It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mildred Alexander announce her passing at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital on Friday, April 28th, 2017 at the age of 81 years. She will be sadly missed and deeply mourned by her loving family of four sons Dominic (Val), Clarence (Blanche), Randy (Pat) and Perry (Melanie), two daughters Bride (Leo) and Janet (Todd), daughter-in-law Heather, two brothers Joe (Zita) and Clayton (Hazel), along with a large circle of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Charles, her parents Edward and Viola King, her daughter Loretta, her son Andrew (Junior), her son-in-law Monte and her sister Theresa. The family will be receiving friends at Russell's Funeral Home, Station Road in Stephenville Crossing on Saturday, April 29th from 7-9 pm and on Sunday, April 30th from 2-4 and 7-8:30 pm. Funeral services will take place on Monday, May 1st, 2017 at 10 am from Assumption Parish in Stephenville Crossing with interment to follow in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Mattis Point. It is with great sadness that the family of the late George Henry Ball announce his passing at his residence in Pasadena on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the age of 91 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his children: Jim (Shirley) Ball, Janet Rubia (Gary Wiscombe), Mary-Jane Ball (Evan Cole) and Tina (Gerald) Kelly; step-son Tony (Rhonda) Winsor and his family; grandchildren: Krystal (Bailey) Bouwmeester, Brittany Cole and Gavin Kelly; great-grandchildren: Cordell, Emmett and Thea Bouwmeester; special friend Dinah Langdon; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Howard Brooks announce his passing on Monday, April 3, 2017 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in his 86 years. Howard leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his daughter: Gail (Dennis) of Ontario; sons: Ron (Mona) of Pasadena, Jack (Cathie), and Alfred (Cathy) of Ontario; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Pearl of Corner Brook, May of Ontario; brothers-in-law: Bert of Deer Lake and Don (Evelyn) of Glovertown; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Howard was predeceased by his loving wife Evelyn of 62 years. Clyde leaves to mourn his son; Augustus Burden (Rose), granddaughter; Caroline Burden (Ernest), grandson; James Burden (Kelly), great-grandson; Jordan Burden (Loga), cousin; Hughie Payne (Rose), stepdaughter; Julia Blanchard (Harold), step-grandsons; Keith (Peggy), Danny (Debbie), and Brad (Diana). He also leaves to mourn a large number of immediate and extended families and friends. Clyde was predeceased by his parents; Eli and Margaret Burden, brothers; Hemblah, and Joshua, sisters; Emily Young (Joseph), Miriam Osmond (Clifford), his first wife Ruth nee Parsons and his second wife Hannah Burden nee Young. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Frank Carberry announce his passing at his residence in York Harbour on Sunday, April 16, 2017 at the age of 83 years. He will be deeply missed by his daughter Brenda; son Tony; grandchildren: Melissa, Heather, Savanah, Billy and Frank; great-grandchildren: Shailynn, Summer and Ben; siblings: Fred, Ross (Audrey), George (Marcella), Vera (Frank) Colson, Frances (Allan) Robbins and Barbara (Don) Kavanagh; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and his many friends from York Harbour, who were his extended family. He was predeceased by his parents Martin and Pearl; siblings: Max and Jean; sisters-in-law: Sylvia and Rowena, and his brother-in-law Garfield. EDMUNDS, Gail

It is with deep sadness that the family of Gail Annette Edmunds announces her passing on April 20, 2017 in London, Ontario. Gail passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving family after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, she was the second daughter of Ena and Cort Elkins. She was predeceased by her mother Ena Elkins (Critch), and her sister Linda Elkins. She will forever be remembered, loved and missed by her husband of 40 years, Alan Edmunds, her daughters Andrea (Peter) Leask, and Lindsey (David) Edmunds, her father Cort Elkins, her brother Barry (Debbie) Elkins, and her nieces Anna and Amanda Elkins. Gail lived a life full of love, purpose and adventure with Alan by her side. They lived throughout Canada before settling in Ontario. Gail graduated with a Master's in Education and she had an amazing career as an editor, writer and researcher. The greatest joy that Gail and Alan shared was raising and witnessing the lives of their two beautiful, kind and talented daughters. Gail's life also included a passion for photography, dance, musical theatre, and her dogs, Erin, Mandy, Floyd, Maggie, Nike and Kali. Over the last few years Gail and Alan spent their summers in Newfoundland where she spent quality time with her family, reconnected with old friends and enjoyed the beauty of the place she always called home. Gail will be remembered at a private family ceremony in St Thomas, Ontario and simultaneously at a ceremony in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. GILLEY, Melvin Gordon

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Melvin Gordon Gilley announces his passing at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook on Sunday April 16, 2017 in his 78th year. Melvin leaves to mourn his daughter Pearl (Jeremy); sons Irving (Kim), Robin (Blaire) and Ronnie; grandchildren April (Jeremy), Angie, Dana, Jacklyn (Greg), Jenesta (Monty), Jennifer (Stephen), Melvin, Olivia (Sheldon), Stephen (Vicky), Amy, Ashton, Sarah and Tamara; great-grandkids Paige, Dylan, Destinee, Hope, Ciara, Emily, Jake, Hailey, Erin, Ethan and Elyssa; sisters Maxine, Emma, Claudin, and Edna; brother Maurice (Shirley); sister-in-law Mae (Aubrey); brothers-in-law Edgar and Carl (Gertie). Melvin also leaves to mourn a large circle of relatives and friends that he loved to chat with and visit. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Marilyn Nova Lee Harding announce her peaceful passing with her children by her side at the Palliative Care Unit at W.M.R.H after a short but courageous battle with cancer on Friday, April 28, 2017 at the age of 53 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories common law husband Lee Fleming; daughter Shannon (Steve); sons Ryan, Tyler (Jasmine), Shaun; three precious grandchildren Daniel, Anthony and Baby Hailey; Scott Harding father of her children; sisters Norma (Lorne), Darlene (Reg), Marlene (Terry), Nicole (Chris); brothers Rick (Mary), Darren, Lance (Jessica). Also a large circle of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and especially her cousin Kendra Anderson who was by her side on this short but courageous journey. It is with great sadness, that the family of the late Jeffrey Enos Lawrence Hutchings announce his sudden passing at his residence in Guelph, Ontario, on Thursday, April 6, 2017. Jeffrey was born on January 31, 1985 in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. From an early age, Jeffrey was an avid outdoorsman, whose smiley face and bright eyes brought joy to all around him. Though he lived in Ontario for 19 years, he remained a Newfie Boy at heart. Jeffrey was survived by common law partner Melissa Tansley, his children Nevaeh, Jaelyn, Gaige and Vala (mother of Gaige), his mother Glennis Payne (Kirby Patey), father Milton Payne (Latiye Kulafofski), brother Adam, sister Bianca (Bobby), step-siblings Corey, Brittney (Brett), Medina and Ian, niece Brynlee, grandparents Stanley and Bride Hutchings, and Mildred Payne, great-grandmother Elva Hutchings. Jeffrey is also survived by a large circle of extended family and friends, including aunts, uncles, and many cousins. Jeffrey was predeceased by his grandfather Henry Payne, his two aunts Evelyn Payne and Melva Hutchings and his two uncles Roger and Enos Hutchings. The family will be receiving family and friends at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Cow Head, NL, on Monday, April 10th, 2017 from 7-9 pm and also on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm, with Funeral services taking place on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 2 pm, also at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Cow Head, NL, with Rev. JEWER, Ronald Ernest
Stephenville

Passed away peacefully on April 19, 2017 in the comfort of his home, Stephenville. Born June 17, 1943 in Grand Falls NL, Ron was the son of the late Clifford and Anne (Peyton) Jewer. He was an early employee of Ben's Pharmacy and later Newfoundland Power and Service Canada. He was a member of the First United Church. An avid sportsman from his youth, he was active in baseball, fishing, hunting and playing bridge. Perhaps his greatest pastime was golf. He was predeceased in 2006 by his wife of many years, Mary (Clarke). He is survived by his three children: Rhonda (Bernie), and Clark of Stephenville, and Cliff of Ontario, three sisters: Barbara (Bill) Spurr of Wolfville, NS, Joanne (Alex) Nicholson, Devon, AB, Diane (John) Hanratty, Stephenville. He is also survived by his special companion Vida Robinson Gough, and grandchildren Josh, Riley, Adam, Rebecca, Cruz, Nicole, Kaylie, Latisha and Leah. Ron had a wide circle of friends and cherished the time he spent with them. There will be no visitation. A Funeral service will be held at the First United Church, St. Clare Ave., Stephenville, at 2 pm, Saturday, April 22, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Church. KAZMEL, Sharron (Solo)
Born: March 20th, 1954

Bedford, N.S./Corner brook, N.L. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Sharron (Solo) Kazmel, 63, passed away April 28, 2017 with her children at her side. Sharron was born March 20, 1954, in Windsor N.L. She was a dedicated employee of the Bank of Montreal for over twenty years until her retirement in 2008. She was a proud and loving mother who held herself with elegance, grace and dignity. Sharron was predeceased by her best friend and loving husband of 35 years William (Bill) Kazmel, parents Hhsan and Anita Solo, brothers Sean and Denny Solo. Sharron is survived by her three children, Leanne (Craig Dixon), Susanne (Ryan Townsend), and Andrew Kazmel; two grand-daughters Claire and Danielle Dixon; and two grand-sons William Townsend and Carter Kazmel. She is also survived by her brothers Rick (Deanne) Solo, Tony (Anne) Solo, Rob Solo, Jim (Ingrid) Solo; and dear friends Joan and Gary Hilton. Sharron will also be dearly missed by her many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Cremation has occurred and visitation will be held Tuesday May 2, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, N.S. We are sad to announce the passing of our beautiful mom on Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017. Mom was born on Palm Sunday, March 25, 1923 and lived for 94 years on the land of her ancestors, the Brake family. She lived everyday loving her family and spent her married years taking care of her beloved husband, Richard, who predeceased her in 1998 and her eleven children, who cherished her more than anything in life. She leaves to mourn her children: Danny, Mary Alice (John), Ivy (David), Richard Jr. (Donna), Paul, Iris (Lee), Donna (Wayne), Kathy (Larry), Judy (David), Grant (with whom she resided until admission to Long Term Care in 2016) and Denise (Darrell); grandchildren: Angela (Kevin), Joanne (Geoff), Anne (Andrew), Michael, Julie (Darren), Joseph, Phillip, Amanda (Travis), Daniel, Jennifer (Ed), Lisa (Devin), Sean, Gail, Nicholas, Liam, Ryan, Charlie, Annie (Mathew), Benjamin, Maria, Evan, Alice, Katie, Rachel. Predeceased by granddaughter Pamela in 2001. Also survived by great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Ethan, Nathan, Alex, Jacob, Max, Julia, Joseph, Jack, Sam, Sophie, Matthew, Josie, Maggie, Baby Meyers and Dayanara. Passed away peacefully in the company of her loving family on Sunday, April 30, 2017 after a very brief stay at the Palliative Care Unit, L.A. Miller Centre, Wornetta "Neta" Lydia Marie Luscombe (nee Dinney) aged 93 years. Neta was predeceased by her husband, Hubert, son, Melvin (Theresa), and siblings, Minnie Snow (Gordon); John (Minnie); Cleo (Rowena); Jessie Legge (Isaac); Eliza Foote (Stanley); Warrick (Kay); Lucy Granter (Fred); and Ruth Chapel (George). Leaving to mourn with precious memories are her children: Lucy; Janice Smith (Willis); Ivan (Roseanne); Sandra (Richard Gosse); grandchildren: Dwayne and Lori; Dean, Suzanne and Jonathan; Trevor, Troy and Trista; and Lauren, Andrew and Daniel; her sister, Ruby Baker (Sam), 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. Born in Pilley's Island and raised in Deer Lake, Neta moved to Stephenville to work with Bannikin's and there met and married Bert in 1945. Together until his passing in 2001, they raised their family in Stephenville and opened their home to so many others: housing various friends and relations, and visiting teachers. After a flood relocated her neighborhood in 2005, Neta joined Sandra and Richard in St. John's, where for more than a decade they enjoyed her quick wit, remarkable memories, passion for good coffee and better chocolate, and loving attention each and every day. Her company and care will be sorely missed. It is with great sadness that we the family announce the sudden passing of our brother Austin McCarthy on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at his home in Corner Brook at the age of 70 years. Austin was predeceased by his loving parents Elizabeth and William McCarthy, his eldest brother Ferd and sisters Helen, Carmel and Agnes. He is survived by one remaining brother Jerry and sisters Mary, Margaret and Clare. Austin graduated from Regina High School and worked in Labrador for many years. After returning to Corner Brook, Austin was not without his struggles and for a time lived at Xavier House. He then continued to reside in Corner Brook and was employed at Scotia Recyclers until his retirement. Austin was a private, polite, positive and independent person, always quick to offer a helping hand, and had not a bad word to say about anyone. He was a perfect gentleman, loved by all and will be sadly missed. PARKER, Michael Phillip

Aged 69, of Middle Sackville, N.S., died of pancreatic cancer at the Victoria General Hospital on April 8, 2017. Michael was born Feb. 13, 1948 in Toronto and studied violin and viola at the Royal Conservatory of Music, in Banff and at Michigan State University. From 1972-1976 he was a founding member, performer and Executive Secretary with the contemporary music group Array (now Arraymusic) in Toronto. He graduated in 1972 with a MA in Classical Studies (Greek and Latin) from the University of Toronto, and completed a Ph.D. in Roman Studies from McMaster University in 1991.
In 1976, he moved to Newfoundland where he served as Principal Violist with the Newfoundland Symphony from 1976-77. In 1977 he joined the faculty of what became Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, in Corner Brook, where he was Professor of Classics and Historical Studies. He also taught courses in Music Appreciation and presented many musical events . In 2007, Michael retired from MUN and relocated to Halifax, teaching classics part-time at St. Mary's and Dalhousie, and the Seniors' College of Nova Scotia (SCANS), where his classes were popular. For many years, he shared his love of opera, in both Corner Brook (Grenfell) and Halifax (Dalhousie), through "Sunday Night at the Opera," a series of lively lectures with screenings of opera productions from his collection.
Michael's music has been performed throughout Canada, and in Amsterdam, London, Paris, Cairo, France and the United States, by such organizations as Victoria International Festival, Holland Festival, Toronto Symphony, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Minneapolis Symphony and Newfoundland Symphony. He won prizes in national and provincial competitions. Several of his works have been recorded on disc. A recording of his chamber music for clarinet, LYRE (1997), was nominated for an East Coast Music Award for Best Classical Album.
From 2012, he collaborated with composer Bob Bauer and pianist Barbara Pritchard on Musikon, a series devoted to new Canadian music. Musikon produced 10 concerts in conjunction with art installations at the Saint Mary's University Art Gallery.
In Newfoundland, Michael organized fundraisers to benefit AIDS victims. He enjoyed travel, especially to ancient Greek and Roman sites, motorcycling in his younger years, and figure skating. With help from Jan Grebneff, friend, fellow skating fan, and guardian angel during his last weeks in hospital, he was able to enjoy watching Canadian women make history at the 2017 World Skating Championships.
Predeceased by his parents, May and Fred Parker; survived by brother, Paul (Louise), Toronto; nephew, Robert; cat Morris, and a large circle of friends. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Rex White announces his passing on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at his residence in his 91st year. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his sisters: Olive Adderley, Beverley Neal and Joan (Sam) Spares; step-brother Keith Mercer; brother-in-law Roland (Kay) Howell; sister-in-law Clarice Howell; his beloved Westie "Skye"; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Daisy (née Howell), parents Randell (Ron) and Ella Whyte, step-mother Jean Whyte, brothers-in-law Jack Adderley and George Neal. Cremation has taken place at Humber Valley Crematorium. The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 5 at 11:00 a.m. from First United Church, Park Street with Rev. Jocelyn Cook officiating.
