on St. John's radio station VOCM as a teenager, motivated by a desire
to own a car. This passion for mechanical transport would last a lifetime,
seeing him acquiring, fixing, and riding numerous cars and motorcycles,
as well as obtaining his pilot's license in 1961. In 1957, he received
his BA from Mt. Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, putting

cars and motorcycles, his passions were varied. He skied Marble Mountain,
told funny stories, enjoyed sailing on his friend Ed's boat, made great
soup stocks and could harmonize to any tune. He took special pleasure
in seeing his daughter Alison perform on stage, and in his grandchildren
Aaron and Theo. The family would like to thank dear friends Cyril and
Frances, and the staff of the fifth floor at the Western Memorial Regional
Hospital for their kindness and dedication. At his request, there will

DEATHS
FREEMAN, David
Corner Brook, NL
Passed away suddenly in England, on Friday, 23 June 2006, Dr. David
Freeman,
at the age of 69 years. At the time of his passing, David was on his way to
his alma mater, Wadham College, Oxford, where for many years he worked as an
academic and performed as an actor during the summer months; however, his career
as a university teacher was centered in Newfoundland, where he came to work
in 1962 at Memorial University in St. John's. In 1975, he began his long and
fruitful association with Memorial's Corner Brook campus (now Sir Wilfred Grenfell
College). As the first Co-ordinator of English, David laid the foundations
for the English Programme at the College, and he continued to teach there until
his retirement in 1996. Two years later he was appointed Professor Emeritus.
David had a M.A. from Oxford University, a post-graduate certificate in education
from the University of Leicester, and a Ph.D. from the University of London.
He was an active researcher, an international expert on the work of Francis
Quaries, and a valued editor with Renaissance English Test Society. He was
also an excellent amateur actor and he performed in many theatrical productions
in St. John's, Oxford and Corner Brook, notably with the Grenfell Players and
College's Theatre Programme. David was the talented and tireless producer/director
of many staged readings on themes such as the ages of man and occasions such
as Remembrance Day, St. Valentine's Day and Shakespeare's birthday, and he
was the irreplaceable presiding genius of the Annual Christmas Reading at Grenfell
College. He was an active member of Humber Rotary and the United Church. Known
for his subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) sense of humour, David was admired
for his vast knowledge of literature, his generosity of spirit and his Rabelaisian
love of life. In his own inimitable fashion, he was a community builder both
at Grenfell College and within the broader community of Corner Brook and the
west coast of Newfoundland. David was beloved brother of Jacquelin and Gillian,
uncle of Katherine and Charlotte, great uncle of Isobel and baby Edward, lifelong
friend of Nima, godfather of Bobak Davood; dear colleague of faculty and staff
of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, and a wide circle of academics in Canada,
England, the United States and Poland, devoted supporter of countless arts
and community activities; and fond mentor of many students and young people.
He is sadly missed by all. A funeral service took place at the Southdown Methodist
Church in Harpenden, Herts, UK, on Thursday, 06 July 2006, at 2:00 p.m. Donations
in his memory may be made to the Canadian Heart Foundation.
