DEATHS

BELL, Roderick Alexander
Corner Brook, Newfoundland
Sept. 26th, 1934 - September 4th, 2005

The family of Roderick Alexander Bell of Corner Brook, Newfoundland, are deeply saddened to announce that he passed away on Sunday, September 04, 2005 at the age of 70 years. He died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at the palliative care unit of Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, after a lengthy illness. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by many, including his wife, Violet (nee Jennings), sons Brian, Corner Brook, Ian (Abby Hynes), Corner Brook, and Alan (Karen Hiscock), Ottawa, Ontario, daughter Kathy (Brent) Anstey, Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, brother William, Corner Brook, sisters Alice (Bill) Bezanson, Berwick, Nova Scotia, and Florence, Cambridge, Ontario, his eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Connolly, Ottawa, Ontario. As well, he will be remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and other relatives, the numerous friends and neighbours he has had over the years, and by his cousins back in Scotland, with whom he kept in touch, and to whom he was affectionately known as Der. While Rod was a long-time resident of the city of Corner Brook, which he was truly pleased to call his home, he was actually born in Blairgowrie, Scotland, to the late Michael and Catherine Bell. He moved to Newfoundland at the age of eleven in 1946, after his father was hired by Sir Eric Bowater to establish and manage Hammond Farm in Little Rapids. He and his family lived on the farm, where he worked as a farm hand in the summers and became known as Buster. He graduated from Corner Brook Public School in 1952, after which he attended Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, and was then employed by Bell Canada in Toronto as a telephone technician. Eventually, he returned to Newfoundland and worked in the electrical department at the Bowater's Pulp and Paper Mill in Corner Brook. In 1959 he and Violet married, and he decided to return to university. At the same time, they started their family, meaning he had to halt his studies periodically to earn enough money to continue. In 1965 he received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from the Nova Scotia Technical College in Halifax. He and Violet then returned to Corner Brook, where he worked as an electrical engineer at the paper mill until he retired in 1991. Over the years, along with spending time with his family, he especially cherished the time he spent at his cottage on the Humber River. The river valley, where he grew up, was always very special to him, and he often commented about what a wonderful place it was to live.

Friends may visit Fillatre's Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark's Avenue, Corner Brook on Tuesday from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
