CLAUDINE WALL, a tireless volunteer, dies at 58
Claudine Wall
, a driving force behind the annual Children's Wish Foundation telethon and a tireless community volunteer, has passed away.
Mrs. Wall, one of the original hosts of the annual telethon when it first aired 10 years ago, died Monday after a battle with cancer.
She was 58.
Mrs. Wall also wrote a regular newspaper column for The Humber Log and used to host a community talk show on local cable television. She was also an active member of the Corner Brook Lioness Club until it became defunct a few years ago and joined the Corner Brook Lions Club last year.
Derek deLouche, director of the Newfoundland and Labrador chapter of the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, said it will be impossible to replace Mrs. Wall's volunteer effort. "She became such an integral part of our work because, not only did she host the telethon, but she was also helping us out through her articles in the local newspaper and with her program on cable TV," said deLouche. "Every chance she got she was promoting our work."
Volunteering to make sure events got off the ground in the Corner Brook area and offering advice on what might or might not work, deLouche and others involved with the foundation admired her willingness to speak her mind on projects and her uncanny ability to motivate other volunteers around her. Most importantly, though, deLouche said it was Mrs. Wall's understanding of what sick children were going through that truly made her services invaluable. "As a result, she was able to bring a quality to the interviews she did with the wish children that will be difficult to replace," he said. "She had an empathy for them and she had an understanding and she treated them with such respect. When she did features for us on a particular family, we always knew the family wouldn't feel pressed upon to provide information about them and knew the children would always be comfortable with what was said about them on-air."
One of the most memorable moments for deLouche was the time the foundation received an emotional letter from the mother of a young girl who had passed away, thanking the foundation for making the most of her daughter's final precious moments. Mrs. Wall was the only one who could attempt to read the letter on air during the telethon and maintain her composure.
"Claudine got through it and she paid such respect to it and was able to read it so well and the pledges just poured in after that," said deLouche.
Mark Spencer, president of the Corner Brook Lions Club, had a close, personal relationship with Mrs. Wall. She sat with Spencer's late wife Jackie in the final days of her battle with cancer last year. In fact, Mrs. Wall's funeral will be Aug. 5 - the first anniversary of Jackie's death.
Needless to say, Spencer knew what kind of person the Lions Club was getting when Mrs. Wall joined last year.
"She was a wonderful addition to the club and she was gung-ho to be involved in anything we had on the go," said Spencer. "I was going to ask her to do public relations for us because we wanted to get more women involved in the club, so this is definitely a bad loss for us and for the community as a whole."
Bernice Buckle was among the last six members of the Corner Brook Lioness Club with Mrs. Wall before it folded. Buckle was also a close friend.
"She was so full of energy and so community-minded and nothing was too much for her to do," said Buckle.
Buckle said she remembered how positive Mrs. Wall was when she was first diagnosed with cancer eight years ago.
"I went to see her and she said, "don't feel bad for me, this is just another hump," said Buckle. "She never gave up and she never said 'why me?' She was just a wonderful person and gave an awful lot to Corner Brook without ever looking for anything in return."
Mrs. Wall is survived by Ernest, her husband of 37 years; her son Stephen, daughter Carolyn and their families; and a large circle of family and friends.
Her funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday from Humber United Church on Clarence Street.
