Passed peacefully away on July 13, 2009 at the Extendicare-York Nursing Home in Sudbury, ON, Russell Allen at the age of 66. He leaves to mourn his four brothers: Max (Cassie), Reg (Jean), Don (Pauline) and Calvin (Donna), six sisters: Beulah (Lorne) Murley, Ina (George) Earle, Shirley Dicks, Jean (Eugene) Hamlyn, Linda Coombs (Ira Gillam) all of Corner Brook, Rhonda Porter, of Nova Scotia as well as numerous nieces, nephews and relatives. He is predeceased by his parents Elijah Allen (1996) and Eileen (nee Snooks) (1955), brothers-in-law Jack Coombs and John Dicks, infant brother Daniel. Memorial service will be held on Friday July 24, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Country Haven Funeral Home Chapel 167 Country Road. Interment will follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Country Haven Funeral Home 167 Country Road. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Adeline (Adgie) Anderson announce her passing at Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at the age of 92 years. Surrounded by loving members of her family and the staff of very dedicated nurses of the sixth floor and her very special friend Dr. Obeid. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her children; Harley (Susie), Danny (Kim), and George all of Meadows. Leroy (Michelle) of Irishtown, Jack of Peterborough, ON, Garry (Margaret) of Barry, ON. Melvin (Joan) of Middleton, NS. Geraldine (Wade) George of Gillams, Shirley (Bert) Shoefelt of Mississauga, ON, Goldie (Al) Rollingson of Kelowna, BC. Jean (Kevin) Slaney of Tumbler Ridge, BC, Sheila (Ed) Gillingwater, Orillia, ON, her sister; Jessie Fisher of Corner Brook, thirty grand children, forty six great grand children and twelve great great grand children, also a very large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She is predeceased by her husband Wilbert (1964), daughter Rowena (1963), parents Francis and Elizabeth White and a long list of brothers and sisters. ANDERSON, Ms. Cecil Mary
Corner Brook, NL

Passed peacefully on Thursday, July 16th, 2009, Cecil Mary Anderson age 81, at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. Cecil was born in Corner Brook on September 8th, 1927. She had a long history of employment first with Herdman Collegiate, Steers Insurance and finally retired from the Woods Department at Bowater's. Cecil served five years with the Royal Canadian Air force. She is predeceased by her parents, Harry V. And Alice Anderson. Leaving to mourn are sisters: Margaret Anderson, Corner Brook, Jean Regan (Parker), Windsor, NS, and brother Gordon (Sheila), Hantsport, NS; nephews, Stephen Anderson (Monica), Cow Head and Paul Anderson (Brenda), Gander. Visitation will take place from Fillatre's Funeral Home, 4 St. Marks Avenue on Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. followed by the Funeral Service on Tuesday, July 21 at 11 a.m. from Fillatre's Chapel, St. Marks Avenue. Rev. Dr. Wayne Cole officiating, interment to follow at Mt. Patricia Cemetery. BATSTONE, Mr. Joseph Arthur

Passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Joseph Batstone on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009, at Western Memorial Regional Hospital at the age of 72 years. Leaving to mourn is his loving companion, Muriel Brake; daughter: Beverley (Colin) Allan; son, David (Susan); daughter, Lorraine Batstone (Brian Willett), Stephenville; son, Stephen (Tammy); grandchildren: Justin, Charmaine, McKenna and Jasmine; brother: George (Margaret), Cormack; sister, Dorothy Hounsell, Dartmouth; brother, James (Angela); sister-in-law: Emily Batstone as well as nieces, nephews, and special friends. Predeceased by his wife Marilyn; mother and father: Kenneth and Selena Batsone; son: Brian; brother: Fred and sister: Kathleen Locke; brothers-in-law: Chesley Hounsell and Roy Locke. Cremation has taken place at Humber Valley Crematorium. Visitation will take place from Fillatre's Funeral Home, 4 St. Marks Avenue on Saturday 2-4 & 7-9 PM and Sunday 10-12 Noon. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mary Catherine Bennett announce her passing at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, Stephenville on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at the age of 80 years. She will be sadly missed by her son, Ricky (Rose) of Mattis Point, four daughters: Nora (Freeman) Payne of Brampton, ON, Diane (Ted) Bennett of Mattis Point, Sandra Walsh of Cormack, Cynthia (Harvey) Bennett of Mattis Point, one brother, Carl (Yvonne) King of Mattis Point, two sisters: Bertha King of Mattis Point, Madonna (Greg) Hawkins of Stephenville Crossing, 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, James Young and her son, Joseph, brothers, Vincent and Raymond, sisters, Marjorie, Alice and Mildred. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Karen Blanchard announce her sudden passing on Friday, July 24, 2009 at the age of 43 years. She leaves to mourn with many precious memories her partner Ronal Mahadeo; children Tyler (Fatima) Blanchard, Shauna Blanchard Mahadeo; grandson Isiaha Blanchard; mother Hilda Blanchard; brothers: Dwayne (Orena White), Adian (Pam); sisters: Theresa (Brent) Sharpe, Stella (Shawn Chaffey) Blanchard, Vivian Blanchard as well as other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father William Blanchard. Harris Munden Buffett,
80, passed away peacefully at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, NL, on July 22nd, 2009. Born October 20, 1928 in Belleoram, Newfoundland, Harris was the son of the late Cyril and Eleanor Buffett. He was also predeceased by his wife, Jean Helen Buffett; brother, Gerald and sister, Gladys. Left with loving memories are his son, David of Halifax; daughters: Agnes (John) Greer of Halifax, Donna (Jim) Johnston of Toronto, ON; grandchildren: Adam, David, Kathleen. He is also survived by his brothers: Rupert (Gladys) of Dartmouth, NS, Gordon (Verna), George (Brenda) of Corner Brook; sisters: Winnie Evans, Eleanor (Lloyd) Anstey, Joyce (Eric) Borden, Maxine (Ray) Gushue, all of Corner Brook; numerous nieces and nephews and his loving companion, Elsie Carter of Gander and her children: Don, Bob, Debbie and their families. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Nicky Carlson announce her passing on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital at the age of 57 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories: her husband of 38 years, Jack; her sons: Michael (special friend Alison) and Robert; her granddaughter, Julianna Brinston (Heather); her sisters: Anne Sharples (Bob), Jennifer Perry (Gerald); sisters-in-law: Judy Butler (Kevin), Barbara Carlson (Jim), Georgina Henderson (David), Dolores Carlson; brothers-in-law: Brian Carlson (Bea) and Michael Carlson (France), numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and special friends: the Sheahans, Father Barry and many other friends and colleagues too numerous to mention. Nicky was predeceased by her father, George (1985); her mother, Elizabeth Bell (1988); and brother, Richard (2001). Nicky will be remembered always for her kindness and concern for others so evident in both her family and professional life at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. Nicky faced life with tremendous humor, calmness and grace. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Rose Drover announce her passing on July 9, 2009 at the Interfaith Home in Corner Brook in her 97th year. Rose is the last survivor of eight children born to Jonathan and Martha Hutchings, Sunnyside, Trinity Bay. At almost 97 years of age, Rose has lived the longest of her parents and siblings. She is survived with fond and loving memories by her children: Jean (Robert) Young and Lorraine (James) Simmonds; four grandchildren: Judy (Kevin) Sellars, Edward and Roy Simmonds, Kenneth (Terri-Lynn) Young; grandson-in-law, Terry Green (late Rhonda); eight great-grandchildren: Christopher, Amanda, Jennifer, Maxine, Jack, Ivy, Adam and Katie; sisters-in-law: Eva Hutchings and Florence Drover; brother-in-law, Harry (Brigitte) Drover; special cousin, Gerald (Roberta) Hutchings, as well as many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by husband, Kenneth (July 31, 1958); granddaughter, Rhonda Green (July 11, 2008). It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mrs. Edna Fifield announce her peaceful passing as the result of her battle with cancer, at the age of 75 years, on Saturday, July 25th, 2009 at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, NS. Edna's love and giving spirit will be sadly missed by her two sons: Bruce (Yvonne), at Deer Lake, NF; Brian (Karen), at Sylvan Lake, AB; three daughters: Karen (Kevin) Williams, of Mahone Bay, NS; Odette (Jeffrey) Oakes, of Mahone Bay, NS; and Reba (Brad) Hillier, of Valrico, FL. Edna is also survived by eleven beautiful grandchildren: Noelle, Natalie, Aaron, Phillip, Jonathan, Tyson, Tennille, Tiffany, Tyrone, Melodie and Zachary; four precious great-granddaughters: Jael, Abigail, Elise (Tennille), Shelby (Tyson); her sister, Shirley (Bill) Oram of Deer Lake, NF; brothers: Graydon (Norma) Giles of Devon, AB; Alban (Kathleen) Giles of Deer Lake, NF; and Nelson Giles of Ottawa, ON; as well as many nieces, nephews, and a loving circle of friends, piano and college students, and cherished relatives. It is with great sadness that the family of Genevieve Gabriel announces her passing, at the age of 85 years, on Friday, July 31, 2009, at home. Born in Summerside, NL, she was the daughter of the late Cashmere and Sarah (Gallant) Canning. Through the years, she was employed at the Diana Sweets Restaurant, Snow White Laundry, T. Eatons, Smart Shoppe, Jacobsons Ladies Wear and Woolco in Sydney River, from which she retired in 1990. In retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her family and travelling with Walter, especially to St. Anne de Beaupre, Quebec and Newfoundland. Genny leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, her husband of 67 years, Walter; son, Ron (Donna); daughters, Geannie Canning and Paulette Krasowski (Carl), both of Sydney, Christine Rideout (Eric), Corner Brook, NL; 12 grandchildren, Ron (Juanita) Gabriel, Barrie, Ont., Krista Willis and Trevor Gabriel, Dartmouth, Sherry (Ben) Parsons, Enfield, Carol Anne (Mark) French and Cindy Rideout, Halifax, Angela Madison, Adam LaRusic and Lisa Walzak, Alberta, Paul (Jennifer) and Gary (Kathy) Krasowski and Connie Krasowski Morrison, Sydney; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. It is with great sadness that Jane's family announce her passing. Jane died on July 3, 2009, at the Élisabeth Bruyère Health Centre in Ottawa after a sudden and brief illness. Jane was born in Savage Cove, NL, and spent her youth living in the Straits. She worked as a teacher and a lab technician, then in her thirties met her husband-to-be, François, and began her most important job, mother. After her children became adults, she went to Carleton University to complete her Bachelor of Arts that she began decades before in Montréal at Sir George University. She graduated in 1999. Jane's great loves were her family and her garden, thick batches of peonies lit up her front yard every June. Jane is predeceased by her parents, Stephen and Ann Maria Way (White) and is deeply missed by her sisters Mary Hunt (Mount Pearl, NL) & Marion Coombs (Plum Point, NL) and their families. She is greatly missed by husband François, daughters Denise Gontard Cartwright (Tim), and Lily (Jon), stepchildren Florence Gazzini-Gontard (Pierre), Xavier (Florence) and Agnès, granddaughter Samantha, step-grandchildren Yannick, Mélanie, Victoria, Benjamin and Léah and the most recent addition to the family, great-granddaughter Scarlette Rose.

Elizabeth "Joan" Heine
, 63, of Proctor, MN died Friday July 24th in Solvay House surrounded by her family. Joan was born September 2, 1945 in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and resided there for many years. Joan worked as a switch board operator in Corner Brook, Newfoundland for the Avalon telephone company until she met and married Lee Heine who was stationed in Newfoundland with the US Air Force. She continued to work as a switch board operator at the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base located in Stephenville, Newfoundland until 1966. She then lived and moved around the world to different US Air Force Base locations wherever Lee was stationed which eventually led them to Duluth, MN in 1974 where they have resided in the area ever since. Joan worked in sales and management for the Tupperware Corporation from 1986-1999 with the Diamond Setters Unit. Joan was very proud of her Newfoundland heritage "The Rock" and always communicated this with people she met and worked with. The world is a little quieter without our Joan. Joan was preceded in death by her parents Wilson and Catherine Hicks of Corner Brook, Newfoundland and an infant child Lewis Lee. Survivors include her husband Lee Heine, two daughters: Dawn (Jonathan Bauer) Heine of Proctor, Robin Heine of Duluth, two sons: Stephen (Krystl) Wyatt-Heine of Anna, TX and Richard (Stacey) Heine of Duluth, three brothers: Terry (Annie) Hicks of Ottawa, ON, Dave (Hilda) Hicks of Pasadena,NL, Garry (Beth) Hicks of Stewiak, Nova Scotia and one sister Catherine Hackett of Stephenville, NL, four grandchildren: A.J. McGRATH, Father Father Desmond Thomas

Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2009, Father Desmond Thomas McGrath at the age of 74 years. Father McGrath was ordained on June 4, 1961 at Holy Redeemer Cathedral in Corner Brook where he served as assistant pastor from 1961-1968. He served as pastor at Holy Family Parish in Port Saunders/Port au Choix (1968-1975), Our Lady of Grace Parish in Bird Cove (1975-1976), for another five years at Holy Redeemer Parish (1976-1981), at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Lourdes (1984-1989) and at St. Ann's Parish in Codroy Valley (1996-2000). During his tenure at Port Saunders he and Richard Cashin formed the Fisherman's Union -United Food and Commercial Workers Union which later became part of the Fisherman, Food and Allied Workers Union. He worked with the Fishermans' Union from 1981-1984 and 1989-1996. For over 30 years, Father Des empowered workers in the fishing industry. Through his direction and involvement in the Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters and numerous advisory bodies, he has helped establish this work force as a profession. In addition, he was instrumental in the organization and creation of his province's Fisherman, Food and Allied Workers Union. He was also a key player in the development of educational programs for fishers, plant workers and their families, notably a province-wide literacy program. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Elizabeth McGrath, brothers, Frank, Alex and Dermot, and his sister Helen Rochester and nephew Michael McGrath. He leaves to mourn his sister, Elizabeth McGrath, nieces, Terry Janovick, Claire Pollok, Catherine Pedersen, Karen McGrath, Mary Ann McGrath and Heidi Spenst, all from British Columbia, and Alexandra Borden from Brampton, Ontario, nephews, Brian McGrath, Stephen McGrath and Kevin McGrath, all from British Columbia, and Tim Rochester from Montreal, bishop Crosby, his brother Priests and many other relatives, friends and parishioners throughout Newfoundland. Born in 25/04/1924 at Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Canada
On July 17, 2009, our hearts were deeply saddened by the passing of our wonderful mother, when she left us to join our father (Fraser W. Robbins, January 11, 1997). Jean Marie Robbins (Hiscock) of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), formerly of Grand Falls, NL, passed away peacefully at the age of 85 years. Jean is survived by her three sons: Keith (Barbara) Robbins of St. John's, NL, Dr. Dale (Glenda) Robbins of Aliceville, Alabama and Blair (Ann) Robbins of Keswick, Ontario; and her daughter, Ingrid of Norwalk, Connecticut. She is also survived by grandchildren: Helena (Keith Stewart), Ian, Gregory, Matthew, Nicholas, Julia and Fraser; and beautiful great-grandchild, Leah Claire. Jean leaves behind sisters: Joy Walsh of St. John's, NL, Anne (Fred) Prins of Brampton, Ontario and brother, Laurie (Jo-anne) of London, Ontario. Also, three sisters-in-law: Wavey and Byron Winsor of Corner Brook, NL, Mildred Penney of Scarborough, ON and Jean Robbins of Corner Brook, NL. Jean has touched so many lives over the past 85 years and leaves behind many nieces and nephews, numerous friends and many wonderful relationships. Jean was born in Grand Falls, NL on April 25, 1924, the daughter of Heber and Beatrice Hiscock. She married Fraser in 1949. Jean was a teacher, homemaker, accomplished musician and was actively involved in the Salvation Army as a choir director and pianist. Throughout the years, Jean lived in Newfoundland, Montreal, Connecticut, Florida, Alabama and Toronto, as she supported Fraser and her family in their many endeavors. On Fraser's retirement in 1989, Jean enjoyed travelling and visiting family and friends throughout Canada and the USA. Jean's family meant so much to her. We loved you and we will miss you Mom. Immoveable in his faith in the risen Lord and firmly believing that at the end God will wipe away every tear from his eyes and that there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, and no more pain, our beloved son and brother went home to be with Christ. Blessed with a brilliant mind, he lived his life with unequaled passion and intensity. Our loss is great, but will only be temporary and we rejoice in the Lord for that reassurance. She will be sadly missed by her three sons: Clyde of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Alvin of Piccadilly, Arthur (Dayle) of Piccadilly, five daughters: Roseanne of New Brunswick, Bertha of Prince Edward Island, Maggie (Garth) of Nova Scotia, Della (Shawn) of West Bay, Grace (Sean) of Corner Brook, Joanne Torrow of USA, as well as her brothers and sisters, 20 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Lillian Campbell. Visitation took place on Sunday at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Lourdes. Funeral service will take place on Monday, July 13th at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Lourdes with interment in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in West Bay. Funeral arrangements are under the supervision of Russell's Funeral Home, Stephenville.
