"Forever in our Hearts"
City Resident Turns 100 today
By Cliff Wells, Star Staff Writer
A city resident hits the century mark today. Bridget (Bride)
Hokansson celebrates
her 100th birthday at the Lohnes Complex.
Hokansson was born Bridget Slaney in St. Lawrence to Victor and Winnifred Slaney
June 10, 1905. Hokansson grew up in St. John's and later married Henrik Hokansson
of Sweden.
Hokansson has one daughter, Marie Thorne, five grandchildren and eight
great grandchildren. Hokansson is set to receive relatives and friends
at the Lohnes Complex at 2 p.m. today. Thorne said her mother is very
bright and active for her age. "She's doing quite well," said Thorne.
"Her hearing, eyesight and appetite's quite good. She gets up. She's
not in bed, or anything. That place (Lohnes Complex) is not for long-term
convalescents, it's for people who are up and about and able to take
care of themselves." She
said unfortunately the whole family won't be able to make it to the celebrations,
but that won't put too much of a damper on the day.
