DOMINIC, George
George Dominic
, long time resident of Corner Brook and Toronto, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 16 in Toronto. He was 97 years old. George was born on November 23, 1911 in Botwood, NL. His death was sudden and unexpected. He passed away quietly at 8:15 p.m., June 16, at Toronto East General Hospital. His family was with him at his bedside.
George grew up in Botwood, attended St. Bonaventure's College in St. John's, worked for Harvey and Co. in Corner Brook, moved to Toronto to retire and lived there until his death on Tuesday. He had a garden wherever he lived, from an extensive vegetable and flower garden in Corner Brook to a balcony garden in Toronto.
He had three passions: his family, gardening and sports (they were one); and the rosary. In his memory and in his honor, this tribute is written with the rosary, the prayer he so loved, in mind. (I have taken some liberty with the prayer order.) There are three sections to the rosary, one being the glorious. He is survived by the glories in his life: his three daughters: Margaret Dominic, (New York), Mary Costa (Mississauga) and Cathi Dominic, (Toronto); his two granddaughters: Heather Dominic (New York) and Micelle Costa (Toronto); his two brothers: Leo Dominic (St. John's) and Rufus Dominic (St. John's); sister, Helen Hickey (New Jersey, USA). His wife, Elizabeth Fisher (Corner Brook); sisters: Molly and Margaret; brothers: Joseph, David and Murdoch; and son-in-law, Jack Hannigan, all preceded him in death.
The middle section of the rosary is the sorrowful. For George, th most sorrowful was the death of his wife, Elizabeth, who preceded him in death in 2000.
The third section of the rosary is the joyful. The joys of his life were his many wonderful nieces and nephews and extended family in both Canada and the United States, including son-in-law, Carlos Costa, (Toronto); sisters-in-law, Eleanor Dominic (St. John's), Mona Fisher (Corner Brook), Alice Dominic (Grand Falls) and Winifred Dominic (NL); his friends which extended over a lifetime of almost 100 years; his correspondence, which was extensive - if he had your address you received a card; his friends at his Toronto residence at Thorncliffe Park Drive - their friendship was an important part of his life in his later years. And finally, the Blue Jays and the joys of gardening. His love of gardening was immense. If plants were growable, he could grow them. He was the oldest member of his family, the oldest resident of his apartment complex and probably one of the oldest Blue Jays fans. He took great pride in his age.
George's funeral will be held Saturday, June 20th at 10:00 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Center, 50 Overlea Blvd., Toronto. For further information, contact Mary Costa, 95 Trailwood Drive, #732, Mississauga ON, L4Z 3L2 or Margaret Dominic, 348 W. 21st Street, Apt. 4R, New York, NY 10011, USA. George would have been 98 this year. He had a wondrous, rich life and for this we are enormously grateful.

GEORGE, Priscilla (Pressie)
November 26, 1925 - June 21, 2009

It is with great sadness that the family of Pressie George announce her passing on Sunday, June 21, at the age of 83. Leaving to mourn with the fondest loving memories are her devoted husband of 61 years, Dougal George, her sons Bob (Patty) and Jerry (Tina); step-grandsons Tyler and Devan; brother Willis Baker (Kay), sister Sadie Davis, dearest friends Madeline Tulk, Elizabeth Colbourne, and Lizzie Maynard, as well as many nieces and nephews, and many friends. Pressie was pre-deceased by her parents, James and Caroline Baker, brothers Tom and Art, her sister Gertrude Thorne, and her beloved sister-in-law Helen George.
Pressie was born in Lomond, Bonne Bay, and moved to Corner Brook with her family in her late teens. She and Dougal were married on April 15, 1948. Spending time camping and fishing with her family was her fondest pastime when her boys were young. Throughout her life, Pressie gave unselfishly of her time and talent to many volunteer organizations. Among these was the Red Cross Well Baby clinic at the old White House on West Street. She spent 11 years as a volunteer at the O'Connell Centre, and more than 20 years with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, to which she was a life-time member. She was also a member of the Alter Guild and AYPA of Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.
Pressie was an accomplished seamstress and creator of crafts, as well as a trophy winning bowler. Later in life, two of the things she took the most pleasure in were spending time in her garden, and going for long drives, particularly "down the coast" to her beloved Lomond, as well as Norris Point and other Bonne Bay communities. Her quiet manner, wit, and loving concern for others will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to thank the Palliative Care staff at Western Memorial Hospital for their excellent care and compassion. Gratitude is expressed as well to Pressie's caregivers.
Visitation will take place at Fillatre's Funeral Home on St. Mark's Avenue on Tuesday, June 23 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm; and on Wednesday, June 24 from 2 to 4. A family service will take place at Fillatre's chapel on Wednesday evening. No flowers by request, donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation.
