TRIBUTE
BUSINESSMAN MORRIS GORDON
By Bernie Spector
Morris Gordon, the man who was my
father-in-law for 42 years, in reality treated and made me feel like a
son. I was called the alder adim or his number 1 "adim", but in reality
he treated and thought of all his sons-in-law and daughters-in-law in
the same way, with love, respect and affection, and I in turn thought of
him as a father and not as a father-in-law.
Morris Gordon was born in the small village of Krevetz in Poland. His
father died when he was a child, and when his mother remarried they
moved to Skaudville, Lithuania. It was here that he worked with his
stepfather whom he always said was a good man, but his mother had
dreams for him, and encouraged him to move to Canada, in particular
Newfoundland, where she had cousins.
He came to Canada in 1930, starting his work as a peddler where he
visited all the outports of Newfoundland, and throughout his lifetime
always spoke of how wonderful and trusting the Newfoundland people
were. They shared what little they had with him on his travels and he
never forgot their kindness and generosity. They shopped in his store,
and when they did not have the money to pay, he extended them credit,
trusting them, helping them, and they always paid him in full.
In 1936, he realized his need for a partner in life. He then began his
pleading and planning for Loretta to come to Canada to join him. She
arrived in St. John's in mid-winter and while he stood on shore looking
out to sea, Loretta was on the boat stuck in the ice where she kept him
waiting for two days till the boat was able to land. They were married
in March 1937, and from that day forward for the rest of his life, he
acted, thought and verbalized his feelings for her with the greatest of
love and respect as he did from the day they were married. She was the
Number 1 person in his life until the end. Together they struggled
against high odds, with a language that was new and a life very
different from that in Lithuania.
When he won a raffle that gave him a car he sold the car for $850 and
with this money rented a store in Corner Brook, and from then on
continued his hard work to build his business for himself and for the
family which followed, starting with Ida, and then Dorothy, Sylvia and
Donny.
Contact was lost with the families in Russia when the war began and
when
the war ended, he learned that his mother, stepfather, a brother, and a
baby sister along with Loretta's father, brothers and a sister had been
murdered by the Nazis. He began sending parcels to those left so that
they could live the best life possible. He received orders from them as
to what to send so that they had no difficulty selling his goods. He
received orders for coats, suits, sweaters, in sizes and colours needed
and these he bought and I remember going with him to ABC Parcels
through
whom he sent the parcels to Lithuania. With the proceeds of these
parcels, they were able to live a better life.
He continued helping his and Loretta's family, and was able to bring
first, Loretta's mother and younger sister with her family to Israel,
and later Loretta's other sister with her family also to Israel. He
helped bring one of his sisters to Israel and the other to Chicago with
their families. His helping did not stop there. He brought cousins
from New York to Newfoundland, set them up in businesses as he did
with
others from his shtetl, helping them all get established. He was able
to bring his cousin Mike Silver to Newfoundland from Russia to start a
new life.
The American government later asked him to build a project of
homes for the American Air Base in Stephenville, and with his cousin
Mike Silver, they built these homes for the American officers. They are
still there today and occupied by Newfoundlanders. I have walked those
streets and many people still ask how Morris Gordon is doing.
His
generosity continued and he was always there very quietly for those in
need. He always said his name was worth more than silver and gold, and
it was with the greatest respect that I heard the Newfoundlanders call
him Skipper when I visited Corner Brook with him many years ago. The
joy he had in showing me around Newfoundland was reflected in all he
said, from the twinkle in his eye to the smile on his face, and he
always said his best years were spent there, amongst the people who
accepted him and gave him a start in life.
He took great pleasure in all that his children and grandchildren
accomplished. His happiest moments were spent with all his
grandchildren around him at the Deder or Yon Tov table. His
great-grandchildren were the jewels in his crown, for to us he was a
king. He liked nothing better than to be with them whether it was at
Snowdon Del or just visiting.
When he took ill several years ago and the doctors were very negative
about operating, it was his children who pushed and due to their love
for him, spending the entire day at the hospital making sure he was
aware they were there, not letting him give up, and continually telling
him of their love for him, that he came through and continued to live a happy comfortable life. He wasn't ready to give up and we weren't going
to let him give up.
This time though it was different, and try as hard
as we could, we could not keep him with us any longer. A stronger voice
called him home.
Now the time has come after a full and good life to bid farewell.
Dad,
we will miss you and we will always remember with love and affection all
the good times we had together. Rest in peace. Shalom Dad.
