TODE, Ingrid Wera
Nov 11, 1909 - Sept 12, 2007
Passed peacefully away on Wednesday, September 12th, at The Salvation
Army Glenbrook Lodge in St. John’s, Ingrid (Grohsgal) Tode, two
months before her 98th birthday. Predeceased in 1974 by her husband,
Hans Juergen Tode. Also predeceased by her seven sisters and one brother,
who were all older and spread in various parts of the world. Ingrid’s
full and satisfying life is celebrated with great love, respect and admiration
by her son, Wolf Dieter Tode (Nadine) in London, Ontario, and her daughter,
Heddy Margarete (William J. Peddle) in St. John’s. Also remembered
fondly by the grandchildren she loved dearly and influenced more than
she knew: Cedella E. Beazley (Scott) in Minneapolis, MN; M. Ingrid Brodie
in Coldbrook, N.S.; Adelle Tode (Michael O’Connell) in Calgary;
Kristine Griba in Calgary; Stephen W. Peddle (Kimberley J. Blanchard)
in St. John’s; and by her great-grandchildren: Jackson and Hannah
Beazley; Olivia Colwell; Nicholas and Harrison Griba; Joshua and Luke
Peddle; Brianna and Keira O’Connell. Also leaving to mourn two
nephews, Klaus Staeben (Rosemary) in Milltown, and Bernd Staeben (Rochelle)
in Corner Brook, and their families; one grand-nephew, Bruce Grohsgal
and family, in Wilmington, DE. Ingrid and Hans emigrated from Germany
in 1951 to Corner Brook, Newfoundland, where they built a new home and
enjoyed a very active and happy life with a treasured circle of new friends,
especially with the Corner Brook Playmakers. Following Hans’ passing
in 1974, Ingrid moved to St. John’s to be closer to her children,
and developed yet another active and productive life and circle of friends.
In 1977 she became a founding member of the St. John’s Guild of
Embroiderers, who made her an Honorary Life Member as a result of her
many contributions. It will not surprise any of her friends that, as
pragmatic as ever and with a good sense of humour, Ingrid made all her
own arrangements while she was still hale and hearty, and before dementia
gradually robbed her of her wonderful personality in the late-1990s.
Her last thirteen years were spent at Glenbrook Lodge in great comfort
and peace, and the extraordinary attention and care she received from
everyone at Glenbrook will always be remembered by her family with warm
gratitude. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation
at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s,
on September 20, Thursday, 7 to 9 pm. Memorial service at Carnell’s
on September 21, Friday, at 11:00 am, followed by a reception. Inurnment
in Corner Brook will be announced in the Western Star later this year.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ingrid’s name to The
Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge, 105 Torbay Road, St. John’s, NL
A1A 2G9. To send a message of condolence or to sign the memorial guest
book, please visit www.carnells.com
VEITCH, Gertrude (nee MADORE)
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gertrude
(Madore) Veitch of Brandon, MB on Sunday, September
9, 2007. Gertrude
was born on July 6, 1916 in St. George’s, NL. Shortly after her
mother’s death in 1918, Gertrude moved to Buchans, NL, where
she met the love of her life, Philip Veitch and they were married in
November 1937. Gertrude was a devoted wife and mother to her three
children. Following Philip’s death in 1954, she took on the role
of both parents, in a time where single parenthood was difficult. Her
sons supported the family for many years and enabled her to experience
the joy of helping raise her grandchildren. In 1984, Gertrude decided
to make a permanent move to Manitoba to live with her daughter and
family. For 23 years, Gertrude played an important role in the Simms
family’s life. Her love and support was very evident and she
was very proud of all her grandchildren’s successes. Children
brought her much joy and she was always happy to hear stories about
her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gertrude was known as ‘Nan’ to
all her grandchildren, and over the years she became affectionately
known as ‘Nan’ to all family friends. Nan loved sharing
a good laugh with family and friends and visitors always brightened
up her day. She is survived by her children: Charlie Veitch (Vicki
Lynch), John (Lori) Veitch, Mary Lou (Ray) Simms and sister-in-law,
Sr. Mary Celine Veitch and Mary Madore. She is also survived by her
grandchildren: Philip (Joan) Veitch, Charles Veitch, Brent (Kelly)
Veitch, Craig (Jennifer) Veitch, Allison (Michael) Isenberg and Leann
Simms (Chris McCannel) and six great-grandchildren: Brian, Graham,
Noah, Adam, Hailey and Maria Veitch. She is predeceased by her husband,
Philip; father, Bill and mother, Mary Madore; step-mother, Agnes Madore;
daughter-in-law, Libby Anderson; granddaughter, Lisa Veitch; brothers:
Doug and Gordon Madore; and sisters: Ada Chaytor and Beatrice Landers.
Funeral services were held at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church
on Thursday, September 13, 2007. Pallbearers were Michael Isenberg,
Chris McCannel, Bill Simms, Al Kozakowski, Ron Kozakowski and Jim Ritchie.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Kidney Foundation.
