SHEARS, Mariah
Passed on: August 12th, 2016
Mariah Shears
passed away on August 12, 2016 at the Bonne Bay Health Centre in her 98th year. With her family by her side she went to meet her maker. She was predeceased by her husband Clarence in 1992, her son Monty in 2010, her son-in-law Rendall in 1994, her son-in-law Benjamin in 2005, and her grandson Brian in 2004. Leaving to mourn her with loving memories are her sons, Jim (Donna), Gerry (Juanita), her daughters Betty (Rod), Lily (and friend Steward), Maxine (Michael) and Rennie (Roger) as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mariah was born in Cape Ray in 1919. On August 12, 1936 she married Clarence Shears. In 1950 they moved to Rocky Harbour with their five children. Life wasn't always easy but by hard work and determination she raised seven children virtually single-handedly as Clarence worked away from home with Bowater's Pulp and Paper. Her children will always remember her homemade bread and the jams she made from the berries that they picked every summer. They will also remember the trips across the island to visit her relatives. Not an easy thing when there were no roads and even fewer cars, but some of the funniest family stories have spun from these adventures. Mariah was a long term member of the Salvation Army Church until it closed in Rocky Harbour. She taught Sunday school for 22 years and many former pupils remember her with fondness. She later became a member of the Pentecostal Church in Rocky Harbour. She continued to read her Bible every day until she was no longer able to see. She enjoyed singing the hymns she knew by heart at the church services held at the Bonne Bay Health Centre. Visitation will be held at the Pentecostal Church in Rocky Harbour on Saturday, August 13, 2016 from 7-9 P.M. and Sunday, August 14, 2016 from 2-4 P.M. Funeral services will take place on Monday, August 15, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. with Major Bingle, Salvation Army officiating. Interment will follow at the Salvation Army Cemetery in Rocky Harbour. Flowers and donations to a Charity of one's choice will be gratefully accepted. Special thanks to all the staff at the Bonne Bay Health Centre for their care and support and to Fillatre's Funeral Home.
