SHEARS, Catherine (nee Humber)
Rocky Harbour, NL
February 4th, 1919 - August 30th, 2006

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Catherine Shears (nee Humber) announce her sudden passing at the Bonne Bay Health Centre on Wednesday, August 30th, 2006 in her 87th year. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories: son Willis whom resides at the Bonne Bay Health Centre; three daughters: Marion (George) of Rocky Harbour, Elaine (Willy) of Ontario and Sue (Morris) of Calgary, daughter-in-law Frances (Tom) of Deer Lake; grandchildren: Frank, Penny, Bobby, Pam, Bryant, Sharon, Clem, Dennis, Dwayne and her 15 great grandchildren; also a large circle of nieces, nephews, and friends; her sisters-in-law Lorean Humber and Violet Shears; also her many good friends at the Dove Complex in Norris Point where she resided. Catherine was predeceased by her husband Clark, September 2004, her son Bryant, granddaughters Cathy Shears, Baby Girl Shears and Cindy Watts. The family will be receiving family and friends this evening, Thursday, August 31st, 2006 from 7-9 p.m. and on Friday, September 1st, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. from St. Matthews Anglican Church in Rocky Harbour, from where the funeral service will take place from on Saturday, September 2nd, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. John Olsson and Rev. Beverley Snow officiating with the interment to follow at the church cemetery in Rocky Harbour. Flowers graciously accepted or donations may be made to the St. Matthews Anglican Church Memorial Fund. The funeral arrangements are under the direction of Parsons Funeral Home, 63 North Main Street, Deer Lake, NL.

She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her children: Dora (Bert) Reid, Norris Point; Clarence (Ann) Knott, Norris Point; Joyce (Edgar) Upwards, Shoal Brook; Joan (Norman) Perham, Corner Brook; Linda Marshall, Glovertown; Gladys (Bryce) Butler, Corner Brook; daughter-in-law Bertha Knott, Norris Point. Grandchildren: Keith, Donna, Dionne, Gale, Darrell, David, Sharon, Fay, Boyd, Craig, Brenda, Dexter, Kimberly, Shawn, Tara, Monty, Paula, Robert, Scott, Deana, Bonnie, Corey. 34 great-grandchildren & 4 great-great-grandchildren. T. Patricia Thomas
of Halifax and formerly of Mabou, NS and St. Anthony, NL, passed away Aug. 31 at Parkstone Extended Care Facility at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Gordon W. Thomas, long-time Executive Director and Surgeon in Chief of the International Grenfell Association. She will be sadly missed by her sister Ruth Denton of Costa Rica and children Patricia (David) Simpson of Potomac MD; Leonard (Margaret) Thomas of Corner Brook and Pamela (Perry) Colbourne of Halifax; grandchildren Timothy, Scott and John Simpson, Jane Gray, Krista Bezanson, Patti and Rob Thomas, Daniel and Sue Colbourne and great-grandchildren Meghan and William Simpson, Thomas Bezanson and Rex MacDonald. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Randolph Pittman announce his passing on Friday, September 1, 2006 after his lengthy illness. He now rests with God and his son Bruce who preceded him. Passed peacefully away, surrounded by his family, David Gillard of Pasadena on Friday, September 1, 2006 following a courageous battle with cancer. He will be sadly missed with a life time of memories. Left to celebrate his life are his wife of 38 years, Elizabeth W. (Bishop), his only son, Adam J., mother, Bessie Aurilla (Payne) of Orillia, ON; sister, Myrna (Klause) Reibling, of Moncton, NB; brothers: Jack A. (Nancy M. Taylor) of Orillia, ON, Wayne L of Lark Harbour, and Kenneth of Orangeville, ON; sisters-in-law: Greta Gillard of St. Judes, Patheresa McLeod of Alberta, Ellen (Jim) Morris of Appleton, NL, Geraldine (Harris) Foote of Fox Creek, Alberta, Michelle (Carol) Clarke II of Victoria, NL; brothers-in-law: Kevin (Venah Stacey) Bishop and Terry Bishop of Alberta; and a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many good friends and co-workers at Western Memorial Regional Hospital where he was still employed. He was predeceased by his father Augustus J. Gillard of Corner Brook, brother, Gary J. of St. Judes and parents-in-law, Thomas J. and Irene W. (Fahey) Bishop of Pasadena. Dave was passionate about his family, reading and social justice. He dreamed the impossible dream and inspired others to do the same. David's earthly remains were cremated and a memorial mass and interment will take place at a later date. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Audrey, four daughters: Janet (Greg) Shang in Mississauga, ON, Juanita Duffenais in Lourdes, Jocelyn Duffenais (Bertram) in Kippens, Eileen (Darren) Paul in Woodbridge, ON, one brother Joe (Alberta) Duffenais in Chester Basin, Nova Scotia, four sisters: Rona (Jimmy) Wayne in Michigan, Carrie and Ivy (Joe) Watson, both in Texas and Madonna (Fred) Caven in Petrol, ON. Also leaving to mourn are his four grandchildren: Kelly, Ashley, Devin and Kyle and a large circle of relatives and friends. Passed from the loving arms of her family on Monday, September 4, 2006, into those of her husband, Frank, Florizel (Flossie) Ledrew in her 97th year. Always cherished and never forgotten by her six children: Shirley Joan Sweetland (Fred), David Barry LeDrew (Betty-Lou), Stewart Boyd LeDrew (Joan), Brenda LeDrew Keyes (Vince), Deborah Francis LeDrew (Frank Balogh) and Terry Denise LeDrew, with whom she lived, and special daughter Deirdre O`Leary (Danny); grandchildren: Chris, Jane, Ann, Barry, Robert, Jane, Nancy, Vicky, Stephen Jonathan Tree, Frank, Lisa, Susan, Scott, Nicole, Michelle, Peter, Kip, Rachael, Brock, Cindy, Karen, Stephen, Sheila and Richard; great-grandchildren: Erin, Amy, Zachary, Joshua and Nathan, Adam and Andrea, Courtney, Jason, Nicole, Jessie, Jade, Caleb, Mandy, Jessica, Peter, David, Leslie-Ann, Sarah, Heather, Rebecca, Kirsten, Erika, Andrew, Heather, Scott, Shannon, Diane, Sarah, Amy J, Mathieu, Alexandre, Jacinta, Danica, Jacob, Nickolas, Skyler, Evan and Ava Luna; very special companions, Geraldine Carter Coffin and Noreen Warren, as well, left with warm memories of Aunt Floss, the Babstock and Eales children and the extended LeDrew family. Predeceased by parents, Patrick and Elsie (Power) McCormack; sisters Mary Bertelson and Kathleen McCormack; brothers John, George and Charles McCormack. Leaving to mourn her Religious Congregation the Sisters of Mercy; her sisters, Helen Nolan, Margaret Furey, Patricia (Gerald) David and sister-in-law Margaret McCormack; her nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and many friends. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Randolph Pittman announce his passing on Friday, September 1, 2006 after his lengthy illness. He now rests with God and his son Bruce who preceded him. He was also predeceased by parents Ruth (nee Rice) and Archibald Pittman, sisters: Gladys Combdon and Stella Jacobs. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Daisy (nee Combdon), his daughter Betty (Rowe), his brother Lester Pittman, his grandchildren Roxanne (Pittman), Jeremy (Pittman), Michael (Rowe), Stephanie (Rowe), daughter-in-law Valerie (Pittman), special niece Sheila (Don Browning), special sister-in-law Poppie (Connolly) and a large circle of family and friends. He was laid to rest in the Anglican cemetery of the church of the transfiguration at Sop's Arm, White Bay with the Reverend William Ranson and Reverend Roberta Woodman officiating. Passed away peacefully, lovingly surrounded by his wife, Kay and family in the early morning hours of September 2nd, at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook at the age of 90 years. Predeceased by his first wife Barbara Whalen, his daughter Heather Irene, his mother Suzannah Cooper, his brothers Garfield, Sam and Jack as well as sisters Ruby and Maisie. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are: his wife, Kay and his children: Betty, Anna and Roy (Yvonne), his stepchildren: Jerry, Judy, Brenda, John, Cavelle, Joanne and their families; his eight grandchildren: Gordon, Ken, Keith, Shawn, Cathy, Heather, Nikki and Shannon and his seven great grandchildren: Jonathan, Aimee, Kristopher, Nicholas, Alexandra, Alexander and Victoria, his brother Neil Cooper and many other relatives and friends from both sides of the Atlantic. Roy was a WW2 Veteran who served with the Royal Navy for 6.5 years as an ASDIC operator and participated in the battle of the Atlantic. He proudly represented his country during many celebrations in Canada and overseas during the last 60 years as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3. He was a long time employee retired from the Bowater Plant in Deer Lake. Roy was a very proud Newfoundland and was a passionate advocate for the preservation of the history of the Humber Valley and was one of the founders of the Roy Whalen Heritage Museum and Archives. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parsons Funeral Home. The funeral services were held at the Salvation Army Citadel in Deer Lake, 2 pm on Monday September 4th. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Roy Whalen Heritage Centre and Archives.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter June Foley, Stephenville Crossing; grandson Brian Foley, Dartmouth, NS; great-grandchildren: Shauna and Brycen; several nieces and nephews and one very special niece, Elaine McIsaac, Stephenville Crossing. She will also be missed by a large number of friends, relatives and her “other family” at the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre. Brothers, 6 children: Joan Lewis (Don), Corner Brook; Maxine Lewis (Barry), Corner Brook; Bill (Aggie), Red Deer, Alb.; Annette Curson (Fred), Ottawa, Ont.; Glen (Marina), Halfway Point; Cherie Brothers, Calgary, Alb. 9 precious grandchildren: Courtney Lewis, Jonathan, Jeffrey & Jason Lewis, Kayla & Alicia Brothers, Lucas Curson, Brianna & Braeden Brothers. Mary will be sadly missed by William's brothers and sisters and their families. The happy couple reside in North Vancouver where Kenny is a Professor at Douglas College and Andrea is a Teacher at Cypress Park Primary School.

Passed away peacefully, lovingly surrounded by her husband, George; son, Tony and daughter, Carole in the early morning hours of September 12th, on the Palliative Care Unit at Western Memorial Regional Hospital, at the age of 78 years. Predeceased by her brother Rev. Guy Case. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are: her husband of 57 years, George; her children, Tony (Pauline), Massey Drive and Carole Felix (Ted), Kingston, ON; her precious grandson, Oliver, Massey Drive; her sister, Nellie Shears, Stephenville Crossing; sisters-in-law, Elsa Carpenter and Christina Sweetapple, both of Corner Brook; brothers-in-law, Neil (Lillian), St. John's and Leonard Holloway, Corner Brook, and many other family and friends. Joyce haled from Perry's Cove, Conception Bay. She attended Memorial University of Newfoundland. In 1947, she moved to Humbermouth to teach. It was here that she met and married her husband, George, in 1949. They moved to Port aux Basques in 1968, and returned to Corner Brook in 1980. It is with deep sadness that the family of Bill Keating of Ottawa, Ontario, announce his passing on September 16, 2006, at the age of 56. He leaves behind, with precious memories, his loving wife and caregiver for the past 14 months, Donna (Messervey), his daughter Trinda (Mark de Grandpre) and his son Bill Jr. (Jennifer Bond). He also leaves the light in his life for the past year, his precious granddaughter, Mya Grace de Grandpre. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Rita Keating of Stephenville, Newfoundland, his four brothers, Colin (Iona) and Rick of Edmonton, Alberta, Glen of Ottawa, Ontario, and Ken (Melinda Jesso) of Stephenville, his three sisters, Julia (Gordon Keating-Brown) of Ottawa, Ontario, Terri (Rosaire Côté) of Stephenville, and Glenda (Larry Hann) of St. John's, Newfoundland. He is fondly remembered by his two sisters-in-law Sandra (William) Caines of Toronto and Trinda Messervey of New Westminster, BC. He leaves behind uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends throughout Canada, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. He is especially remembered by his friends from "The Band" Sonny Wood, Wayne Russell, and Tom Doyle. In his 56 years, Bill did more than most of us dream of in a lifetime. His professional life in the telecommunications field took him from various parts of Newfoundland to Ottawa and on to Saudi Arabia. During his stay in Saudi Arabia he fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a master scuba diver and went on to become licensed as a Scuba Diver Instructor. This designation allowed him to train several groups of divers in the Middle East including United States Marines. This new skill was something Bill was extremely proud of and he had hoped to continue this type of work upon his retirement. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Edmond Donald Pittman announce his passing on Sunday in Sops Arm in his 69th year. He will be sadly missed by his daughter Sybil (Baxter); son Eric; sister Annie Pollard; brothers: Andrew (Lucy), Norman (Myrtle), Ephriam (Joan); aunt Margaret Pittman; sister-in-law Beulah, Ontario; also a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Mary, his parents Charles and Tamar Pittman, and his brother Garland. Visitation will take place today, Tuesday and Wednesday from the Anglican Church in Sops Arm from where funeral services will take place on Thursday, September 28th at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Roberta Woodman officiating. Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery in Jacksons Arm. By request of the family, flowers graciously accepted or donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. It is with great sadness that the family of the late George Spence announce his passing on Monday, September 25th, 2006 at his family residence in Deer Lake at the age of 82 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his children: Robin (Valerie) Spence, Danny (Myra) Spence, Anne (Tom) Yetman and Molly Spence. Grandchildren: Stephen (Nadine), Matthew, Sarah, Danielle, Kenneth, Nicholas, Shane, Joshua, Jacob, Dustin and great grandson Zachary. Brothers-in-law: Scott (Daisy) Campbell, Roy (Mona) Campbell, Ken Campbell Jr. and John Shiner. Sisters-in-law: Hazel Manuel, Molly Nichols, Daisy “Lover” (Tom) Laramore, Renne (Harvey) Caines and Shirley (Eric) Luther. Nephews: Bill (Irene) Ball and Randy (Nora) Ball, cousin Calvin Wheeler (Joy). As well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Betty Spence, children Catherine and Kenneth Spence, parents Wilfred (Bill) and Dora Spence, sister Annie Ball and brother-in-law Otto Ball, father and mother-in-law Kenneth and Ada Campbell. Special thanks to George's exceptional care givers in his time of illness. Friends may visit Fillatre's Funeral Home, 10 Clinic Drive, Deer Lake on Wednesday from the hours of 7-9 PM and on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Richard Parsons announces his passing at the O'Connell Centre on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at the age of 88 years.  He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, his wife of 60 years, Gwendolyn; son:  Calvin (Wanda); grandchildren:  Penny Wells (Michael) and Peter Parsons (Cheryl); great grandchild:  Melanie Wells; sisters:  Verdie Harris, Ettie Stratton (Gerald), Doreen Anderson, Mona Piercey, Dorothy (Dot) Christopher; sister-in-law:  Doris Parsons; brothers-in-law:  Roland Brake (Molly), Raymond Brake (Mercedes), and George Brake (Averil); sisters-in-law:  Maxine House, Mona Davis (Owen) and Frances Hann (Bertram Jr.); the mother of his grandchildren, Lydia O'Quinn (Larry) and a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  He was predeceased by his infant son, Eric (1949); father and mother, Samuel and Julia Parsons; brother, Gilbert; adopted brother, Cyril Parsons; sister, Mary Jane; and brothers-in-law:  Gordon Piercey, Reg Anderson, Raymond Christopher and Chesley Harris.  Visitation will take place at the Anglican Church, Summerside on Thursday, September 28, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. from where the funeral service will be held on Friday, September 29, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Lionel was predeceased by his 2 grandchildren. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Ephraim Randell announce his passing on Thursday, September 28th, 2006 at his family residence in his 76th year. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Sophia (nee Jacobs); his children: Juanita (Allan), Guy (Jeanette), Kevin (Bonnie), Minnie (Brian), Perry (Jeanette), Donna (Dan), Curtis (Natalie), Brent (Chantel) and Jason (Liliane); fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters: Gladys and Maude (Prescott); four brothers: Kenneth (Elsie), Arthur (Cora), Joe (Ruby) and Darius (Ina). Also a large circle of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his sons: Roland, Ephraim, Roger, parents Harry and Minnie and sister Emily. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Freda of 62 years and by his 16 children: Seymour (Iris), Irene (Clarence Shears), Lizzie Reid (Tom Payne), Gerald (Rowena), Morris (Angela), Joyce (Gerald Hancock), Iris (Eric Layden), Ben (Bev), Nancy Reid (Howard Neil), Joan (Albert Marshall), David (Susan Reid), Leona (Monty Reid), Daniel (Leah Bennett), Neila (Forward Bennett), Dempcy (Wendy Young), Julia (Craig Major); 54 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren. Also leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories: his sisters-in-law Liz Hutchings (Bert Gilley), Winnie Hutchings; brothers-in-law Fred (Rachel) Hutchings and Gordon (Daphene) Hutchings, also with a large circle of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his 3 children Thomas, Gerald, and Luella; parents Thomas & Elizabeth Gilley; mother and father-in-law Seymour and Miriah Hutchings; brother-in-law Frailen Hutchings, sons-in-law Ernest and Alex Reid; six brothers and four sisters. He will be laid to rest at the Church of the Good Shepherd where visitation took place Thursday and Friday and the funeral service will take place today, Saturday, September 30th at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. A resident of Chatham, Eugene (Gene) Wiseman passed away at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Chatham on Thursday, September 28, 2006 at the age of 67. Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, son of the late John W. and Emma (Darrigan) Wiseman. Beloved husband of Marie (Pilgrim) Wiseman for 38 years. Loving father of Perry and Rochelle Wiseman of Chatham, Susan Steel of Chatham, and Jeremy and Shannon Wiseman of Sarnia. Grand-dad of Noah, Emma, and Lucas Wiseman, Alexander Steel, and Ava Wiseman. Brother of Gerald and Dennie Wiseman of Alberta, Frances and Bill Prowse of Newfoundland, Anne Birmingham of Newfoundland, Marie and Tom Collier of Newfoundland, Carmel Cowan of Nova Scotia, Joe and Olga Wiseman of Newfoundland, John and Judy Wiseman of Chatham, Madonna and Ken King of Newfoundland, Louise and Ron Birmingham of Newfoundland, Michael Wiseman of Wawa, Gerard and Kathy Wiseman of Chatham, and the late Samuel Wiseman. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Brenda Kaye LeDet (BJ) announce her passing on Wednesday, September 27th, 2006. Sadly missed by her mother Mary Anderson and her special friend Dorothy Chenenery. Three sisters Colleen (Dave) Suley, Delores (Ray) Pitcher, Lori (Albert) Brake, one brother Terry Anderson, aunt Vera and uncle Mike Creber, Brenda's family in Louisiana, the Chenenery family and Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Chenevert, Ina (Nelson) LaBorde. Brenda was predeceased by her father John Anderson and her grandparents John and Blanche Meade, her aunts Rita Porter, Violet Baldwin, Jack Meade, and Meschack Meade. Also a large circle of relatives, cousins, nieces and nephews. She will be laid to rest in Pineville, Louisiana.
