SIMMONS, R. W. (Scott)
Passed on: May 20th, 2018

Devoted husband and family man, successful businessman, committed Christian, proud Salvationist, caring friend for those in need and less fortunate than himself. Scott lived a long and vibrant life and passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Sunday, May 20, 2018. Scott was born in Lewisporte, NL on October 4, 1932, the first of ten children to Willis and Ida Simmons. He spent most of his childhood growing up in the railroad town of Bishop's Falls. With his outgoing personality and a love of people, he made many friends and colleagues over his 85 years. Many are left to mourn his passing: his loving wife of 63 years, Ruby Estella Simmons (nee Legge); five children Bruce, June (Henry), Keith (Darlene), Bonnie (Blair), Wayne (Nadia); 12 grandchildren David (Sara), Stephanie (Blake), Jennifer (Owen), Janice, Jonathan, Sharleen (Chad), Stephen (Michelin), Sarah (Sean), Kurtis, Matthew, Christopher (Emma), Amy (Kevin); six great-grandchildren Felicity, Bella, Anna, Kate, Eva, Lillie; brothers and sisters Roger (Glorina), Bonnie (Ron), Dave (Valda), Rose, Dale (Marilyn), Cavell; brothers and sisters-in-law Bernice Simmons, Dom and Audrey Howse, Ed and Fern Lutz; special friends Bern and Debbie Pollett, Roy Brown; loyal employees who became great friends, Pete Alexander, Jim Jenkins; a very large circle of friends and colleagues. Scott was predeceased by his parents Willis and Ida Simmons, father and mother-in-law Wilson and Eva Legge, brothers Noel Simmons and Howard Simmons, sister Yvonne Reid and brother-in-law Jim Reid.
Scott and Ruby loved each other very much and shared a wonderful life together, raising their children in a Christian home, working hard, building a business and travelling the world. Scott's greatest joy was providing for Ruby and giving her and their family the best life he knew possible. His formative years taught him a strong work ethic, the value of money, thriftiness and a willingness to take chances; this served him well in his working and business career. He took great pride in his work, whether as the Circulation Manager with the Western Star, Marketing Manager with Atlantic Design Homes, or running his various business operations, Scosim Driving School, Humber Esso service station, many construction initiatives and the family farms, Hammond Farm and Scosim Farms. He put his business acumen to good use by serving on several agricultural boards and was inducted into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1997. Scott valued hard work and expected nothing less from himself and others; he equally enjoyed the fruits of his labour and he loved to surround himself with people and to socialize with friends; he laughed often and enjoyed a good story and a clean joke - whether it was him or someone else telling it. Wherever he went, he found a new friend.
Scott loved the Lord and always welcomed the opportunity to witness to others. He thoroughly enjoyed worshiping at the Salvation Army and was an active member of the band for much of his adult life. He cared for others deeply and always looked for ways to offer his help; whether with Christmas hampers, a neighbour in need, a quiet prayer, assisting with a highway accident, or volunteering with the cleanup in New York City after the 9-11 attacks - he would put his knowledge, expertise and caring nature to work. He took great pride in teaching his children and grandchildren the importance of helping others less fortunate. The family would like to thank those who provided care to Scott in recent years: Dr. Robert Young, the staff of 2 South Long Term Care, Corner Brook and 3rd Floor ALC Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Sandy Park with TLC home care, Barb Balsom with Community Health and other employees from the various health care facilities and organizations. Visitation will take place at Fillatre's Funeral Home, St. Mark's Avenue, Corner Brook on Friday, May 25, 2018 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held at the Salvation Army Temple, O'Connell Drive, Corner Brook, 2 pm Saturday, May 26, 2018. To continue Scott's legacy of caring and giving, donations may be made to the Corner Brook Salvation Army Family Services. The family guest book may be signed by visiting www.fillatre.ca

"Forever In Our Hearts"

WOOLRIDGE, Aileen Nona (nee Clare)
Passed on: May 26th, 2018

Much loved artist, walker, and mother to Alison and Nicholas, Grammie to Aaron and Theo, and welcoming mother-in-law to Lianne Friesen and Brian Marler (who could get her to do anything). Peacefully passed away at 85 years, May 26th, 2018, after a stroke ten days prior. Predeceased by her mother Anita "Nettie" Clare (Waye) and her father Raleigh Clare, and her husband Fred. Well-loved aunt of Renée, Frank, and Shane Lemessurier, predeceased by their parents Cynthia (Woolridge) and Howard Lemessurier. Aileen was born in Sackville, NB, much loved daughter of Nettie and Raleigh, who later became professional photographers. She attended Mount Allison University, earned a BFA, and met Fred Woolridge; they were married in 1960. After living in St. John's for two years, they moved to Corner Brook, and she knew she'd found her place. Like her parents, Aileen was fascinated with people, and she was able to capture through her portraits both their likeness and something deeper. Active in the city she loved, Aileen was a mentor, muse, and inspiration to many in the arts community. A gentle friend who accepted everyone, countless people enjoyed her hospitality, and sat in her kitchen to talk over a cup of tea or a glass of wine. Aileen was a strong and profoundly kind woman with too many true and good friends, near and far, to name. The family especially wants to thank: the exceptional Frances and Cyril Vardy, who were always there to support and help; Karen McLeod, for the friendship, unconditional love, and grocery runs; Barb Hoskins, for her many kindnesses; Betty Lou and Dave Ledrew; and Bernie Cumby, who amongst other things cleared the snow so that she could walk out and feed the crows, which were better fed than most humans. Together these friends and others allowed her to live independently in her home until the end of her life, which was her fervent wish. Aileen dearly loved her cat Lily, who at fifteen years is the youngest cat you've ever seen, and who, even with nine plates of food, is unhappy with the selection. The family would also like to mention the compassion and care of Dr. Mark Smallwood, her GP, the humour and empathy of Dr. Bill Eaton, her palliative care specialist, and especially the angel-like presence of all the palliative care nurses, including Mary, Beulah, and Pam (on her last shift at the palliative care unit after many years of service). And thank you to all the other nursing staff at Western memorial Hospital who walked a shell-shocked family through the worst times with such care (Kerry-Anne, Stephanie, Rebecca, Melissa and others whose names may elude us but whose kindnesses did not). Aileen didn't like funerals, so there won't be one, but a gathering in her honour will be announced at a later date. The family guest book may be signed by visiting www.fillatre.ca
