DICKS, Margaret
Corner Brook
Born in 29/07/1919
On July 29, 1919, Margaret Dicks was born on Oderin island,
Placentia Bay, as the second youngest of a family of seven that included her
parents, Catherine & Joseph,
and her siblings, Vincent, Mary, Peter, and Joseph. Her immediate family has
since left this world, and on February 4th, 2010, Margaret joined
them after a short period of peaceful rest in the palliative care unit of Western
Memorial Hospital.
At the age of 21, along with the rest of her family, Margaret
moved from Oderin to Corner Brook. Two years later in November of 1943 the family
schooner, along with Margaret's father and brothers Vincent and Joseph, was lost
in a violent storm in Trout River. After this tragedy, Margaret and Mary, who
had been teaching in the Bonne Bay area, decided to move back to Corner Brook
to live with their mother. It was there that Margaret took up a teaching position
at All Hallows School that she would keep, along with her sister Mary, until
her retirement.
Margaret and Mary were lifelong companions and the best of friends.
Margaret missed Mary terribly after her death in 1991. On Saturday, February
6th they will lie side by side at Mount Patricia cemetery. Church and prayer
were foremost in Margaret's life. She was actively involved in All Hallows parish
activities whether it be Eucharistic minister, reading at mass, preparing the
sacristy, or having fun at the weekly card game. Those who know Margaret will
remember her sense of humour. She was always quick to tell a joke and her memory
of old sayings and stories from Oderin was strong to the end, even when her memory
failed her in some other ways. Margaret was also a great lover of all animals.
She told the story of being stung by a bee as a young girl but not being able
to strike it for fear that it would be hurt.
Margaret was best known as a teacher.
One of her last conversations was with her doctor at the hospital. He said, "Miss
Dicks, I hear you were a teacher." Margaret replied in a faint whisper "Did
I teach you?". While the answer from many Corner Brook natives would be "yes",
her doctor, who is not from the area replied: "No Miss Dicks, not in school,
but you've taught me a lot since I met you." Margaret has taught us all
a lot. We will all miss her dearly. Friends may visit Fillatre's Funeral Home,
4 St. Mark's Avenue on Friday from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 PM and Saturday
10-12 Noon. The funeral mass will be held at All Hallows Church, Humber Road
at 2 pm on Saturday, February 6th, Father Ambrose Hynes officiating. Interment
immediately following at Mount Patricia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations
can be made to the Corner Brook SPCA. The family guest book may be signed or
a memorial donation may be made through our website www.fillatre.ca

HUNT, Mr. Ramsey Lindgergh "Lindy"
Born 9 August 1933 in Port au Port, Newfoundland. On 7 April 1951, at the age
of 17, Lindy joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he served on HMCS Magnificent,
an aircraft carrier where he received training as a Fire Fighter. On 8 April
1953, he was honorably released from the Royal Canadian Navy, returning home
to look after his ailing father. Lindy at this time commenced employment
with the Base Fire Hall at Harmon US Air Force Base in Stephenville, Newfoundland.
When the United States decided to close the Harmon Air Force Base, Lindy
left his position with Base Fire Hall and commenced employment with Crash
Rescue Services at the Stephenville Airport where he eventually was promoted
to Shift Supervisor.
He met Greta Marjorie Pike who was employed as a school
teacher in Port au Port, not long after coming home from the Royal Canadian
Navy and they were married on July 26, 1961. They had one son who was born
on the 16 August 1962, Ramsey John Albert Hunt.
Lindy was active with Branch
35 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Stephenville and was the Commanding Officer
of the 2904 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in Port au Port from 1972 until
1979. Lindy obtained his private pilot's license and enjoyed flying with
his young son, he helped form the Port au Port East Volunteer Fire Dept.
and was Fire Chief of this organization, he was an active Salmon Fisherman
who enjoyed Fly fishing and Moose Hunting in Newfoundland.
In 1984 at the
age of 51 Lindy and Greta decided it was time for a change in their lives
as they were now alone and their son had left home to pursue a career with
the Canadian Military Police, in Ontario. Lindy accepted the position of
Chief of Crash Rescue Services at the Fredericton Airport in Lincoln, New
Brunswick and he and Greta moved to Fredericton eventually settling in Lincoln.
From 1992 until 1995 Lindy was the Commanding Officer of the 2647 Royal Canadian
Army Cadet Corps in Oromocto.
Lindy and Greta vacationed every summer at
their cottage located at Crabs River, Newfoundland. Lindy was successful
with his passion for Moose hunting in New Brunswick having obtained his license
from the annual draw on two occasions and successfully obtained a Moose.
Lindy was an active member of The Anglican Parish of St Margaret's in Fredericton
and he retired from Crash Rescue Services with Transport Canada on 9 June
1995, having spent 44 years of his life employed in the capacity of a Fire
Fighter with different organizations. Lindy missed talking to people, something
he enjoyed the most in life and commenced employment with Checker Cab in
Fredericton, mainly so he could meet and talk to new people. He left Checker
Cab in 2003, and had heart surgery at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Lindy
never recovered fully from this surgery; however he was able to maintain
an independent lifestyle with his wife Greta at his side.
Lindy lost his
wife, Greta to Cancer on September 3, 2009. On Monday, February 22,
2010 Lindy died at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton at the age
of 76 years. Lindy was a loving husband to his wife Greta, a loving father,
hero and a positive role model for his son, Ramsey, a loving father-in-law
to Betsy, and a loving grandfather to his grandchildren Nathaniel, Vanessa
and Taylor. Lindy will be missed. A memorial service will be held for Lindy
at The Anglican Parish of St. Margaret, 775 Forest Hill Road, Fredericton,
New Brunswick at 10:00 am, 26 February 2010. Instead of flowers, donations
can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in memory of Ramsey Lindbergh
Hunt. Lindy's remains will eventually be brought to Newfoundland and placed
with his wife Greta's remains at the cemetery of the church they were married
in, St Michael's Anglican Church in Saint David's, Newfoundland. Lindy has
