COMPANION, Theodore (Ted) Joseph
Halfway Point, NL
Date of Death: January 18, 2011

Born December 28, 1956 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital to parents Eileen and Joseph (died 2004) Companion of Halfway Point, Ted will be sadly missed by all who loved him during his too short life of 55 years. With his Mom hospitalized shortly after his birth, Ted, a loving child with a captivating heart, was like a third son to his Grandmother Park as she nurtured him during his first year. Back in the loving arms of his mother, he developed into a caring son and grandson, always dropping by with flowers, favorite foods, and special keepsakes for the beloved women. Though the flowers have wilted and the food has long been eaten, these special memories will last forever. Ted served his life as more than a loving son. He was a father, brother, and devoted spouse. Ted was also a loving uncle to dozens of nieces and nephews on both the Companion and Hickey sides. Father to Steven Parsons, their time spent together may not have been great, but Steven was always on his mind and forever in his heart. Oldest brother to his special girls - sisters Maxine, Chris, Lorraine (Clarence), Audrey (George), Linda (Larry), Joanne (Wayne), and his first niece, "seventh sister" Jennifer (Sandy), Ted never failed to make them feel special. He loved them dearly and showered them with special keepsakes his whole life through. No one made his girls feel more loved and beautiful than their big brother, who held them in such high regard. Better known as Rocky to younger brothers Bernard (died 1987), Glenn, Rob (Maria), Darren (Kellie), Doug (Catherine), Neil (Penny) and Perry (Juanita), Ted was also a mentor. He spent many years hunting, fishing, camping, and working with his brothers, side by side. Master carpenter and natural tradesman in plumbing and heating, he was instrumental in shaping their lives and guiding them towards their chosen fields. To all who knew him, Ted was a jack of all trades, sought after daily by many in the community, to fix or build something, to lend a helping hand. Friends and family alike recognized Ted as a hoarder of memories. His house in Halfway Point is a treasure trove of gifts from family and friends. Every gathering at his house sure to have included a literal "walk down memory lane", with Ted flawlessly recounting detailed stories of his past. Ted was a soft hearted individual and these treasures meant everything to him. With a heart of gold that was recognized by all who knew him, he will be mourned by his family and friends. He will especially be missed by the woman who captured his heart in 1989, Geneva Mary Hickey. Soul mate and confidante for 21 years, she cared for him through thick and thin, supporting him through life's many difficulties, and loving him to the very end. Ted loved Geneva with all his heart and adopted her family like his own - Kevin (Judy), Willis (Joan), Wayne (Caroline), Derrick (Mary), Mary Ellen, Marie (Alban), Gloria (Paul), Marina (George), Elaine (Gord), Maureen (Brian), and special niece Terri-Lynn (Sherman). Friends may visit Fillatre's Funeral Home, 218 Curling Street on Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9:00 P.M. The Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, January 21st at 10:30 A.M. from Our Lady Star of the Sea, Benoit's Cove. Father Bernard Buckle officiating. The interment to follow at the church cemetery. The family guest book maybe signed through our website www.fillatre.ca

The shadows bring fear, and the dark shrouds our eyes;
But if we will turn to face Jesus the Light,
The shadow will fade as He brightens our skies.

READER, Calvin Alexander
Born at 1925/08/11, Newfoundland, Canada

Born August 11 1925, in Bonavista, NL, Calvin Alexander Reader passed away peacefully January 4, 2010 after a 5 month battle with cancer. Loving husband and true happiness of Astrida Reader (nee Berzinsh). Alex met Astrida in 1948 when Astrida with her parents arrived having been displaced from their homeland Latvia in WW2. When Alex first saw Astrida he said to his long time friend, I will marry that girl and so he did. Married in Corner Brook, NL in 1952 they shared 57 years together raising their family.
Alex was the son of Harold James Reader and Edna Louise Reader. H.J. Reader was a successful community leader and businessman/dry goods wholesaler and hardware merchant in NL. Dad spent many times with his grandmother Reader in Bonavista and always remembered her with reverence and love.
Alex leaves his loving and devoted children, James Alexander (Susan Balkwill), of Calgary, AB, Edward Julius (Manon Bibeau), of Morin Heights, PQ, Ted George Reader (Pamela Jacobson), of Toronto, ON. Adored Grandchildren are Matthew, Jessica, the late Claire (1982), Lisa, David, Joel, Hanna, Layla, Jordan. Dear brother to Ruby McKay (Halifax and North Bay), the late Corlis Kishinsky (Dec. 2009, Windham Center/Simcoe ON), Ted Reader (Corner Brook, NL) and Marilyn Broughton (Brooklin, ON) and lifelong friend of the Reader family of Corner Brook NL, Maimie Power/Smallwood of Bonivista NL (deceased 2007, St. John's).
Dad was serene, rich in humanity, full of grace and the joy of living. He lived a highly principled life, with integrity and consideration for others at all times. He valued the character of man, more than intelligence. Among his many joys were woodworking, painting, art collecting but Dad loved fishing beyond measure. Many of his favourite times were spent on the rivers of 'The Rock' pursuing Atlantic salmon. Nothing compared to this passion and we recall him as a 75 year old scrambling up and down the hills of the Gaspe in pursuit of his quarry and again at 80 on his beloved Humber River in Western Newfoundland. In this regard Dad contributed to the well-being of salmon rivers and their environment and was interested in anything that improved their well being. Dad made fishing trips with his sons to share this passion.
Alex served in the Canadian Army Training Core from 1942-1945 and after the war completed his education by graduating with his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (1950) from Mount Alison University, Sackville NB. Alex worked in the paper industry his whole life. Commencing with Bowater's in Corner Brook and eventually moving to Ontario with Hynde and Dauch (division of Domtar) in 1952. 1964 received promotion to head up Domtar's Prescott operations and in 1968 Alex was promoted to the paperboard Toronto division of Domtar. In 1969 Dad switched gears to head up Brodart as managing Director, a bookbinding company in Brantford. When Brodart moved operations in 1970, Dad started working for himself and founded 2 businesses, advertising (TV Facts Brant/Norfolk) and a distributor of educational materials for learning institutions and individuals (Reader Publications). Later Dad worked as a representative and consultant for many paper businesses in Southern Ontario right until the age of 80.
Founding member of Rotary of Georgetown, Dad served for many years as an elder for United Church in Georgetown and St. Paul's, Paris and other community boards and associations. The family would like to thank the community, St. Paul's United Church and the many medical professionals who cared for Dad both in Hamilton and Brantford but especially the Palliative Care Unit, BGH, Brantford. Cremation has taken place. There will be reception for friends of the Reader family in Paris, Ontario in Dad's honour on February 5, 2010 at Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, 184 Grand River St. N. Paris, ON. from 4-7 PM. No flowers please. Donations in Dad's honour may be made to the Atlantic Salmon Federation, Annual Conservation Fund or St. Paul's United Church. Online condolences or donations may be arranged through www.wmkippfuneralhome.com or by contacting Wm. KIPP 519-442-3061.
