment at St. Stephen’s Anglican Cemetery. Her
family would like to thank Bishop Edward Marsh, Reverend Paul Thoms,
JPMS staff, Squire’s Funeral Home, St Stephen’s and Holy
Cross (Eastport) Church Choirs, St. Stephen’s ACW, Marjorie Hiscock

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Walter Jacob
Rice announce his passing at the O'Connell Centre in Corner
Brook, on Thursday,
September 11th 2008 at the age of 89 years. Walter
was born in Bear Cove, on July 4th 1919 to Hezikiah & Lucy
Rice. As a young man he met and married Gladys Pearl Eveleigh. They were
married for 37 Years and raised six children. He was known as a hard
worker as a lumberjack in the woods, and also worked with the Department
of Transportation. He had a great passion for the button accordian and
a great love for his family dearly and also a love for dogs. This talents
was also passed on to his children. Left with fond and loving memories;
sons: Donald (Beverly), Edwin (Glenice), Norman Jr. (Shirley), Bert (Louise)
and his twin daughters; Viola (Gerald Parsons) and Vera (Garland Rice).
His grandchildren; Glynis, Curtis, Robert, Rhonda, Larry, Cory, Krissy,
Bobby, Andrew, Aaron, Adam, Alex, Amanda, Blair, Jody, Julia, and Joey.
His 14 great grandchildren. His brother: Kenneth (Elizabeth) and sister:
Cynthia Lockyer both of Springdale. He also leaves to mourn a large circle

SOLO, David Joseph
It is with great sadness that the family of the late David Solo announce
his passing in Toronto, on September 12, 2008. Leaving to mourn with
fond and loving memories his wife Gladys; daughters: Marina (Ray),
Janet (Bert), Tina (predeceased Michael), Judy (Arthur), Cathy (Steve),
Caroline (Joe), Dorothy, stepdaughter Patricia (Leroy). David leaves
behind many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and one sister Madeline
Solo of Corner Brook. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and
Agnes Solo, brothers: Hhsan, Austin, Peter and sisters: Mary and Patricia.
Cremation has taken place with his ashes going home to Newfoundland.

Cherished grandmother of Rick Reese (Ginger), Shari (Bobbie Wheeler),
Eric Jones, Diana (Gary Harger), Jayson Elam (Vicki), Dennie Elam (Laura),
Belinda (Stephen Pishner), Tommy, Troy, Timmy, Todd, Ian Hull (Crystal),

Gowing, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Mary will also be sadly missed by her brothers, sisters, many extended
