ANDREWS Dorothy Joan Passed peacefully away at home on July 2, Joan Andrews, in her 92nd year, under the loving care of her large devoted family. Dorothy Joan Andrews (nee Snow) was born to Ethel (nee Gilbert) and Victor Snow on July 28, 1928. She grew up on the streets of old St. John's in a family of limited means but lots of love. She attended Centenary Hall, winding through the hills and alleyways with her older sister and best friend Louise. Joan's childhood included picnics in Bowring Park, train rides to Ocean Pond, and attending Girl Guides with Louise in uniforms hand made by their sister Annie from dyed flour bags. Joan was lucky in life and love as she once survived a sliding trip down Springdale Street that finished with Joan passing through the legs of a horse standing at the bottom of the hill. Joan excelled in school, winning several awards, finishing grade 11 at Curtis Academy. She later went on to graduate from the General Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1949B. It was after graduating from Curtis Academy and before starting nursing school that she met the love of her life, Clifford K. Andrews through the Curtis alumni and teachers badminton club. They were married in 1949 and began to raise their family of seven talented and independent children. Joan devoted the rest of her life to providing a stable and supportive home to her children and Clifford. Extended family members, Clifford's associates, neighbourhood children, the friends, boyfriends, and girlfriends of their offspring, and later the spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren all received the same warm welcome in the home on Grenfell Avenue that Joan and Clifford shared for nearly 70 years. That welcoming environment was reproduced in their summer home in Wesleyville where Joan and Clifford spent many summers, preserving the old homestead, creating a beautiful lush garden, literally out of the rocks, and welcoming family and visitors from near and far with a cup of tea and a raisin tea bun or if you were lucky, a meal of pan fried cod. Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband Clifford (d. 2013). Her legacy will survive through her children: Paul (wife Brenda, grandchildren Christopher and Lauren); Jeanette (partner Jeff King, grandson Michael Andrews); Linda (partner Blake Cryderman, granddaughter Denise Cornick and great granddaughter Maya O'Leary and grandson Alex Cornick, wife Julie King, great grandchildren Max and Sam Cornick and Jayden King); Dianne (husband Lorne Boone and grandson Lyndon); Peter (wife Celeste, grandsons Benjamin, Timothy, and Liam); Sylvia (husband Stephen Bartlett, grandchildren Owen and Evelyn); and Mark (wife Kay). Joan is also survived by her sister Louise Stalder (Peter, d. 2019), her brother Wallace Snow (Marie), sister-in-law June Snow, and many nieces and nephews who all have their own special memories of Aunt Joan. Joan's siblings that predeceased her are: Minnie Fowler (Art), Annie Dawe (Charles), Fred Snow (Marjorie), Walter Snow, and Don Snow. A family memorial service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John's on Wednesday, July 8th at 11:00 AM. Donations in Joan's memory may be made to the Bowring Park Foundation, a place she loved and spent many happy hours throughout her life. To send a message of condolence, or to leave a memory of Joan, please visit www.carnells.com   For those who cannot attend the funeral service, it will be livestreamed on Wednesday, July 8th at 11:00 AM. (The link will be posted in the obituary on the Carnell's website.)

ANDREWS Sybil Ruby (TUCKER) In the early morning hours of Thursday, July 9th, Sybil Ruby (Tucker) Andrews slipped away from this life after a short but difficult battle with cancer. She is pre-deceased by her mother and father, Reg and Ruby Tucker; her in-laws, Reg and Neta Andrews and her little grandson, Dominic Andrews. Her husband of 46 years, Harold, their three sons...Jeff (Jenna) with Emily, Josh & Ethan; Darren (Aislinn) with Eden, Colin & Leila; Greg (Leia) with Eliot & Simon; as well as 'adopted' son, Floyd, will morn their mom and nanny's passing for days, weeks and months to come. Her three sisters, Judy Whalen, from Brampton, ON, Lois Tucker and Linda (AL) Gurke, from Nanaimo, BC are also deeply saddened by their sister's passing. In addition there are many relatives from both the Andrews, Tucker and Maunder families who cherish her memory, not the least of which are Uncle Roy MacLellan (97 years old) and Aunt Jean Maunder, with whom Sybil had a special relationship! Of course, Sybil's kind demeanor touched many lives so there are many today who mourn her departure and cherish her memory. Due to COVID-19 restrictions that prohibit most of our family and friends from participating, there will be no visitation at this time. We may do a Celebration of Sybil's Life at a later date as restrictions are eased. We do have a FaceBook memorial page, "Remembering Sybil Andrews", set up by my son, Jeff, where you can share a memory, tell a story, express your thoughts, etc. In addition our Sunday morning church service, July 12th, will include a Reflection/Honoring segment; if you wish, you may view the livestream on the Victory Christian Centre FaceBook page at facebook.com/vccnl   Often at times like this, people are encouraged to give to a special charity. We would like to suggest, to honor Sybil's way of living, that you simply "pay forward" or bless someone in your world with an act of kindness in her memory.

BAILEY Paul Heston
Paul Heston Bailey
, born June 16, 1933 in Wesport, Nova Scotia passed away at 87 years on July 12, 2020. He was standing on the edge of the Eagle River in Labrador with his fishing rod in his hand and son-in-law at his side. 'Red' is predeceased by his mother Mary Mae Morehouse and fathers Lou Bailey and Austin Garron. Leaving to mourn are his wife, Yvonne with 63 years of marriage, daughters Kristal (Darryl), Candice (Jeff), Melanie (Bob) and son Austin Lou (Sascha), five grandchildren Jennifer (Mike), Cassandra (Steve), Colin (Fallon), Mitchell (Alex) and Blake, three step grandchildren Josh (Julie), Neal (Jill), Keighan (Rachel) and six great grandchildren, Mikayla, Chelsea, Emma, Ivy, Anna and Ryker. Red enjoyed his career as a sergeant in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces for 27 years and found a second career as a second mate with the Dept of Fisheries and Oceans for 14 years. Paul, Dad, Red, Pop, Poppy Rocks, Daddio, OMB (Old Man Bailey) truly lived and loved life. Dad was all about family and friends and he leaves us with many memories that bring a smile. When he retired, he moved to Kelligrews, NL with Yvonne to be closer to family. He was well known for being kind and generous, was supportive in our education and was so proud of all our achievements, no matter how big or small. He enjoyed life and looking forward to 'just one more trip' whether it was trap shooting, fishing, or a family vacation. He stayed connected to people and loved having a good time. He could share a new story or tell a joke no matter who was at the dinner table. His wide circle of friends included lifelong friends from Westport, the Annapolis Valley in NS, the armed forces, fishing buddies, trap shooting friends and family from one coast of Canada to the other. Red was involved in many community activities. He was a long time Mason, played volleyball and enjoyed telling you about his 8 ender in curling, spent hours and hours picking berries and smoking fish but in his later years, he truly enjoyed being part of the Rod and Gun Club and those members became more like family than friends. He would often say he'd like 'one more trip' and the boys would take him to a competition and he'd come home with a prize in the Senior Division. A special mention to Andrea, Peter, Brian, Monty, Troy, Johnny for all you did for OMB. Red also loved being on the water. He grew up on the water, was a fisherman at heart, and loved the peacefulness of an early morning cast. This year he asked if he could have 'just more trip' to get a salmon. He went on that trip and he caught a salmon. It is like he scripted his own passing and we know this is how it was meant to be. We celebrate your life and know there are a few ice cubes waiting to be melted as we toast to you. So now, with tons of emotion and lots of love from family and many circles of friends, we have to let you go on 'just one more trip.' We will dearly miss you, your stories and all your love. Family have a special thanks to friend and neighbour, Randy, who has always helped out Dad with yard work, snow clearing and house repairs. Dad always spoke highly of Randy so thank you for all you do. Many thanks to the RCMP in Cartwright for their kindness and assistance. Also a heartfelt and special thanks to Peter Hollett for his friendship and unwavering support to Jeff through this difficult time. Cremation has already taken place. Due to COVID, a service will take place at a later time. No flowers requested. If you wish, a donation can be made to the Atlantic Salmon Federation. BAMBRICK John Forsyth Joseph Passed away at the Health Sciences Centre surrounded by his loving family on July 15, 2020, John Forsyth Bambrick. Left to mourn their loss and be comforted by his memory are his devoted wife and partner of 50 years, Joan (nee Horwood), daughters Heather (Heather Green), and Karen (Ron McGraw), sister Shirley Bishop, brothers-in-law Eric Horwood, Gerald Horwood, and sister-in-law Barbara Hall, along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; as well as dear friends - many of whom were like family to him - too numerous to mention. John is pre-deceased by members of the Bambrick and Horwood families for whom he cared deeply and loved dearly. Known to many as both an athlete and musician, John excelled at each. He is a record-holding softball player known for both his pitching skills and batting strength in the St. John's Senior Men's' "A" League, with a league title, three MVP Awards, multiple top pitching and batting awards, and various other records under his belt. In 1974 he was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Softball Hall of Fame. John was, indeed, a natural athlete who also enjoyed hockey, soccer, tennis, squash, and pretty well any sport he attempted. John was perhaps best known as "the man with the horn", entertaining many thousands of people as a member of The Commanders, the band with whom he played for more than 50 years. With The Commanders as well as various other groups over the years, John performed throughout the province, was featured on CBC Radio, and shared the stage with fine musicians and dear friends. Professionally, John was a highly respected and much-loved Director of Claims with the Workers' Compensation Commission. He enjoyed not only the work itself, but also the many colleagues with whom he worked, and he maintained an exemplary reputation as one of the most favoured members of the Commission - as well as one of the best leaders of the "social committee". Many of his "Workers' Comp" colleagues have become life-long friends. John was loved for his kindness, sense of humour, as well as the ease with which he carried himself, and the compassion he showed towards others. He lived by the motto "do whatever you can to make someone's day". He was never without a smile, a kind word, a gesture of assistance, or a humourous comment. The quality of his character can be attested by the closeness and intense love of his family, the strength and longevity of his friendships, and the vast number of people who hold him in such high regard. His was a well-lived life by a well-loved man. Special thanks go out to Rodolpho "Rody" Pike and Angela Bartlett at the Heart Failure Clinic, as well as the outstanding nurses on 4SouthA and 5NorthA of the Health Sciences Centre, for their depth of knowledge, care, and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vera Perlin Society (www.veraperlinsociety.ca/donate) or to the Heart Failure Clinic via the Healthcare Foundation (709-777-5901). John's wish for us now is the same one he always had for his family and friends: "Keep smiling" Visitation at Caul's Funeral Home (84 LeMarchant Road) on Tuesday, July 21, from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. A post-covid Funeral Mass and Celebration of Life for John is being planned for a later date.

BARNABLE Stanley Francis April 18, 1928 -July 22, 2020 It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our father, Stan Barnable at the age of 92. Dad was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, uncle, great uncle, and great great uncle. He was the last of 11 children of the late James and Gertrude (O'keefe) Barnable. Dad was predeceased by brothers, Matt, Henry, Herb, Joe and Jack, and sisters Philomena, Sr. Dorothea, Sara, Mary and Dorothy. His parents and siblings were extraordinary people who were all a tremendous influence in the man our father became. Dad married Frances, daughter of John and Anne (Lovett) Thorne. They met and fell in love in 1953. She was the love of his life and he was always by her side. They went on to have us, their three sons, Steve, Paul, and Roger. Dad taught us early on the importance of family, hard work, and dedication. He worked at NFLD Minerals (talc mine) in Manuels, retiring as manager in 1993. Despite his busy work life, he was actively involved in our lives and ensured we had the opportunity to play hockey and other sports. He would drive us to practices and lessons and he never complained, that wasn't his nature. He would proudly watch us from the stands, silently cheering. He continued to be a fan cheering on his grandchildren Matthew (Sueha), Thomas, Robyn (Trevor), Olivia, Kyle, Keeley, and Meaghan. For many years, our family spent most of our summers in Dad's favourite place on earth, Ferryland. There we were surrounded by Barnable aunts, uncles and cousins. Every weekend all the Barnable's , could be found in the "old house", sitting around the kitchen table playing cards, especially when the Barlows arrived. Dad loved sports, coaching senior and minor hockey, but was best known for coaching the senior Ferryland Flyers. In his younger years, he took boxing lessons. While living in Mount Pearl, Dad became actively involved in the tennis club and he loved beating any younger players who would dare to play him, including his sons. He loved it so much he played into his 80's! He was also an avid painter, sketcher and sculptor. He could often be found up behind the old house whittling wood to make boats that he gave away to any of the children. Like his siblings, Dad was known for his artistic talents, in particular his "real life" paintings. Mom and Dad loved to travel and went to Europe and other places. Dad was a man of great integrity. He always gave the best of himself to everyone and always dropped that humorous line; gave a smile and acknowledged others, showing that these were the most important things in life, even when it was the hardest thing for him to do. He listened, he shared and passed on the simple most meaningful truths of life. He was free from judgement. He enjoyed and loved people as much as they loved him. He was constant in these qualities that were passed down to him and did his best to ensure that they live on in all of us. While we, Steven (Shari), Paul (Alexia), and Roger (Dolores) mourn the loss of our father, we are grateful that he was able to live with our mother at Tiffany Village until the end. Aunt Marg and Dad will be missed around Tiffany. He loved socializing with his friends and going down to play a game of cards and for a muffin and coffee. Mom, is eternally grateful for the life they had together, all their rich experiences and there could not have been a better man for her to share her life with. Dad was predeceased by baby girl Suzanne. Leaving to mourn brothers in law Robert Thorne and Bernard Agriesti and sister in law Bertha Thorne, as well as nieces and nephews who he cherished dearly. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, funeral arrangements and a celebration of life are pending. The love and smiles we shared will never end

BISHOP Sergeant (Ret'd) Donald Roy Roy was the kind of man who made an impression wherever he went. His gregariousness allowed him to get away with things that most wouldn't - heavy sarcasm, a colourful roster of nicknames, and a big, hearty laugh that caused his whole body to shake, especially when making comments designed exclusively for shock value. Whether at Jasmine's Restaurant, the hockey rink, or mornings at McDonald's, his quick wit and propensity to tease was guaranteed to have folks around him laughing. He passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at the age of 79 years. Originally from Grand Falls, his Canadian Armed Forces career saw the family posted to several locations across Canada, before eventually settling in Mount Pearl upon his retirement from the military. He then worked a second career as head of security at Memorial University, and, later still, took up a paper route in retirement that blossomed into his being responsible for the Telegram delivery to a significant portion of Mount Pearl and Southlands. For him, it was exercise, socialization, and a purpose for getting up in the mornings. Intermingled in his wall of career-related awards and commendations were also a litany of plaques commemorating his astounding number of blood donations and volunteerism with the Shriners over the years. Roy is predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Patsy. They had a collaborative and caring relationship, based on mutual support and a deep love for each other, which gave them three sons: Allan (Glennis), David and Kevin (Kimberly) and a daughter Michelle (Bill Martin); nine grandchildren: Christopher Fry, Stephanie Bishop (Mike), Aaron Bishop, Alyssa Bishop, Tyler Burt, Brandon Woodfine, Adam Bishop, Selena Woodfine and Jacob Bishop; four great-grandchildren: Brayden, Carson, Jaxon and Christopher. Also leaving to mourn, one sister Marie, a brother Boyd and his grandson's mother Isabelle (Fry). He was also blessed to find another love, Agnes, who he married on January 15, 2020; and whom he loved dearly. They lived happily in Catalina until his passing. He will be lovingly remembered by a very large circle of family and friends. At his request, cremation has already taken place, and there will be no visitation. Interment for family will take place at a later date. Those who desire to do so can make a donation to the Children's Wish Foundation in his memory. BISHOP Gerald Owen It is with broken hearts that the family of Gerald Owen Bishop announces his sudden passing on Sunday July 5, 2020 at the age of 80 years, surrounded by his loving and devoted family. "Jerry," as everyone called him, was the oldest son of Mary Braye (Harbour Grace) and Arthur Bishop (Heart's Desire) and is predeceased by his younger brother Arthur. He was a dedicated husband, father, "pop-pop" and friend. He leaves behind his loving wife of almost 55 years, Vera (née Wall, Grand Falls). Jerry also is mourned by his two children, Jennifer (Mark) and Stephen (Elizabeth); his three beloved grandchildren, whom he deeply adored, Matthew, Vivienne and Sadie; members of the Sheppard family, or as he would call them, the "family who raised him"; the Wall family; his sisters, brothers in-law, nieces, nephews, and a large circle of friends. Jerry was born amid humble beginnings on September 16th, 1939, in Grand Falls, NL. At Grand Falls Academy, Jerry's skill with numbers was noted by his Grade 8 teacher, who asked him to help teach older students. This is how he caught the eye of another teacher, Harry Cuff, who informed Jerry he had the smarts to attend university. Despite his protestations, strappings and occasional attempts to quit school altogether, Mr. Cuff and a circle of friends were able to help him stay the course. Jerry eventually earned scholarships to Dalhousie University and Nova Scotia Tech, where he studied electrical engineering. After graduation, he enjoyed a long career as President and CEO of a local engineering firm engaged in offshore oil projects, and subsequently with a multi-national engineering and project-management company. Jerry's priorities were well-known to everyone who knew him. Family first, always. Followed by church, travel, reading, sports and his beloved hometown of Grand Falls. He was an especially proud Newfoundlander and a dedicated member of his congregation. As part of a lifelong commitment to serving his civic and professional communities, Jerry served on the boards of the Newfoundland Offshore Oil Association, the Engineers Association of NL and the Consulting Engineers Association. He also served on the Memorial University Board of Regents, chaired the school's Finance, Investment and Campus Planning committees; and helped lead fundraising efforts for the university's Opportunities Fund, as well as for the Health Care Corporation, the Janeway Hospital, the NL Symphony Orchestra, the Canadian Cancer Society (Circle of Distinction), the Single Parents Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Northwest Rotary. Jerry was a tremendous athlete who excelled in several sports, being eventually inducted into the NL Sports Hall of Fame for both baseball and tennis. On the diamond, he was an outstanding catcher, but also versatile enough to excel at other positions. He played wherever and with whatever he could find. An old ball put together with duct tape and a broom handle was all he needed. Jerry was on the roster of both junior and senior All-Newfoundland Championship teams for Grand Falls, and continued his playing career in St. John's for the Feildians. Former teammates insisted he could "catch the ball in the dark." Yet he was modest, and we rarely saw him celebrate his own achievements. Jerry's passion for tennis led him to create the province's first year-round playing facility. He loved watching young Newfoundlanders develop their skills on courts at Riverdale and Greenbelt, and continued to champion their success at every level, including through the NL Tennis Association and the executive of local clubs. Jerry appreciated every day he was given on earth as though it were his last. Cloud formations, the veins in rocks beneath his feet, leaves falling from trees, the perfect bottle of homemade jam - all of these were meaningful to him. Every hug was delivered as though it were his last, and every smile he gave came from a deep place. He shook hands with the same comfortable familiarity with everyone he encountered, and could not allow himself to pass a stranger on the street without saying hello as though he'd known him for years. There was never a bad person, just a good person having a bad day. Jerry is resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John's. To send a message of condolence, or to share a memory, please visit www.carnells.com   In keeping with pandemic-related restrictions, a private service will be held on July 9th at Mary Queen of the World Church. Jigs and reels, stories about the old days and a nip of port will be had during a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date. Details will be announced once we are able to assemble family and friends for a commemoration of a great and storied life, well-enjoyed to its last day.

BRADBURY Nellie Jean (French) The family of the late Nellie Jean Bradbury are saddened to announce the passing of this very beautiful human being; a wonderful wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend. She passed peacefully away after a short illness in Paradise on July 19, 2020 in the presence of her son Scott and her dear caregivers Vicky and Sara. Predeceased by parents Graham and Helen (Mercer) French, husband Malcolm Bradbury, sister Valine and husband Gerald French, brother Malcolm and wife Freda French and brother -in-law Wallace Cave. Left with loving and cherished memories are son Scott of Paradise, brothers: Richard (Vera) French of Bay Roberts, Gerald (Mavis) French of Coley's Point, Jim French of Mount Hope On, sisters: Evelyn Cave of Bay Roberts, Phyllis (Matt) Petten of Port de Grave, Judy French of Bay Roberts and Jeanette Holmes of Portugal Cove, as well as a large circle of her cherished cousins, nieces and nephews. Nellie Bradbury was born in Bay Roberts on May 22, 1937. Being from a large family she enjoyed bonding with her brothers and sisters in her childhood home. She was also very close to her French and Bradbury relatives from B.C., Alberta, Ontario and Gander and she dearly loved welcoming and entertaining them during their summertime visits. The love she shared with her immediate and extended family remained with Nellie her entire life. She was a very compassionate and kind person to all living creatures and her loving presence in our hearts will always comfort each one of us as we deal with the sadness of her departure. Visitations were held at Moore's funeral home and a private family service followed on July 23 at the Anglican cemetery, Bay Roberts. BRIGGS Dr. Stanley Basil June 7, 1940 to July 18, 2020 Stan has enjoyed his last beer, shortly after his 80th birthday and after 32 years together with Dr. Jean Mercer, his wife and very best friend. In year 2000, Jean and Stan were married in a cherished ceremony near the shores of Jean's hometown St. John's, Newfoundland, where they famously posed for wedding photos in a key St. John's intersection and in Quidi Vidi harbour. Stan was born in Prince Albert Saskatchewan and attended the University of Idaho to play basketball on his way towards earning his medical degree at The University of Saskatchewan. He will be deeply missed by his wife Jean, his sister Audrey, his children Shannon and Blair (Caroline), his grandchildren Mikaela and Nathan and niece and nephew Shelley and Brett. Stan had a tendency to grab his swimming trunks when he was near anything larger than a trickling stream or kiddie pool, so locating near the warm ocean shores of White Rock, BC with his first wife Georgia seemed a natural decision as he started his career. A major contributor to the growth of the White Rock medical community since 1969, Stan was one of the original six doctors at Hilltop Medical Clinic where he spent 35 years in practice after an internship at the Royal Columbian. Stan assisted in the births of many of current White Rock area citizens. He served on the board of the Peace Arch Hospital Society and at 6-foot 10 inches tall, he was always quick to duck under the doorway and immediately take a seat in order not to frighten his younger patients. He was a gentle giant with a quick medical mind and a heart of gold. Sporting events were a mainstay of Stan's life, whether attending in person at Empire Stadium, BC Place, or GM Place or being thoroughly involved through large screen televisions. The NCAA March Madness was a critical part of Stan's annual planning and when it came to football, you could not take the Saskatchewan out of Stan whenever the Roughriders took the field, even if at BC Place. An avid reader, lifelong learner and music lover, Stan took the opportunity to travel the world and experience other cultures. A true gentleman, he always made the effort to say "thank you", with sincerity. Open with his affections, there were many times when The Big Guy could be found shedding a sentimental tear or two. Stan and Jean's many friends and extended family in Saskatchewan, Ontario, Newfoundland, B.C. and Australia will miss Stan's love of life, appreciation of close friendships and dedication to the medical community. In these days of minimal gatherings, we know that Stan would love it if you hoisted one in his honour sometime during the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stan's memory to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation or Charity of your choice would be appreciated. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Here's to Stan…..cheers!

He adored poetry and could recite many poems by heart, and the family relished his dramatic readings of greeting cards. The family thanks the Community Health and Palliative Care teams for their compassion and professionalism during Bill's brief illness. Cremation has taken place. BUTLER Colonel (ret.) Leonard "Len" Anthony
Leonard "Len" Anthony Butler, Colonel, USAF (ret.)
, resident of O'Fallon, Ill., passed away peacefully at Sycamore Village Assisted Living in Swansea, Ill., on his 80th birthday, July 23, 2020. Born July 23, 1940, in Baltimore City, Md., Len was the youngest of three boys who grew up camping, swimming, visiting Ocean City, attending Catholic School, and getting into childhood mischief. After graduating from Immaculate Conception school, he attended high school at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, and then was accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, entering in 1958. He went to West Point to play lacrosse, which he loved, and he and his team were 1961 national co-champions. To his surprise, according to his storytelling, he only later realized he would also be entering the military after graduation in 1962. Len entered the Air Force in 1962 and went straight to pilot training, beginning his career as a C-130 pilot. In 1965, he was stationed at Ernest Harmon AFB in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador. His father had told him that when travelling, he should always make every effort to get to know local people, and he did just that, marrying Marina Bennett of Seal Rocks within months of meeting her. Together they raised two kids while moving from place to place across North America. Len's Air Force service included a tour in Vietnam, a masters in nuclear engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology, promotion to Squadron Commander of the 62nd Tactical Air Squadron at Little Rock AFB, Ark., and Wing Commander of the 1st Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Fla. He retired in 1992 from Kirtland AFB, N.M., in the rank of Colonel. Family activities during that time included camping, jogging, visiting National Parks, visiting the island of Newfoundland, and encouraging the development of critical thinking skills by challenging his two kids to "look it up" when they had questions. Len was an active member of St. Nicholas Parish, in O'Fallon, Ill.; on parish council, as eucharistic minister, and with Men's Gathering. He was also active with Daedalians, Air Commando Association, and MOAA. In retirement, he continually challenged himself to step outside his comfort zone. This included taking a luthier course and making two guitars, and returning to college at 61, graduating from SWIC with an associate's degree in fine arts just shy of his 64th birthday. While at SWIC he produced beautiful ceramic pieces, sculpture, watercolor, and learned the guitar, giving a recital as part of his final project. He then began a second career teaching math at McKendree University. He taught there for 7 years, discontinuing at 71 due to Marina's cognitive decline, from then on focused solely on her care. His final years were spent at Sycamore Village, where he developed great friendships with the staff and enjoyed sharing stories of his and Marina's life together. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Marina; parents Jim and Mary Butler; parents-in-law Hayward and Blanche Bennett; stepmother-in-law Marion Bennett; brothers Dick and Jay; sisters-in-law Claudia and Marylee Butler and Alma, Gert, and Laura Bennett; and brothers-in-law Harold and Eddie Bennett. Len is survived by his children, Kelly and Mark; sisters- and brother-in-law Sr. Gertrude Bennett and Anne and Fintan Alexander; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Marina Bennett Butler Mi'kmaw Nursing Scholarship: www.gofundme.com/marina-bennett-butler-award   Share a memory or post a tribute at www.wfh-ofallon.com   A special thank you to the staff at Sycamore Village Assisted Living in Swansea, Ill., who became family to Len and Marina, and cared for them both with love and respect. Funeral: A Memorial Mass will begin at 11:00 am, Friday, July 31, 2020, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 625 St. Nicholas Dr., O'Fallon, Illinois, with Msgr. William J. Hitpas presiding. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Wolfersberger Funeral Home, O'Fallon, Illinois.

Ruth made her home in Halifax, N.S. after marrying the love of her life, Gerald (Gerry) Butler, in 1956. They have been sweethearts for over 74 years. To say Ruth was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend doesn't do justice to this incredible woman. She was adored. Her legacy is the loving home she created with Gerry and the strong, independent, and compassionate children and grandchildren she helped to raise. Her "youngsters" and her husband were her world. Ruth had a large circle of loyal and loving friends, many of whom she met at Rockingham United Church, where she gave much of her time and energy over the last several decades. Ruth is survived by her husband Gerry, daughter Pamela Collier (Chris), son Paul Butler (Molly), granddaughters Malorie Stoddard (Adam), Melissa MacPhail (Ian), and great granddaughters Peyton and Carlee. They worked hard, side by side to maintain a successful business for 38 years. For many years, they loved spending time with family and friends at their cabin on the Witless Bay Line. They retired in 1988, and Jerry died in 1995, just shy of celebrating 48 years of marriage. Theresa was dedicated to home and family. She was a seamstress, knitter, maker of meals, and homework checker, all while she was running the store. Everywhere she went, she made friends. She loved nothing more than a cup of tea, a long story and a game of cards. Theresa was practical, curious, kind, and fiercely independent. She had amazing energy and stamina. She was a woman of deep faith and a long-time parishioner and volunteer at St. Teresa's Parish. The family would like to thank the outstanding staff of the 3 Southwest Unit, as well as support staff, at Pleasant View Towers, especially Dr. Patel, who all cared for her with compassion in the last years of her life. In her memory, in lieu of flowers, she asked for donations to St. Teresa's Parish or the charity of your choice. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation, and a funeral and interment will be held for the immediate family only on Monday, July 27th, 2020, at 9:30 a.m. "People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel". (Maya Angelou) Rest in peace Mom and Dad, until we meet again.

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing, at St. Clare's Hospital, of a beloved husband, stepfather, brother, uncle and friend - Raymond M. Corbett of St. John's. Ray spent decades working at the Waterford Hospital where he cared for some of the province's most vulnerable people. An avid reader of Newfoundland books, he will be remembered for his quiet demeanor and dry wit. He is predeceased by his parents Ronald and Madeline Corbett. Ray leaves behind the love of his life Joyce, his stepchildren Reginald and Beau (Leigh) and his five grandchildren (Cole, Donté, Braeden, Myaleigh and Kneico). He will also be sadly missed by his siblings Eleanor McGrath (John), Ron Corbett (Jo-Anne), John Corbett (Bonnie), Derm Corbett (Bonnie), Charlotte Ryan (Ed Whelan) and Danette Dooley (Tom) and many nephews, nieces, family and friends, including special goddaughter, Kerri. Also saddened by the loss of our beloved Ray, the Reardon families. CODY Jamie Tragically taken from us way before his time, a loving son, brother, uncle, godfather, and friend to so many that there isn't a room large enough to hold them. He is predeceased by his father Francis Cody, nephew Bobby Pitcher, and good friend Donnie Shephard. Jamie was the best son that a mother could ask for, he cared for her deeply and treated her like the queen that she is. If you were lucky enough to be called a friend, he was there for you through thick and thin. He was generous, kind, and had a sense of humor that kept you laughing until it hurt. His passions included anything with a motor, travel, the water, being in the country and his friends. Devastated by his lost are his mother Marg; sisters: Eileen (Pat) Joyce, Carolyn (Bob) Pitcher, Christine and brother Greg, Aunts: Marg and Ann Cody, Bernadette Erickson and Isabelle Follett, his loved nieces and nephews, and many godchildren. He made himself available for adoption to the Howlett's, Chris (Amy), his mudder Gerrie and fadder Doni. Also, the Hancock family Erin (the kids) and Stefan, and their parents, Dick (Connie), and Carla. As well as special friend April Williams, Dawson Fudge and god-daughter Ava Fudge and his buddy Von. There are too many friends to list on paper, but they will all remain special to Jamie. Cremation has taken place due to COVID 19 restrictions there will not be any public visitation or service. Donations in his memory can be made to the Boys and Girls Club or the Children's Wish Foundation. Your signature smile will be forever missed and never forgotten.

She worked with the government to get improved roads, walking trails, benches, picnic tables and signs. She worked alongside the recreation committee to clean up the beaches, and got work for summer students to preserve the history of Ship Cove. From her 35 years as a teacher to later years on the Labrador Grenfell Board she served tirelessly to improve the lot of the people she considered her friends and family. The children she taught were special to her and she never forgot one name. Iris also served her God throughout her life, teaching Sunday school, leading the United Church women, serving on the manse committee to get a permanent minister for the area. She made many friends with the clergy and was always pleased to have them share a meal after Sunday service. Through the years she wore many hats, wrote letters for people, prepared their taxes, tended to the sick as they needed it, but she was most proud to be a mother and grandmother, taking time to travel and visit her children as they scattered around the world, displaying their pictures and praising their accomplishments whenever she had a willing ear. FRENCH Violet We, the children of Violet French, are deeply saddened to announce our Mom's passing peacefully in her sleep on July 22, 2020, in her home in Harbour Grace. Mom was in her 103rd year; born on January 4, 1918, the only daughter of Robert and Margaret Bray. At the early age of fourteen, Mom witnessed Amelia Earhart's stop over on her solo journey through the Harbour Grace Airport. In 1940 Mom met the love of her life, Silas, and they married in 1942. Mom was a hands-on stay at home Mom who raised her six children and then tended her sick husband until his death in 1993. When most people think retirement in their sixties, Mom began an administrative career with the SW Moores Memorial Stadium and the Harbour Grace Council, being mentored by Dick Power and continued working well into her seventies. Mom loved nature, walking three km per day up until her 96th year when she had to cut back to a shorter route. Mom loved her garden where she tended her lilac trees, her rhubarb plants and her flowers. Daily she kept watch on the activities in the harbour from her vantage point overlooking the ocean. Mom's calling in life was to be a mother, family was paramount and special occasions were planned around family events where tradition was the rule of the day. While Mom was very independent and embraced her life, she gained much solace through her faith and her regular attendance at St Paul's Anglican Church. Mom was predeceased by her late husband, Silas the love of her life; her parents, Robert and Margaret (Hibbs) Bray; three brothers: Grant (Margaret) Bray, Ernest (Sadie) Bray and Ross (Floss) Bray; grandson Gary Savoie and special niece Cynthia (Max) Piercey. Mom is survived by her six children: Sandra (Colin) MacPherson, Dartmouth, NS, Lorna (Aaron) Poole, Summerside, PE , Robert, Soldier's Cove, NS, Carol Ann, Markham, ON, Gary (Clara), Happy Valley, and Elsa (Don) Penney, Springhill, NS; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. While there are many wonderful people to thank, we especially wish to thank Mom's primary caregivers: Muriel Griffin who oversaw and organized Mom's private care workers, Carol Newman, Bev Pike, Jane Hunt, and Betty Payne; her family physician, Dr Megan Hayes, who attended Mom on call with tenderness and compassion; her dear friends Linda and Aubrey Saunders, Eileen Sheppard (with her weekly treat bag), the late Joan Crocker, the late Pam Neil, and the late Christine McCarthy. Following government legislation due to Covid-19 there will be limited visitation at Noel's Funeral Home and funeral service at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Harbour Grace by invitation only. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to St. Paul's Anglican Church, P.O. Box 28, Harbour Grace, NL, A0A 2M0 or a charity of your choice. HEARN Kathleen It pains me to admit it, but apparently, I have passed away. I passed peacefully with my only son John and my granddaughters by my side on July 9th, 2020. I now will check the obituaries and finally see my name there. I was born to Bride and Tom Galway on Bell Island. We had a large family in our tiny house. Meeting me on the other side are my parents, Tom and Bride, and my sisters Betty (Jim), Ag, and Lynn. I will be sadly, sadly missed by my sisters Pauline (Gerard) and Judy (Ken), and my brothers Leo (Madonna), Gary, Ed (Josie), Don and Tom (Lilaine). I will also be missed by my niece and goddaughter Mandy, my great nephew James and many, many, many more nieces and nephews. It was on this island I met and married a beautiful man, John Hearn (Mack). My family grew to include the Hearn's. Anne, Martin, Rosemary (Nish), and Mart (Carol Ann) will be waiting for me and Jim (Dot), Ross (Howard), Lynn (Derm), and Nora (Pete) are left with wonderful memories. I was so blessed to have them as a part of my life. We had a son, which we also named John and did my best to raise him, and if I do say so myself, I did a fantastic job! And what ex daughter in law has a great relationship with their ex mother in law? Us. Thank you, Doreen, for all of the fun times and memories. An honorable mention to Mary for her submission in my obituary contest. I want to say a huge thank you to those poor people that looked after me in the end. Especially my sisters Judy and Pauline, my niece Lindsey and my favourite home care worker, Cristal (I'm her 9th) and everyone at Coombs Compassionate Home Care. I will miss seeing my above average granddaughters, Madison, Tyler, and Chelsea, grow up to be the incredible people they are meant to be. I will miss my best friend Dorothy; we had some great times. Have another drink for me. I will miss making fun of my family and friends. I will also miss partying and dancing with you all. My life, although tough at times, was full of jokes, laughter, and joy. I enjoyed speaking my mind, making you laugh and telling dirty wise cracks to get a stir out of you. As I leave you all behind, I want to thank all those who were part of my life and the butt of my jokes. In the meantime, I now have the smoking hot body I have always wanted… having been cremated. And make sure you don't forget my teeth. By da jeezus, Mack better not be late picking me up on the other side. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to the Canadian Cancer Society. Service to follow on Bell Island at St. Michaels cemetery. P.S. BOO!

KNIGHT Albert Passed peacefully away on July 4, 2020, with his family by his side, Albert Knight, 94, of Shoe Cove, NL. Predeceased by parents John & Alfreda (Dawe) Knight; brothers William, Walter, John, Maxwell, Weston; sisters Lydia (Jean), Mary, Marjorie. Leaving behind with fond and loving memories, his wife of 72 years, Mildred; daughters Geraldine, Shirley (Bill Butler), Barbara, Vera, Janet (Steve Grace), and son Owen (Norma); sister Vera Staubitzer; grandchildren Warren (Lisa), Kim, Camilla, Billy (Laurie), Darrell (Kelly), Lori (Jason), Andrew, Tommy (Lisa), Nancy, Clem (Valerie), Heather (Albert), Roger (Amanda), Sam, Max; 25 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Dad was a dedicated family man; he was a man of high morals, integrity and honesty. Dad, along with mom, helped who they could without hesitation and dad would often say to us when we would visit "Do you need anything? Take what you want!" Dad was always interested in what the grandchildren and great grandchildren were doing in their lives and where they were travelling. He never forgot these things and never forgot to ask. What a wonderful mind! Dad's humor and storytelling will be remembered in our family for generations to come; always saying funny things and sharing stories of years ago. As well, many a funny story was told of him as well. His humor was evident almost to the end. Dad was a hard-working man who along with mom, raised a family of 6 when times were hard - but we never went without. He was a great mechanic - if dad fixed it you knew it was done right. And you were not getting out of the driveway without getting your doors greased! Dad was also a bit of an inventor, and over the years had many great ideas, some of which were complicated and detailed. Our dad left school when he was in grade 5 to work and help support his family, however, he was a very intelligent man - he was continuously learning. We often said that if dad had continued his education, he could have been anything he wanted to be. We were lucky to have our dad for so long - a luxury not afforded to many and we will each carry a heavy heart forever because of his absence. As dad would always say upon ending a visit or a telephone call - "Good Luck!" - well dad, "Good Luck" on your final journey home. Our family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Health Science Center, 4 South B for their care and compassion - what wonderful people you are, and Rev. Bill Bartlett, hospital chaplain, for your comforting words and prayer. Also, neighbor John Durdle, for helping our father in his time of need. As per dad's request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service for family will be held at a later date.

LANE Veronica Kathleen (nee Gushue) June 23, 1943 - July 28, 2020 On Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at St. Joseph's Hospice, Bonnie (as she was fondly known) was finally reunited with her beloved husband Ed, after a battle with cancer. After a brief hospital stay and obtaining the dreaded news of having cancer, Bonnie deteriorated quickly and lived out her final days at St. Joseph's Hospice on Windermere Road, London, Ontario, which allowed her to be surrounded by her loving family, but all the while missing her beloved cats, Benny & Jovi. When Ed passed in 2017, they were her life! Loving Mother of Donna & Craig Langille, Paul & Kim Lane, Brenda & Rick Annaert and Nancy & Tom Wearing and a dear Nanny to her grandkids, Christopher & Timothy Lane, Charlie & Mackenzie Wearing and Tyler & Allison Annaert. She will be greatly missed by all. Daughter of the late Stephen & Mary Gushue of Whitbourne, Newfoundland and survived by her sisters: Sheila Gushue, Edna Whelan and Angela Nugent; her Late brother, James Williams; her sister/brother-in-laws: Bridget & Eric Way, Esther Lane & Ray Wickens, Rita & Gordon Thomas, Winnie & Richard Lane White and her many nieces and nephews: Bobbi Gushue, Bill and Tim Warren, Kim & Cory Way, Shawn Thomas, Candace & Michael Lane White, to mention just a few. Bonnie devoted her life to her family. Anyone that knew her, knew of her family and her cats, and of course her love of baking and making Christmas wreathes. Even in her last days, she shared her love of family to anyone who would listen. The hospital staff at the London Health Sciences centre knew about them and every nurse and doctor she met also knew about Benny and Jovi. They were so kind and caring and always took the time to listen. For the staff of St. Joseph's Hospice, although her stay was brief, they quickly got to know her and learned of her family and of course Benny & Jovi. They treated her with kindness and compassion and offered to bring her ice cream ANYTIME, even if that was at 2:00 a.m. When Ed passed in 2017 Bonnie's soul went with him - may they rest in peace together. There is a star shining brighter in our sky since they are together again. Cremation has taken place and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, as per Bonnie's Wishes. She will be laid to rest with Ed by her side, in her hometown of Whitbourne, Newfoundland when COVID restrictions have lifted and the family can travel. In Lieu of Flowers, a donation to the St. Joseph's Hospice on Windermere Road, London, Ontario, would be appreciated.

LANGFORD Michael John (1931-2020) Michael John Langford, who passed away at Cambridge, UK on 18 July 2020, was born in Chiswick, London, on 29 June 1931, the son of John Langford, a London doctor, and Margaret Higham. While he was at school, Michael became involved with the Christian Fellowship, attracted by the community's warmth and genuine concern for others. This was the beginning of his interest in Christianity in the liberal tradition, and it inspired him to be ordained. Then, after serving in the Korean War in 1950-51, this inspiration proved a demand. His studies at Cambridge had led him to a deep interest in philosophy, and after earning the appropriate degrees and serving as a curate in Bristol, he was appointed as Chaplain to Queens' College, Cambridge, from 1959 to 1963. In 1963 he was awarded his PhD in Philosophy from King's College, London, and then, in 1967, accepted an Assistant Professorship to teach Philosophy at Memorial University. Planning to stay there for two years, he ended up staying twenty-nine due to the lovely people and his new hobby - salmon fishing. While on sabbatical in Boston, he met Sally Church, a graduate student studying for a PhD in Chinese literature at Harvard. They married in 1985 and had two daughters. Having taught ethics to medical students for a number of years, Michael was appointed in 1987 to the newly created position of Professor of Medical Ethics in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial, and continued in this post until his retirement in 1996. He was honoured as Professor Emeritus in Philosophy and Medical Ethics in 2002. Michael was always a man of eclectic and varied interests. Music was one of his favourite pastimes, having studied the violin from an early age. He joined the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra in its early days and served for a time as concertmaster. In addition to music, he also developed expertise in the martial arts. He had black belts in Judo and Aikido. Another of his keen interests was wine. Having learned a great deal from his friend John Avery of Bristol, he became so accomplished that he was made wine consultant to the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation from 1970 to 1996. After retiring to England in 1996, he continued to teach and publish at Cambridge. His numerous books and articles were well received, but he also published fiction, another outlet for Michael's imagination. One is The de Vere Papers, a detective novel published in 2008. In his later years, he became a member and then an elder of The Society of Friends (Quakers). Michael's personality is difficult to put into words. He was a wonderful husband, father, and friend. He was energetic in his sharing of knowledge and interests, and, most importantly, he was incredibly kind. He made an impression on a huge number of people and will be greatly missed. Michael is survived by his wife Sally Church, daughter Jeanette & husband Laurie and daughter Katy. Sadly, he just missed seeing his first grandchild.

LAUZON PHILIPPA JANE Lisa & Donald Hurd are deeply saddened to say that their first born child and elder daughter, Philippa Jane Lauzon, died in hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia on July 31, 2020, after a lengthy illness. She was 59 years old. She will be deeply missed by us, and the rest of her loving family and friends in St. John's, Halifax, Calgary and Toronto. Philippa took great joy in recent years in Facetiming with her two little grand daughters and her emails were filled with pictures of them. She dearly loved animals, particularly cats and dogs, and she was devastated when she had to give up her beloved cats for adoption because she could no longer care for them. Although she loved all 3 her favourite was her big fluffy roly poly cat because he was very funny and made her laugh. Donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

PELLEY Cecil Calvin Sept. 25, 1933 - July 30, 2020 Cecil Calvin Pelley of St. John's, NL. passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on July 30, 2020 at his home and in the presence of his loving wife, Shirley and son, Brent. He leaves to mourn his wife of 60 years, Shirley Pelley (née: Pack); children Brent (Rhonda), Elaine (Reuven) Wpg.; and Linda (Nat) ON.; grandchildren Blair (Melissa), Alexe, Daniel and Sarah of Wpg.; great- grandchildren Marin and Mae; sister Velma (Ron) Piercey, brother Leonard; brother- in- law David Pack, sister- in- law Jennie Pack; lifelong friend John Ellis and a large circle of cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends. Cecil is predeceased by his parents Cecil Sr. and Elsie Pelley; brother Melvin and sister-in-law Gertie (Leonard). Born in St John's, NL. and raised in Hant's Harbour and Corner Brook respectively, Cec was an industrious, adventurous and friendly lad who was always ready to lend a helping hand to others. His sense of humour, love of nature, and God were redeeming qualities that later informed his life's path. Always eager to learn new skills, by his mid-twenties he had attained his pilot's licence, played and coached minor hockey and was an active member of the Canadian Army Reserve. It was in Corner Brook that Cec initially met Shirley who later moved to Montreal to complete her nursing degree. At age 25, a determined Cec went to Montreal to complete his pilot's licence and proposed to Shirley at her nursing residence. They were married in Corner Brook in 1960 and moved to St. John's to raise their 3 children. Apart from his lengthy career as a facilities supervisor, initially with the NL. Telephone Company and later with Memorial University, Cec was a devoted family man, churchgoer, handyman, Shriner and Mason. He spent time with his family camping, snowmobiling, gardening and fishing, in addition to attending their numerous church, school and extracurricular activities. He was instrumental in fostering independence and a strong work ethic in his children and grandchildren, and in other youth as a boy scout leader of the Vanier Scout Troop. Whatever he was doing, Cec often added a touch of humour when he sang a NL. shanty, danced or recited a verse! Cec was an active congregant of Cochrane Street United Church and a member of the Men's Service Club. He was a long-term member and a Past Master of the Saint John's Masonic Lodge as well as a Past President of the St. John's Shrine Club and acting member of the Mazol Oriental Shrine Band. It was through his involvement in the Shriner Mazol Temple that he was designated Hospital Emeritus and acted as a chairman of the Orthopaedic and Burn Children Committee. As one of the dedicated Shriner's, Cec also impacted many families' lives by arranging travel for burn victims requiring treatment in Montreal and Boston and by assisting with Scouts and Girl Guides Canada for children with disabilities. Furthermore, his passion to help others led him to serve on the board of directors of The Children's Rehabilitation Centre. Cec was a compassionate and loyal soul who would often quietly reflect and listen to your thoughts or stories. He also had a creative side that flourished in the poetry he wrote as well as in his handyman skills. A real Mr. Fix It, Cec loved to tinker in his shed and was proud of the tree fort he built for his grandchildren and the building and repairs he did at his cabin 'Dunsearchin' in Nine Island Pond. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, fishing, boating, snowmobiling and berry picking. He continued his hobbies and snowmobiling with his son Brent until age 78, later turning to reading, conversation and local travel when he was afflicted with Parkinson's. Shirley's extraordinary attention to Cec enabled him to continue enjoying the many comforts of home. We gratefully acknowledge the exceptional care provided by Dr. Peter Noel and Cecil's caregivers, Dale, Jonathan and Marina. Due to concerns around Covid-19, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Healthcare Foundation (NL.) To view the online guest book or leave a message of condolence, please visit www.barretts.ca   A celebration of life for Cec will be held at a later date. Cecil Calvin Pelley jovial, exuberant, free a never-ending trout in a never-ending sea…

PIKE Flora Isabella
Flora Pike
, born in Carbonear, Newfoundland, passed peacefully away on July 2nd at 93 years of age, leaving her loving family deeply saddened but forever grateful to have been loved and guided by her. Flo was raised in a loving family by Frank and Winnifred (Moore) Pike with her brothers John and Frank Jr. A close family circle and a vital, thriving community shaped her values, aspirations and great compassion, ultimately enabling her happy life and rewarding career path. As a teenager, Flo began her post-secondary education at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB before pursuing studies in Nursing at the Montreal General Hospital. Upon graduation in 1950, she returned to Newfoundland to join dedicated families and a talented inter-disciplinary team of health professionals in the establishment of the Sunshine Camp, supportive of children facing physical challenges. In the years that followed, Flo's life was largely shaped by her two life passions, specialized nursing and travel. She moved to Montreal and began a remarkable career at the Shriners Hospital for Children, an acute care center providing orthopaedic specialty care. There, her leadership and service were legendary. In her position as Head Nurse, her commitment to her young patients and their parents resonated within the hospital community and her relationships with patients and their families were lasting. Flo retired from the Shriners Hospital in the late 1980's and moved to Ottawa, always remaining in touch with former patients, traveling companions, relatives and friends. Flo's thirst for exploring the world continued all her life as diversity of culture and landscape intrigued her. Her busy life in Montreal and Ottawa included a love of bridge and curling and her travels around the globe were fascinating, but nothing kept Flo from returning home to Newfoundland every year for Christmas. For Flo, family trumped everything and her adoring family, especially her many nieces and nephews to whom she was devoted, would count the days until her arrival and relish every moment with her. She shared her life with them, traveled with them and supported them in every way possible; she was loving, adventurous and mountainous in their eyes. There is much to celebrate in a long and happy life, a purposeful career and an unfailing contribution to one's family. Her nieces and nephews were, in essence, her children and their lives were lifted by her because of her unwavering interest in them. In particular, perhaps her most precious relationships were with her niece Patti Pike, whose love and support for Flo was unparalleled and with her cousin Heather (Moores) Martin, her husband Rex and their children Steven and Andrew, Flo's family in Ottawa. Flo was predeceased by her parents, her beloved brother John Powell Pike and sister-in-law, Florence Blackmore Pike and her dear friend Mary O'Flaherty. With lasting memories, Flo leaves her much loved brother Frank and her sister-in-law Betty Pike, her adoring nieces and nephews, Bev, Bob, Janice, Frank, Janine, Valerie and Patti, their families and many dear cousins and friends. Special thanks to Dr. Nicole Dunlop, the teams at The Redwoods, LHIN and West End Villa, Anne and James McEwen and Fiona Hennessy. Cremation, entrusted to Whelan Funeral Home, has taken place in Ottawa and a celebration of life and interment will take place at a later date in Carbonear, NL. For those wishing to remember Flo, intentional gestures of kindness, a donation to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal or a children's organization close to your heart would be appreciated.

PROKOPIW Walter Peter of Wolfville Nov. 16, 1946 - July 23, 2020 Sadly, Wally died at his home in Wolfville, NS. We will miss his quiet energy and consideration of others. After time teaching in Labrador he was an enthusiastic Chemistry teacher at Horton High School for many years. Wally had the spirit to nurture interest and curiosity in students. Mole Day and the annual Christmas dinner for his students and their guests (at the old school) added pepper to the scene. A keen, independent traveler, Wally was the logistics person for heaps of off-track travel from the Lut Desert, Iran to travel by local boat on the Niger River. Wally was a garden builder - starting point being lots of rocks and a barren patch. Eventually, his vegetable garden provided bounty to be shared and his raspberry canes produced about 70 liters a season. His longtime interest in photography began in his home darkroom and latterly he shifted into digital photography. His partner, Dorothy Elton survives him, while his parents, Peter and Rosalia Prokopiw, predeceased him. He leaves memories with siblings, Elaine (Rob) and Daria (Bob); nieces, Christina and Alysson and nephew, Rob as well as the Elton family in Newfoundland. Heartfelt gratitude to dear friend, Steven Chan of Hong Kong, who was available and gave without pause. Wally preferred a quiet leaving, with his family and friends remembering his life, steadfastness and kindness. Donations in memory may be made to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, Halifax Chapter at 50 Bedford Highway, Suite 210, Halifax, NS B3M 0J9. There will be no visitation or funeral service, by request. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. STUCKLESS Selby John May 1, 1928 to July 29, 2020 Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence in St. John's, Newfoundland. Left to mourn are his loving wife of 64 years, Frances; his daughter Carol Ann (Craig); his son Andrew; his grandson Matthew; and Matthew's mother, Joanne. John was a loving, kind and gentle soul who enjoyed socializing, getting to know people and having a chat. He loved to make people laugh and always had a good joke to share. His love of people made him perfectly suited for a career serving the public, where he enjoyed 33 years working his way through the ranks to management positions with Air Canada. Having a golden heart for charity work, John excelled at community service and served as President of the Kiwanis Club of St. John's and volunteer for the Kiwanis Music Festival; as President of Glenbrook Lodge Family Council; and as a member of the Air Canada Pioneers - all this while encouraging his daughter Carol Ann to see the world and helping his son Andrew become a successful entrepreneur. John received many accolades for his public service, with his highest distinction being decorated with the Centennial Medal in recognition of "Valuable Service to the Nation" for his dedication as a Major in the Militia for over 20 years. Together with his wife Frances, they enjoyed travelling, entertaining, and relaxing at their summer cottage in Deer Park. John was a faithful member, and usher, at St. James United Church. John's most precious accomplishment was being a grandfather. The happiness that his grandson Matthew brought to him was deep and meaningful. Matthew's visits were some of the best times for "Poppy John". He could not have been more proud. Our sincere gratitude goes to those who cared for John in his final year, most notably Dr. Crocker, and the first-class nursing team at Kenny's Pond led by Jennifer McGrath. A heartfelt thank you goes to his attendant John Roche, who made him smile every day, and Amanda Greene, whose skills in recreation kept the fun activities going despite a global pandemic and who found creative ways for John to video chat with his son and daughter, who live out of province. A warm thank you also goes to Rhonda Brophy and staff of the Miller Centre as well as the personal care workers of Cambridge Estates Retirement Residence -where John and Frances spent more than five wonderful years. As per John's wishes, final arrangements have been entrusted to Barrett's Funeral Home. Given COVID-19 considerations, a private family service will be held at General Protestant Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Kenny's Pond Residence, 135 McDonald Drive, St. John's, NL A1A 0E4. While a traditional visitation to allow John's friends and family to gather one last time is sadly not possible, John would want everyone instead to raise a glass to a life well lived and to their own good health. He would be even more pleased to know you could do so over a pot of steamed mussels on your outdoor patio and think of him. And if you could manage all of this while listening to his favourite song, Oh Danny Boy, he would smile down at you from heaven for sure.
