It is with great sadness that the family of the late Harold Chesley Childs announce his sudden passing on Monday, September 1st, 2003 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in his 80th year. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 56 years Mary; son Garland & wife Jeanie; daughters: Suzanne Childs (Howard) and Rosalyn Sheppard (Rendell); foster daughter Heather Traverse (Rick) all residing in Lark Harbour; 10 grandchildren: Steven, Jeffrey, Ryan, Johnny, Melanie, Dennis, Dale, Trina, Richard and Regie; 6 great-grandchildren: Kirkland, Dayna, Denise, Craig, Dawson and Mia; 2 brothers: Ronald (Mamie), Lark Harbour, Soloman (Marie), Yarmouth, NS; brothers-in-law: Roland Sheppard, Kenneth Druggett; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents George and Clara Childs; sisters: Ruby, Elsie, Bessie and Mary; brothers: Bill and Herbert. The funeral service will be held Thursday, September 4th at 2:00 p.m. from St. James Anglican Church, Lark Harbour, Reverend Joyce Payne officiating followed by the interment at the Church Cemetery. SEAR, Frances Maud
Peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, September 1st, 2003 at the age of 71 years, after a courageous battle with kidney failure. Beloved wife and best friend of Dave Sear. Deeply loved and missed by her daughter Cathy (Brent Robitaille) and her 9 week old granddaughter Katelyn Frances. Lovingly remembered by sisters Phyllis Burgher, Norma (Ronald Sturge) and by her brother Kevin (Laura Penney). Predeceased by her brother Gerald Penney. Frances will be fondly remembered by her nieces Janice Schryver, Jackie (Carl Nattrass), Pauline (Joe Laidman), Karen (Ric Van de Keift), Christine Penney and her nephew David Sturge as well by many friends. A memorial service will be held at Orleans United Church, 1111 Orleans Blvd., Orleans, on Thursday, September 4th, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. Family members will be present as of 10:00 a.m. to receive condolences. Passed away peacefully at the Norris Point Hospital with his family by his side, Reuben Eric Samms, age 83, on Saturday, August 30, 2003. Leaving to mourn his loving wife, Ada; stepchildren: Fred (Mary) Harding, Corner Brook, Otto (Maisie) Harding, Stephenville, Sandra (Cyril) Payne, Pasadena and Lloyd (Bride) Harding, Norris Point; grandchildren: Chris, Cathy, Jason, Wendy (Jason), Michael (Tara), Cheri, Timothy, Jeffrey, Janice and one great-granddaughter, Emily; brothers: Ned (Aggie) and Lewis, Norris Point; sisters-in-law: Sarah Samms, Norris Point, Marie Samms, Corner Brook, as well as a circle of nieces, nephews, relatives, in-laws and friends. Special thanks to Western Memorial Hospital and the Bonne Bay Health Centre. Visitation began Sunday, August 31st, at noon from the RC Parish Holy Spirit Church, Norris Point from where the funeral service was held on Monday, September 1, 2003 at 2:00 p.m., Fr. He will be sadly missed by his girlfriend Sherry White in Stephenville, his two sons: David (Sonya) in Nova Scotia and Roger (Andrea) in Stephenville, his two daughters: Brenda McFatridge (Tony) in Cold Brook and Vanessa Young (Gerald) in Cape St. George. He also leaves five brothers: Lloyd (Barb), Eddy (Florence), Ernest (Geraldine), Terry (Theresa) and Albert all in Stephenville Crossing, three sisters: Joanne (Gary) Butt in Carbonear, Madonna (Nick) Whelan and Lorraine (Alvin) Smith both in Stephenville Crossing along with six grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Elizabeth. Funeral services will take place on Saturday September 6th 2003 at 10 a.m. from Assumption Parish in Stephenville Crossing with interment in the Roman Catholic Cemetery on Brook Street. June 15, 1919 - September 1, 2003

Grace was vacationing with family at Fort McMurray, Alberta when she slipped her earthly bonds and went to her eternal rest. She was predeceased by her first husband, Dorman Sheppard (1973), their daughter, Joan (1990), her second husband, Paul Neumann (2002) as well as three sisters: Ann, Dora and Bertha. Lovingly remembered by two sons and their wives, Leroy (Beulah) and George (Della) and two brothers: Raymond and Andrew Holmes. "Nan" was loved and adored by her ten grandchildren: Vicky, Rick, Stephen, Jennifer, Raymond, Jason, Colleen, Karen, Trevor and Jeff. "Nanny Grace" was special to twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She will be missed by seven wonderful step-children: Elmer, Addie, Norma, Don, Ruth, Carol, Diane, their spouses and families, as well as a large circle of family and friends. Although her loss fills us with sorrow, our hearts are filled with love and fond memories as we celebrate her life on Saturday, September 6, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at the Zion Pentecostal Church, Carolina Avenue, Stephenville. Pastors Shawn and Mary Bowers officiating. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mary Joan Griffin announce her passing at the Palliative Care Unit on Thursday, September 4, 2003 in her 84th year. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, daughter Josephine and two sisters: Jackie and Elizabeth. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Josephine Griffin; stepfather, John Brake; two stepbrothers, Raymond and Daniel; sisters: Pauline, Dorothy, Florence and Connie. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Leonard Blanchard announce his passing at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at the age of 51 years. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Mary and one son, Lenny of St. George's, one daughter, Gizelle Blanchard of St. George's and three brothers: Gerard (Lorraine) Blanchard of Stephenville Crossing, Danny (Ann) Blanchard of St. George's, Shawn (Melina) Blanchard of Calgary and four sisters: Linda Blanchard (Joe) of St. George's, Rita (Ed) Hawco of Calgary, Betty (Sandy) Young of St. George's, Beatrice (Tommy) White of St. George's and a large circle of relatives and friends. Eighteen grandchildren, twenty one great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Her sister Mary (Roland) Lane of Englee. Also a large circle of relatives and friends. On August 23, 2003 Teri Gooch, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. David Gooch and granddaughter of Louise and the late Cletus White of Stephenville Crossing was married to Eric Sigouin, son of Jean and Suzanne Sigouin. Teri, formerly from Gander is presently living in Airdrie, Alberta where she met Eric who is originally from Aylmer, Quebec. The Catholic ceremony was held in Eric's home town of Aylmer but Newfoundland was well represented by many of Teri's aunts, uncles and cousins who made the trip.

Congratulations are extended to Leah Keats and Rob Ash who were married on August 2nd, 2003, at Zion Pentecostal Church, Stephenville. The great-uncle of the groom, Major Fred Ash of the Salvation Army's Toronto Territorial Headquarters, performed the ceremony assisted by Pastor Sean Bowers of Stephenville. Laurie Muise, sister of the bride, was matron of honour and Ryan Durnford, friend of the groom, was best man. Dinner and reception followed at the Port au Port Room, Holiday Inn, Stephenville. Rob and Leah both graduated on the Dean's list of St. Thomas University in Fredericton, N.B. in May, 2003. Leah with a B.A. (English) and Rob with a B.A. (Criminology/English). Rob was also awarded the Abdul Lodhi prize for highest standing in Criminology and Social Justice. They are presently residing in Fredericton and continuing their studies together in the Faculty of Education at STU. Predeceased by his father, John W. A. Williams and brother-in-law, Bill Poirier. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Kay (Poirier) and his son Martin John (Tammy Hughes). Bertha Clarke dies in 110th year (photo accompanied story)
Bertha Clarke
, believed to be Newfoundland and Labrador's oldest resident, has died. Mrs. Clarke passed away Friday at the Interfaith Home for Senior Citizens in Corner Brook. She would have turned 110 years old on Oct. 20. Mrs. Clarke was born in 1893 to William and Sarah Caravan of Lushes Bight. She married Herbert Clarke and they had one son Herbert Jr. Her son and his wife Margaret had 10 children. She became a resident of the Interfaith Home when she was 88, having lived her life prior to that independently. Besides her 10 grandchildren, Mrs. Clarke and 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Clarke was predeceased by her husband in 1973 and by Herbert Jr. in 1994, as well as by her daughter-in-law Margaret Clarke in 1996 and grandson Jim Clarke in 1995. The Clarke family will be receiving visitors at Fillatre's Funeral Home on St. Mark's Avenue from 6-9 p.m. Sunday. The funeral service will take place Monday at 2 p.m. from the Salvation Army Temple on O'Connell Drive with interment to follow at Mt. Patricia Cemetery.

Passed away peacefully, Patrick (Paddy) Flynn at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, Stephenville on Monday, September 22, 2003 at the age of 88. A long time fisherman and woodsman he will be sadly missed by his wife Madeline (White) of 63 years; Mary, Pat, Nicholl and little Nicholas; brother Roderick (Susan), West Bay; sister Nora (Al) Marchman, Georgia; Aunt Tessie (Nicholas) Flynn, West Bay as well a large number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Patrick and Margaret (Gale) Flynn; brothers: Matthew, Jack, Gus, Aloysius, Mike, Hillary, Ronnie and by his sister Margaret. Visitation will begin for friends at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Lourdes on Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday 2 p.m. - 9 p.m. from where the funeral mass will be held on Friday, September 26th at 10:30 a.m. with Father Ed Terry officiating. Deanna and Shaun exchanged vows at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kingston, ON and celebrated with family and friends at the reception dinner and dance held at the Vimy Officer's Mess. Deanna's grandfather, Patrick J. Bennett walked her down the aisle. Best man was John McFadden, good friend of the groom. Groomsmen were Patrick Heebner, brother-in-law of the groom, Tony Dennis, cousin of the groom, Mike Delaney, Matt Dwyer and Scott Sample. Maid of Honour was Carol-Ann Preston, sister of the bride. Bridesmaids were Nicole Heebner, sister of the groom, Lori Merrigan, Tarragh Shanahan, Lisa Penney and Angela Sample, good friends of the bride. Angela Bennett, cousin to the bride and Jill Garrah, cousin to the groom, gave Scripture readings. Our thanks go out to all of you for doing such a great job. Special thanks to Susan Tunnicliffe, for capturing their wedding day with such beautiful photos, Dave Bennett, who was a great master of ceremonies for the evening and Sue Kelman, for doing a wonderful job with decorating the reception. Shaun and Deanna enjoyed spending vacation time at the Paddle cottage with family and friends from Newfoundland, Alberta, New Jersey, Quebec, Boston, other parts of Ontario and Pennsylvania. They are now residing in Kingston. It was a beautiful day and thanks to family and friends for helping us celebrate their marriage!

The Marriage of Melanie, daughter of Melvin & Barbara Harris of Burnt Islands, to Todd, son of Robert & June Smith of Corner Brook, took place on August 2, 2003 at St. Michael's Church in Corner Brook. Amanda Chaulk (cousin of bride) was matron of honour and Bob Smith (brother of groom) was best man. Bridesmaids were Shelley Savoury (friend of bride), Brenda Elliott (friend of bride & groom), Tracey Colbourne (sister of groom) and Leanna Flood (friend of bride). Groomsmen were Jeffrey Harris (brother of bride), Chad Elliott (friend of bride and groom), Darren Brake (friend of groom) and Michael Harris (brother of bride). Todd Harris (brother of bride) was usher and Emily Harris (niece of bride) was flowergirl. The couple honeymooned in Florida. He also leaves to mourn his three sisters: Delores (Norm) Van Sparrentak of Detroit, Alice (Gerald) Cheeseman and Gladys (Frank) Walsh, all of Marystown, along with fifteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Predeceased by his father Albert P. and sister Verlie.
