CALDER, MD., Colin Michael Stewart
Born: November 1st, 1927
Passed on: June 15th, 2012
Michael Calder
graduated from the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons Edinburg in 1951. After five years of hospital and general practice in Scotland and England he emigrated to Newfoundland in response to an urgent appeal in the British Medical Journal for doctors for the Cottage Hospital System. After a year at Brookfield Hospital, Bonavista North, he was transferred to the Burgeo Hospital which at that time was a one doctor hospital and district practice. Dr. Leonard Miller, the Deputy Minister of Health, asked him to try it for the winter and he would be moved again in the spring if he or his wife found the isolation too much. "Dr. Mike", however had found his niche and his calling and elected to stay on. In 1959 his wife joined him in the practice when it was made a two doctor hospital. As well as the medical work he was elected to the town council and worked diligently to better the conditions in one of the most neglected and backward areas of the Province and had the satisfaction of seeing Burgeo transform into the up to date modern town that it now is. After his retirement after 32 years in Burgeo, he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership by the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association. He also joined the Lions Club. He was widely respected as a kind, gentle and compassionate doctor. His "religion" was "reverence for life" - quoting Dr. Albert Schweitzer of Lambarene. He was dedicated entirely to the care of his patients without making any conscious dedication; it was just the way that he was and he could be no other. He will be missed by many on the South Coast. A memorial service was held in Burgeo and a memorial fund started which will be sent to help build a hospital in Chinchpada, one of the poorest districts in North India where there are no Indian Government medical services of any kind. Anyone wishing to contribute to this fund may do so at any branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank) to Dr. Michael Calder Memorial in trust Ann Calder or by mail direct to Dr. A. Calder, Box 549, Burgeo, A0N 2H0.

But he was more than just a man, he was a father, a husband, a provider. To me he was my grandfather...Me pop. Our shared stories alike, the laughs, the tears of the years are what I hold most dear. And as he nears man's oldest fear, the value of his life has come Clear"
