GRANTER, Frederick Maxwell
Passed on: June 13th, 2017

Born Feb. 15, 1927, (90 years young), slipped away to his well deserved mansion in Heaven on Tuesday night, June 13, 2017. He had a major stroke and brain bleed on Thursday June 8, 2017. The day previous he was his active self. He was admitted to the Heart and Stroke Unit at Western Memorial Hospital, and later transferred to the Palliative Care Unit.
Fred is survived by his daughter Linda (Ross) Elliott of Halifax, his "like a son" and best friend Melvin Short; his "like daughters" Maxine Short and Donna (Tony) Giles; his "like" granddaughters Michelle (Short) Bursey, Melissa Short, Karen Vaters, Andrea (Gibbon) Aucoin; special great-nephew Mark Murdoch; special great-nieces Ashley Murdoch and Olivia Penney; one great-great-niece Mya and one great-great-nephew, Jensen; a large number of nieces and nephews; the Goulding cousins; sister-in-law Ruby (Dinney) Baker, Clarenville; his "sons" that he mentored at Emmanuel Pentecostal Church; drivers and special friends Hayward, Glen, Trevor, Mike and others; attentive, always concerned and caring neighbors Ben/Ann Bowering, Shawn/Amanda Williams, Dennis/Melissa Lee, Alfred/Yvonne Bridger and Walter/Fay Wells.
He was predeceased by his wife Lucy (Dinney); father and mother Sidney and Edith (Goulding); sister Julia (Harold) Penney, four brothers-in-law, and five sisters-in-law.
He spent part of his last day before being hospitalized, getting a tour of The Deer Lake Insectarium with great-nephew Mark, where he was intrigued with all the different creatures God made, and admiring the budding tulips in the garden. He just had to go there that day!!!
Fred was a bookworm, crossword puzzle whiz, poet, writer and song composer. He journaled his life's journey with intricate detail, and had hopes of someday having his memoirs published. He cherished his time in the great outdoors, taking time to inspect and analyze flower petals and budding trees, and was a bird watcher. His kind, gentle, caring ways will be missed by all who knew him. He was never in a hurry, and always had time to encourage people, hear their story and offer a helping hand.
He served as a Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Board Member and mentor at his home church, Emmanuel Pentecostal.
Fred was first employed as a Cook in the Deer Lake logging camps. Years later he was employed with the Department of Highways as a Survey Assistant, and farther along in his career, was promoted to Engineering Assistant.
He never learned how to drive until he was in his 50's, proving that attitude, not age should be a motivating force in one's life.
Visitation will be at Emmanuel Pentecostal Church, 45 Bennett Avenue, Deer Lake from 6-9 pm on Friday, June 16, 2017. A celebration of Fred's life will take place there on Saturday, June 18, 2017 at 1 pm. Reception immediately following in the Fellowship Hall.
Committal Service will take place at the church, with only pallbearers and funeral home staff accompanying his remains to its final resting place.
Funeral arrangements provided by Fillatre's Funeral Home.
Donations can be made to Emmanuel Pentecostal Church Benevolent Fund.
Thank you to Fred's family doctor, Dr. Nicholas Fay, (your concern and care was very touching), and Dr. Fay's outstanding assistant, Janice Forsey; EMS Deer Lake (your promptness and professionalism was second to none); ER doctors, Dr. King and Dr. Skanes, (your caring demeanor was so calming to his family); neurologist Dr. Shaikh (an awesome communicator and a very compassionate man); ER Nurses; Heart and Stroke nurses; Palliative Care doctors, Dr. Dunn and Dr. Cooper, and all the staff of the Heart and Stroke unit, and Palliative Care Unit. Born in Carbonear, NL to Hettie (Jennings) and George Penny, she moved to Corner Brook soon after, where she lived amongst her many, many friends, and family. She always kept her treasured Coleman stove in the trunk of her car, with tea makings, for an impromptu road trip. She was very popular and loved at her home in Almon Place, Halifax, playing Skip-Bo, Bingo (winning too frequently) and arranging afternoon teas, and we will plan a celebration of her life for her dear friends there at a later date. WOOLRIDGE, Donald
Born In: St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Born: December 17th, 1928
Passed in: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Passed on: June 6th, 2017
Donald A. Woolridge, 1928-2017
.
Retired V.P. Corporate Information Services of Confederation Life. Born December 17, 1928, in St. John's, NL, died June 6, 2017 in hospital in Toronto, age 88.
Don began his impressive career at Confederation Life in St. John's. His potential was soon noticed and he was sent to head office in Toronto for managerial training. He accepted a transfer to the global head office in 1960 and moved to Toronto with his family - wife Shirley (née Wornell), and their first two children, Karen and Doug. Their third child, Donna, was born in Toronto. His signature achievement was the computerization of Confederation Life. It began with large mainframes, was followed by a massive restructuring to online (the first insurance system of its kind in Canada), then a move to desktop PCs and teleprocessing. He enjoyed traveling on Confed business to the U.K., the U.S., the Caribbean and South America. After 41 years of service, Don retired at age 63. Three years after his retirement, Confederation Life went into receivership. Thousands of employees who'd lost their jobs, as well as retirees and their spouses, were grateful to Don when he founded the Former Confed Employees Association and led the legal fight for their fair share of pension and benefits. He was as proud of that win as he was of his other career accomplishments.
Don enjoyed golfing in Sun City Center, Florida, and spending time with family at the cottage on Twelve Mile Lake.
Don leaves Shirley, his beloved wife of 65 years; their three children: Karen (Alex), Doug (Janet) and Donna; three grandchildren: Colin Fallis, and Kevin and Paul Belvedere; and brother Ernest Woolridge of St. John's. He will also be missed by Ruth and Frank Meaney and family.
A private family funeral has already taken place. A celebration of Don's life will held in early July in Toronto. Donations in lieu of flowers are gratefully accepted in memory of Don Woolridge to the Frederick W. Thompson Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation.
