Passed peacefully away on Thursday, April 27, 2006 in his 92nd year. Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Predeceased by his wife Pearl on August 6th, 2005, parents William and Levinia and brothers and sisters. Leaving to mourn 10 children: Frank (Marilyn), Myra (Eugene) Sooley, Marie (Don) Brinson, Bruce (Deborah), Roy (Donna), Mildred (Ronald) Shanahan, Wanda (Michael) Mooney, Levinia (Jim) Vatcher, Allison (Paul) Neville, Ida (Rod) Upshall, 22 grandchildren: David, Darryl, Eugene, Trina, Stephen, Kimmy, Billy, Tracey, Wendy, Raymond, Justin, Melissa, Patrick, Melanie, Francis, Lisa, Jamie, Wesley, Lesley, Robin, Rodney, Randy, 11 great-grandchildren: Najala, Aaron, Heather, Sabrina, Daniel, Kaitlyn, Tristan, Jessica, Seth, Shea, Chase as well as a large circle of relatives and friends. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Michael Carey announce his passing at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Friday, April 28th, 2006 at the age of 59 years. He will be sadly missed by his wife Cathy, his son Mitchell, his brother Peter (Theresa) in Kippens, his three sisters: Marg (Rick) Lockyer in Port au Port, Mary Walker in Stephenville and Joan (Fred) Chard in St. John's along with his godson Peter Carey, nieces, nephews, good friends Susan and Mike Targett and many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Marie and John Carey and sister Josie Carey. Funeral services took place on Monday, May 1st, 2006 at 10 a.m. from St. Stephen's Parish on West Street in Stephenville with interment in Hillside Interfaith Cemetery on Hansen Highway. Funeral arrangements were under the supervision of Russell's Funeral Home, 39 Queen Street in Stephenville. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be gratefully accepted.

Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Centre on Saturday, April 29th, 2006, John William Patrick O'Brien at the age of 67 years. John was predeceased by his parents William and Ethel O'Brien and his brother Leo. John is survived by his loving wife Mary (nee Scott), sons: Austin (Bonnie-Sue) and Terry (Lynette), his two special granddaughters: Marisa O'Brien and Caeli O'Brien, his sisters: Patricia (Mrs. William Duffitt), Audrey, Sharon (Robert), Barbara Hillier (friend Len Carberry) and Yvonne Bastow, his sisters-in-law: Marg O'Brien, Marie (Mrs. Vincent Digout) and Bridie Scott, his brother-in-law Patrick (Bride Scott). John also leaves to mourn a large circle of nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, family and friends. The visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Monday, May 1st, 2006 at Parsons Funeral Home, 63 North Main Street, Deer Lake, NL. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will take place today, Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006 at 10:30 AM from The Roman Catholic Church in Deer Lake, with Father Aiden Devine officiating with the interment to follow at the church cemetery. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Muriel Young announce her passing on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in her 83rd year. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her brothers-in-law: Norman and Charles of Winterland. Also a large circle of nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur and her son Lee, her sisters: Hattie and Louisa (Dolly). Muriel was a life time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #3 and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and a dedicated member and volunteer of the Catholic Women's League. Visitation will take place from Parsons Funeral Home, 63 North Main Street, Deer Lake today, Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday at 10:30 a.m. from the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Devine officiating. BOWN, Melvin Rayfield
October 6, 1944 - April 19, 2006

It is with great sadness that the family of Melvin Rayfield Bown announces his passing. Melvin was born in Twillingate to Howard and Gertrude Bown of Change Islands. He met and later married Joyce Parrill of Pines Cove. Melvin retired October 2004 after a 38.6 year teaching career. He devoted himself to his students in Flowers Cove, Change Islands, Carmenville, Rocky Harbour, St. Anthony and Port aux Basques. Melvin was predeceased by his father Howard. He leaves to mourn and forever remember his wife Joyce of 42 years; sons Rodney (Velma) of Lewisporte, David (Linda) of Burin, Stephen (Gail) of Paradise; daughter Jocelyn (Kevin) of Woodstock, New Brunswick; grandchildren Matthew, Megan, Deborah, Madison, Bradley, Brittany, Joshua, Tyler and Mitchell and great grandchild Gloria. Also left to mourn are his mother Gertrude; brothers Cyril (Bernadette), Nelson (Doreen), Bertram (Margaret), Raymond (Elizabeth), Addison (Irene) and Ernest (Wendy); sisters Linda (Cyril) and Daisy (Tom), as well as a large number of nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles and family friends. Visitation took place at Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home in Lewisporte on April 21. Thanks to Rev. Bernice Spracklin for the beautiful funeral service held on Saturday April 22, 2005 at St. Matthew's United Church in Lewisporte. Interment followed at St. Matthew's Cemetery. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Phyllis Lawlor announce her passing at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Corner Brook on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at the age of 77 years. She will be sadly missed by three sons: Mike (Michelle) of Ontario, Joseph (Barb) of Clarke's Beach, Brad (Margaret) of Stephenville, two daughters: Bernice (Melvin) Keating of Ontario, Elizabeth (Lester) Affolder of Alberta and two brothers: Ambrose White of Gallants, Archie (Melba) White of Stephenville, two sisters: Ada White of Stephenville, Elizabeth (John) Gaudon of Stephenville, seven grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Morris Lawlor, one brother, Walter White and three sisters, Angela Gabriel, Johannah Cormier, Annie Gaudon. Cremation has taken place at Russell's Crematorium, Stephenville. Interment will take place at a later date at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, North River, Conception Bay.

COLE, Sadie Mary
Sadie Mary passed away April 19, 2006, at Vancouver General Hospital, in her 78th year. Born Sadie Mary Chappell of Twillingate, May 9th, 1927 to Stanley and Anne Pearl Chappell. She is predeceased by her parents; two sisters Kate and Eva; one brother George; three husbands: Edwin Greenham (1950-1962 Horse Islands), Cecil Coish (1980-1986 Stephenville) and Raymond Cole (1991-2002 Point of Bay/Springdale). Leaving to mourn: two sons: Ronald Greenham (Charlotte) of Kelowna, BC and Raymond Greenham (Christine) of Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. Also five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters: Nina Lush (Glenwood, NL), Jean Boyd and Hazel Gaulton (Fort McMurray, Alberta). As well as a large circle of relatives and friends. Aunt Sadie, as she was often called, was an active member of her church and any ladies or senior groups she could attend up to her passing. She will be forever remembered by many for her ready smile, positive outlook and her favorite game - scrabble. Special thanks to the Cole family of Pasadena, and all who sent flowers, or other expressions of love and sympathy. Funeral was held in Kelowna, BC on Saturday, April 22, 2006. Interment at Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Kelowna.

BROWN, Rose Anna (Callahan)
Passed peacefully away at her home in Redding, California, after a courageous battle with cancer, Rose Anna Callahan Brown, in her 69th year, formerly of Corner Brook. Predeceased by her parents, William B. Callahan and Alice Callahan Downey; siblings: Edward, Frederick and Kevin, and step-father Michael J. Downey. Leaving to mourn her loving husband of 44 years, Curtis Brown; sister Allison Callahan Mallory (Robert) and brothers: William R. Callahan (Daphne) and James G. Callahan (Linda); and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and step siblings in California, Illinois, British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and in Newfoundland. At Rose Anna's request, cremation has taken place. Inurnment in Corner Brook at a time to be announced.

, 83, Truro, courageously and peacefully passed away on May 7, 2006, at the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, Nova Scotia, surrounded by his family. Born on May 15, 1923, the youngest of twelve children, Granville was the son of the late Ida (Collins) and Lemuel Hoddinott. Born on Indian Islands, Newfoundland, he was predeceased by brothers: George, Donald, Gordon, William, Wilfred and Lloyd William, and sisters: Ethel (Perry), May (Brand), Alice (Lowe) and Dorothy (Fillier). His memory will continue to reside within the hearts of his beloved wife of 57 years, Pamela (Sparkes); their three children Brenda, Peter (Francine) and Karen; six grandchildren Heidi, Benjamin, Colin, Adam, Amy and Claire; two great-grandchildren Brandon and Kaiden; sister Ivy (Frampton); many nieces, nephews and friends; and his faithful dog, Panda. Granville was always extremely proud to call Indian Islands his birthplace and childhood home. As a young man, Granville worked as a teacher and carpenter, while earning his B.A. and B.Ed. from Memorial University, St. John's. He had a career as a teacher and administrator, and retired from Herdman Collegiate, Corner Brook, Newfoundland after 37 years. Granville served as a Second Lieutenant in the Canadian Army. After his retirement, Granville and Pamela moved to Nova Scotia to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He delighted in sharing treasured stories of his heritage with family and friends. His diverse interests included hunting and fishing, gardening, carpentry, reading, making annual pilgrimages back to Indian Islands, and expressing his creativity through numerous intricate woodworking projects. The Hoddinott family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to their wonderful friends and neighbors whose kindnesses greatly enhanced Granville's life during his final months; and also to the medical practitioners and health care workers of the Nova Scotia Coordinated Home Care Program, the Palliative Care Team, Colchester Hospital, the Dialysis Unit at the QEII, and the Paramedics at Emergency Health Services. Cremation has taken place and the memorial service will be held at the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro, on May 11, 2006 at 3:00 PM. Reverend Snow will preside and a reception will follow. Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Services, Colchester Regional Hospital, or to the Colchester Regional Hospital Foundation, Truro, Nova Scotia, B2N 5A1.

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Rebecca Bennett announce her passing on Sunday, May 28th, 2006, at the Bonne Bay Health Center in Norris Point, at the age of 98 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her daughters: Vera (Rendall) Pittman, Marie (Kevin) Bennett, Melinda (Peter) Mackey; her son Felix Bennett; her adopted son Kevin Freeman Bennett; her 35 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by her husband Isaac Freeman Bennett; daughters: Daisy (Jobie) Payne, Maude (Maurice) Bennett and Rosette Bennett. Catherine Rebecca Bennett, fondly known as Aunt Becky, was renown throughout the Northern Peninsula for her singing and dancing. She received the Life Time Achievement Award from the St. John's Folk Art Council in recognition of her contribution to the cultural heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. When asked what she would like to be remembered for, she replied, "For my singing and my dancing." Family and friends may visit the Holy Spirit Parish Church in St. Paul's today, Tuesday, May 30th, 2006 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Vigil for the Deceased will be held on Tuesday, May 30th, 2006 at 7 p.m. Where also the funeral service will take place from on Wednesday, May 31st, 2006 at 2 p.m. with Father Roger Poblete officiating with the interment to follow at the church cemetery in St. Paul's.
