DUNPHY, Kevin Alexander (Bud)
Passed in: Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Passed on: April 24th, 2016
1927 - 2016
Into the merciful arms of God, Bud Dunphy, fell gracefully into eternal rest on April 24, 2016, in his 89th year. Known only as Kevin Alexander Dunphy by the nuns and his banker, our dear father, husband, brother, uncle, and grandfather, left a legacy of hard work, devotion to family and a certain zest for good-natured fun. Bud was a kind, gentle and doting man. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to chart a list of those whom he have wronged or offended. He made people laugh; he was held ever so tightly to the people around him. As his health weakened in these latter months, it was clear that his heart had become so filled with kindness and love; it now had to work harder than his nimble stature would allow. And so, on a quiet Sunday afternoon, with family all around him, Bud spoke a quiet goodbye through his tender eyes and went peacefully to his reward for a life well lived.
Bud lived a life of meaningful adventure. A man of devoted Catholic faith, Bud built a foundation for his family through 40 years of work at the Bowaters Paper Mill in the Quality Control Department. This work led him on several side adventures including a stint in Durban, South Africa, to assist in the opening of the Mondi Paper Mill. But home was where his heart would always return. Prior to this, he built his own home with Shirley on West Valley Road and took to adventuring closer to home. Bud was an avid fisherman, hunter, outdoorsman, skier, golfer, boater, traveller, and cook. With encouragement from his father, PJ, he took to advancing the development of Marble Mountain after learning the sport on a rough-hewn slope down what is now known as Massey Drive. Bud was a strong proponent of ensuring that Marble Mountain became a world-class resort. His energy and passion for downhill skiing enabled him to become Marble's ambassador at home while hosting Olympic skiers, Prime Ministers, family, friends, and even more so on his ski adventures abroad. He was an active and well appreciated member of the Corner Brook Winter Carnival committees and brought a certain mischief to all of the goings on with his and Mabel's fellow committee members. Bud's faith and commitment to his church was exemplified in his brotherhood as a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree.
Pinchgut Lake became his second home. In 1971, he started to build his own log cabin by hand and it was there that he was able to mix all of his passions together; the outdoors, family, boating, gardening, good fun and an occasional Old Sam and Coke. Pinchgut Lake became a gathering place for young and old where all were welcome having a good time while making wonderful memories. The Labour Day horseshoe tournament is still as popular today as when it first started years ago. For quiet time, he crafted wood which offered up a window to his inner perfectionism in the process. With his beloved late wife Shirley, his daughter Barbara Ann and son-in-law Pat Hickey gave him four grandchildren who were his pride and joy; Patrick, Abigail, Paige and infant Rachael, who is peacefully resting with her grandmother Shirley. If there might be one regret, it is that he would not see with earthly eyes, his first great-grandchild due in October from the union of his granddaughter Allison and David Stewart. But to fill his heart with ever more love, his dear second partner in life, Mabel (Sweet), gave him an even larger family to nurture and enjoy.
Left to mourn are his loving family by marriage: Sean and Elaine King; Lorin, Marie and grandson Justin King (Gina); and Todd, Lisa and grandchildren Matthew and Alexandra Young. We will miss all those good times; things like the sudden appearance of the New Year's Eve baby, the consummate costume artist in action, the constant trickster, the self-deprecating and good-natured exhibitionist, and the smile of a man who spoke best through kind and comforting eyes. We will also miss the seriousness of a man of devoted Catholic faith, of professional perfectionism, of the value and profit of hard work and of devotion and loyalty to family. Remembering Bud and his love for all, he leaves his sisters Patricia Cormier, Anita Krick, and Sandy Janes (Henry), his brothers George (Ruby), and Larry (Pat) and all members of the Dunphy family. Bud's love and zest for life will be fondly remembered by all members of the Murphy and Sweet families. Welcoming him will be his parents Patrick and Annie, his departed siblings Jack, Don, and Terry, and deceased members of the Dunphy, Murphy, and Sweet families.
Special thanks are extended to the physicians and staff of Western Health for the incredible care and comfort provided to Bud in his last weeks. Please join family and friends for visitation and for the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will occur Wednesday April 27, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Fillatre's Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark's, Avenue followed by funeral services at the Holy Redeemer Cathedral on Mount Bernard on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. with internment to follow at Mount Patricia cemetery. Donations graciously accepted in memory of Bud may be offered to the St Vincent De Paul Society or the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Foundation.

GEORGE, Carl Harvey
Born In: Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Passed in: St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Master of Living Well
"Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, he became a butterfly"....
Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend, Special Education Teacher, Yoga Instructor, Reiki Practitioner (Healing Touch), Personal Trainer, Nutritional & Wellness Specialist, Chronic Disease Self-Management Facilitator, Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Integrative Medicine student, and Inspirational Speaker. Awarded the World Organization of Natural Medicine Humanitarian Outreach Order of Merit. For a man who saw life only as an endless ocean of possibility, love, kindness, gentleness and beauty, it is a mighty challenge to encapsulate his life in a few sentences. This father of four and beloved husband of Paula made every moment of his life count. Even the seconds leading up to his last breath he was able to express love and assure those around him that everything was beautiful. While Carl George was taken too soon from this Earth, he has left a legacy of humanitarianism that reaches far beyond all the teams of basketball he trained, the students he taught, the thousands he inspired through motivational speaking, the throngs he taught to believe-in and love themselves and the endless gifts to his family of teaching how to make stepping stones out of obstacles. He imprinted on everyone his keen understanding of the value of living every moment, living with positivity and being the master of your own destiny. He gives credit to his parents for living well, "I thought they showed me how to die with dignity and courage, I was wrong, they gave me the tools to live, when the odds were against me." Leaving to mourn wife Paula (Fillier), children Stephanie Power, Stephen (Peter Scholze), Christopher and Heather Whalen (Stephan Hutter) and grandson Sullivan Power. LAVERS, Madonna (Donna) Ezekiel
Passed on: April 23rd, 2016
Mt. Pearl, NL, formerly of Deer Lake, NL

On Saturday April 23, 2016, our beautiful daughter, sister and friend Donna Ezekiel Lavers died after a courageous battle with Breast Cancer at St. Claire's Hospital in St. John's, NL. Born in Corner Brook to parents the late Bernard Ezekiel and Mary (Brothers) Ezekiel, Donna moved to Deer Lake where she graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School. After graduation Donna went to work for the Federal Government with Transport Canada and worked for 30 years in Deer Lake and St. John's. Donna was the youngest of eight children and was blessed with a spirit and faith that shone through in her loving, caring nature. She had many challenges in her life including being legally deaf which she faced with grace and strength; an example for all of us. Her smile brought comfort and joy to those who had the privilege to know her. During her life and in her battle with cancer, Donna was surrounded by family and many, many friends. If quality of a person's life can be measured by quality and quantity of friends that surround them then Donna lived a life that guarantees her a place with God her Father in heaven. Donna was a avid quilter and Knitter and will be missed by her fellow quilt Squad members Aunt Donna Hoskins, Jessie Neville, Debbie Down and Ellen Kendall (deceased Oct 2015). On Donna's behalf we would like to offer our sincere appreciation to Dr. Lang and her team at the Health Science Center and in the Cancer Center. The treatment and care they provided was not only professional but was done with such compassion and love that it allowed Donna to be fearless and live each day with purpose. Donna is survived by her son Joshua (Sandie Gould), St. John's, daughter Renee (Tony Tulk), Springdale, mother Mary (Brothers) Ezekiel, friend Glenn MacKey, St. John's, brothers Wayne (Donna), Antigonish, NS, John, Deer Lake, Bernard (Paula), Halifax, NS, Dennis (Donna Hussey), St. John's, sisters Anita Gow (Allan), Osoyoos, BC, Cathy Reid (Andy), many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. MacPHERSON, John Roderick
Born: September 30th, 1921
Passed in: Highlands, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Passed on: April 13th, 2016
John R. MacPherson's
family are delighted to describe his life as incredibly long and healthy. They are devastated to announce his passing in the wee hours of April 13, 2016 in his 95th year. Born on September 30, 1921 John lived through a time of tremendous change and he never lacked an opinion for one moment of it. He spent some of his childhood in Cape Breton and then his late teens and early 20's overseas: first in the Newfoundland Forestry, and once Scotland grew dull he joined the RAF and spent time in North Africa, Italy, and Palestine. Once the traveler happily came home, he stayed. Over the years he was a logger and farmer, ultimately winning awards for his fine sheep from the province of Newfoundland. John (and his opinions) eventually gained notoriety as he became a columnist (for the Georgian and Western Star) and published his essays and stories in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia magazines and anthologies. He was an asset to his community as a long serving Justice of the Peace and he had an active and vibrant interest in provincial and federal politics. Yet all this pales in comparison to his proudest achievement, his family. John will be mourned by his fourteen children: John (Cathy) of Jeffery's, Ramona (Alphonse) of Stephenville, Sharon (Gerry) of Edmonton, AB, Mary Margaret of Highlands, Elizabeth (Daniel) of McKay's, Charles (Shirley) of Millville, Codroy Valley, Angus of Fox Lake, AB, Joanne (Thomas) of Enfield, NS, Alexander (Ellen) of Conception Bay South, Valerie (Paul) of Stephenville Crossing, Linda (Craig) of St. John's, Andrew (Tina) of Edmonton, AB, Rodney (Angela) of Martensville, SK and Roary (Kathy) of Mount Pearl. His 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren will miss his stories, love and acceptance deeply. He also leaves behind a sister, Mary Gushue of St. John's and a brother, Fintan of Robinsons, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews scattered across the globe. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his beloved wife Molly (nee Gillis), as well as his brothers Micheal and Roderick Joseph and his sisters Genevieve and Ann Mary. Visitation will take place Sunday, April 17th from 5-9 p.m. with prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at St. Columcille Parish, St. Fintan's from where the funeral mass will be held on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Jim Robertson officiating. Inurnment in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Highlands will take place following the service. As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. To sign the family guestbook or make a memorial donation please visit our website at www.fillatre.ca    Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fillatre's Funeral Home, Stephenville Crossing.

It is with sadness that the family of Harold Whalen announces his sudden passing at the Deer Lake Manor in Deer Lake, NL on Tuesday April 19th, 2016. He was 91 years old, born on May 13, 1924. Harold Whalen spent the majority of his life in Flower's Cove, NL. He served in the merchant navy during the Second World War, and was proud to be a veteran. Harold was involved in many work experiences over the years which included fishing at Cook's Harbour and in Red Bay with the Organ family, hauling mail by dog-team to the coastal villages, and travelling by boat to show movies in these same communities. He loved fishing, boating and cooking, and was fortunate to have worked (and travelled) on some larger vessels too. Later in his life, he ran a general store with his wife in Flower's Cove. He made many friends during his work and travels. In keeping with Harold's wishes, cremation has taken place. Harold spoke often of family and especially liked to brag to anyone who would listen about Amelia, who he referred to as "The Baby"... she was a special person in his life and he in hers. Harold is remembered also for his storytelling--he was never at a loss to entertain with his endless supply of interesting stories. A heartfelt thank you to the staff and residents at Deer Lake Manor for ensuring his last years were so enjoyable. Also a thank you to the staff at the St. Anthony hospital who helped Harold survive two heart attacks in 2007, and to the staff at the care facilities in St. Anthony and in Flowers Cove; your efforts have given us an extra ten years with our loved one. The memorial service will take place on 4th June 2016 at 2pm in St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Flower's Cove, NL; and the burial will follow at the adjacent Anglican cemetery. It was Harold's wish that we wait until the ground is not frozen. Donations may be made in Harold's honour to the St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Flower's Cove, NL.

Passed in: Curling
Passed on: April 19th, 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Stanley (Stan) Woods of Curling, Newfoundland in his home on April 19, 2016. Born in Corner Brook on December 9th 1963, he was the son to the late Annie (Frampton) Woods and Frederick (Freddy) Woods. Stan was a kind, caring and loving big man, with an even bigger heart, who saw the best in people and loved sharing and swapping stories with anyone who would listen. He was always up for a laugh, or a good chat about old cars or the goings on of Corner Brook. Stan spent part of his working years travelling North America doing long haul trucking out of New Brunswick before returning back home to the island. Stan spent many years driving taxi, giving everyone he picked up a jolly "Hello", big smile and a "yes b'y". Stan leaves behind his partner in life Sherry Harding, brother Roland (Susan) Woods, sister Maxine Woods, nieces and nephews Ashleigh (Darren), and Melissa Woods, Mark (Mallory), John (Sharon), Andy (Jolene) and Terry (Tracey) Woods, all of whom held a special place in his heart. Stan never allowed for the struggles he faced to influence his outlook, enjoying the little things life had to offer such as camping, fishing, car shows and phone calls from loved ones. Stan would give you the shirt off of his back whether he had one or not. Now he will spend his time enjoying the smell of diesel fuel and burning rubber up in the clouds. In keeping with Stanley's wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit Country Haven Funeral Home, 167 Country Road on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Monday, April 25, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. from the Country Haven Funeral Chapel. "Until We Meet Again"
Those special memories of you,
Will always bring a smile,
If only I could have you back,
For just a little while.
Then we could sit and talk again,
Just like we used to do,
You always meant so very much,
And always will do too.
The fact you're no longer here,
Will always cause me pain,
But you're forever in my heart,
Until we meet again.
